Fishing access: Multiple stocked ponds provide fishing opportunities throughout the region. "There is an area for day use where you can rent a paddle boat or kayak to go out on the water. Highly recommended if you like hiking," explains J G. about Bear Spring Mountain — DEC.
Water recreation: Paddling options range from small ponds to larger lakes with rentals. "We had SUPs and kayaks to take on the lake and our sites were right next to the boat launch. Each day we would paddle over to the swimming area on the lake," shares Shannon C. about lake activities.

What you should know
Limited facilities at primitive sites: Some forest camping areas lack standard amenities. "Only giving 4 stars because the best free sites have water pumps and vault toilets, but this is a great camping experience," reports Cameron about Charles E. Baker State Forest.
Horse-related considerations: Camping near equestrian areas has specific characteristics. "There is horses so you will smell them. There is a lake, grills restrooms and showers. This is one of the more fancy campsites and is definitely worth it for only 18 dollars," explains kevin T.
Seasonal variations: Campground experiences differ significantly based on timing. "We camped here for a weekend, and probably one of my least favorite sites so far. Hiking trails are good, the lake is nice, but there is no privacy at the campsites; they're all very small and packed tight," shares David during what was likely a peak season visit.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Several campgrounds provide dedicated play areas. "My kids really loved having a pool to swim in, in addition to the lake," notes Emily Z. about Keen Lake Resort Campground.
Swimming options: Multiple water access points provide cooling off spots. "The swimming beach looked nice. They do have boat rental. Our site and the others we saw were nicely shaded," reports Amy V. about her camping experience.
Organized activities: Some campgrounds schedule regular children's programming. "They have activity coordinators that make sure there is something to do for all ages every hour of the day! The security is great and patrol to make sure quiet hours are quiet to be courtiers to other campers that want quiet time," shares Mike H.
Tips from RVers
Electric service reliability: Verify power availability and amperage before booking. "Two electric hookups would trip the 50 amp circuit breaker on any load about 30 amps, which means the hookups are old and unmaintained," warns David about electrical issues at one campground.
Site dimensions: Check site length and width specifications carefully. "We were able to scope out others that we would prefer for our next visit. We didn't have a view of the lake, instead we were in someone's back yard lol. It wasn't a big deal. The site was well maintained and flat which were the most important," explains Emily Z. about Keen Lake Resort Campground.
Seasonal site availability: Equestrian campgrounds near Windsor have varying booking patterns. "We had a great time despite cold wet weather. Our site was probably one of the worst in the place but we were able to scope out others that we would prefer for our next visit," shares Emily Z. about her experience during shoulder season.
