Best Dispersed Camping near Ramah, NM
Several dispersed camping areas exist near Ramah, New Mexico, primarily along Six Mile Canyon Road and in the Turkey Springs area. Six Mile Canyon offers free dispersed sites approximately 2-3 miles up a dirt road off I-40. The road conditions are challenging—multiple reviews warn against attempting access after rainfall as the sandy/dirt crossing becomes muddy and impassable without 4WD. The canyon features pull-off spots with views of green canyon bluffs and rolling hills with good tree coverage.
Turkey Springs provides numerous dispersed sites along Forest Road 162 among Ponderosa pines, white cedar, and oak. The main road is in good condition until it starts ascending, where it becomes more rutted. The area sits above 7,000 feet elevation, making it cooler than surrounding areas, particularly at night. Both camping areas have seasonal closures from December 15 through March 31. According to one visitor, "Lots of options for sites on both sides of 162 before it starts going uphill. Several sites off the smaller two-track roads can support good size trailers with lots of flat open space." Cell service is variable but generally available in both locations, with Turkey Springs offering mixed LTE and 5G coverage on T-Mobile.
