Windy but gorgeous

My rooftop tent couldn't withstand the wind so I had to relocate but if you have a set up that can handle very very intense wind, i highly reccomend this spot. I took the other entrance (one that has signs leading to the crater) and there was 2 sites directly on the edge of the crater.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I access the Nevada Crater campground?

Lunar Crater Camp can be accessed via two entrance points. The recommended entrance has clear signage directing visitors to the crater. This entrance leads to camping spots positioned directly on the edge of the crater, offering dramatic views. The access roads may be unpaved, so vehicles with decent clearance are advised. As with many remote sites, it's wise to have detailed directions before setting out, as GPS coverage can be unreliable in this area.

What geological features can be seen at Nevada Crater?

The main attraction is the impressive lunar-like crater formation, which provides visitors with an otherworldly landscape reminiscent of the moon's surface. The crater's dramatic rim offers panoramic views of this unique geological formation. The site is part of the larger volcanic field in the area, showcasing Nevada's diverse geological history. The stark desert landscape surrounding the crater adds to the remote, primeval atmosphere that makes this location so distinctive.

Is camping permitted at Nevada Crater, and are there any fees?

Camping is permitted at Lunar Crater Camp. There are at least two established camping sites located directly on the edge of the crater, offering dramatic views. Currently, no information indicates fees are required for camping at this location, suggesting it may be free dispersed camping on public land. As with many remote camping areas, facilities are likely minimal or non-existent. Contact the Bureau of Land Management for the most current information regarding any permits or regulations before your visit.

What is the best time of year to visit Nevada Crater?

Spring and fall are likely the best seasons to visit Lunar Crater Camp when temperatures in the Nevada desert are more moderate. The area experiences extremely high winds at times, which can make camping challenging, especially for rooftop tents or less sturdy setups. Summer visits may face intense desert heat, while winter could bring cold temperatures and potentially difficult road conditions. Regardless of season, come prepared for wind exposure and bring camping equipment that can withstand substantial gusts.
