Limited equestrian facilities exist for horse camping near Roosevelt, New York. Located in western Long Island, this area offers few dedicated horse-friendly campgrounds within a 45-mile radius. Campers seeking accommodations for horses often need to venture to nearby counties or neighboring states for proper equestrian facilities with corrals or paddocks.
What to do
Visit historic sites: Liberty Harbor RV Park serves as a convenient base for exploring iconic landmarks. "This is a prime location for visiting the city or heading down the shore. The light rail is a block away, and the path train is about 8," notes Joe R. at Liberty Harbor RV Park.
Access ferry transportation: Campers can easily reach Manhattan via nearby water transportation. "There is a ferry 100-yards away that takes you to Wall Street M-F. There is a great market about 1/4 of a mile away, and the path that can take you to WTC or 33rd Street area is only a mile away," explains Shawn B.
Explore local trails: The region offers various trail systems suitable for day hiking. "The campground was not my first choice. I would rather be in more secluded mountainous campsites. The upside to being so close to the parkway is that there are convenience stores nearby if you forget something," reports Dwight D.
What campers like
Urban accessibility: The proximity to New York City attracts many visitors seeking both outdoor accommodations and metropolitan experiences. "This is all about location. The closest RV park to NYC. Pick one of the larger end row sites to get a little extra elbow room," advises Keith and Tia S. at Allaire State Park.
Transportation options: Multiple public transit connections make city exploration convenient. "Very convenient location. My wife visited Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The sites had electric and water and were in a fenced off section of the marina parking area," shares Kevin A.
Diverse recreation: While horse facilities are limited, other outdoor activities are available. "Great camp ground and State Park. Very clean with professional staff. Lots to do in the area! Mountain Biking from easy, paved trails to several miles of single track with everything in between," explains Beau B.
What you should know
Site spacing: Campgrounds in this region typically feature closely situated sites with minimal privacy. "Sites are a little too close together. Noisy with highway traffic. Well maintained though. Ticks galore," cautions Justin S.
Urban camping environment: Most nearby options function more as parking areas than traditional campgrounds. "Basically a parking lot, but the location can't be beat. 2 ferries that run to Manhattan. Path train is a 12 minute walk away that will take you to Manhattan," states Karen S. at Liberty Harbor RV Park.
Seasonal considerations: Some facilities close for renovations during certain periods. "This may be my favorite spot. I have stayed in all the spots they offer, yurt, cabin and the pull up sites. Getting a cabin in the winter and going for a snowy hike is wonderful there," recommends Patrick M.
Tips for camping with families
Check bathroom facilities: Restroom conditions vary significantly across locations. "Clean bathrooms. Sites are a little too close together. Noisy with highway traffic. Well maintained though," notes Justin S.
Consider cabins for comfort: Alternative accommodations provide better options for families with children. "I've stayed in the cabins here a couple times. Cabins are no frills yet very nice no electricity they are equipped with 4 bunks a large picnic table and a wood stove for heat. Also a nice porch fire ring and a charcoal grill," describes Erik M.
Plan for noise: Urban-adjacent camping includes significant ambient sounds. "It was a little loud with city noises, but exactly what we expected being so close. Staff was great. Easy access with our 32 foot RV pulling our Jeep," mentions Kevin A.
Tips from RVers
Prepare for tight quarters: RV sites typically offer minimal spacing between units. "If it's packed, your neighbor will be within inches of your rig. Pluses, minutes walk to the Statue of Liberty, Liberty Science Center," warns Keith and Tia S.
Scout dump station availability: Not all facilities offer convenient waste disposal. "There is a dump station, but not the easiest to use. The laundry was not working properly and ate a good $5 of our quarters," cautions Shawn B.
Consider alternative routes: Navigation can be challenging in congested areas. "Getting in and out of the city is an adventure. Stay right off the highway to avoid the $30 tunnel toll. Follow RV life pro and not Waze," advises Joe R.
