      Great pizza.

Very friendly and helpful staff. The bathrooms & laundry room are clean,a little outdated. The pull through sites seem to be all gravel/stone. Our back in site had a patio, fire pit and nice patio furniture. Looked like a lot to do for the kids. The camp store is well stocked with RV supplies and parts. After driving all day, then doing laundry it was nice to get a pizza and relax.

      The Premium Sites are FANTASTIC

We stayed here overnight on our way out west, so we didn't have big expectations. We are fairly new to pulling a 5th wheel, so we wanted an easy pull-through site plus we wanted it to be paved. Well there are 2 premium sites - we stayed in site# 89. It was HEAVEN! Not only was it paved, but also had a huge patio with a table and Adirondack chairs, and a fire pit with additional seating. The site was situated such that our "good side" was facing the trees, away from the rest of the campground. We have a 43' 5th Wheel plus our truck, and there was plenty of space. That is the best setup we've had so far. We didn't have time to use any of the amenities, and are not traveling with kids, so I can't speak for how good it was in that regard.

      Winter Getaway

We stayed in the recently renovated Owen #4. The renovations really updated it and they need to update the pictures they have on the web, with what it looks like now. New appliances, new furniture, fixtures, new bunk beds, etc. The cabin was very clean and organized upon arrival. They supply most everything thing you need i.e. dishes, cookware, etc. The one thing it does need is a corkscrew! We forgot ours and went without the wine we brought for dinner. With that bombshell though, it was beyond worth the getaway. The winter hiking was fantastic and it was quiet except for the wildlife, but that is why we went out there!

Nice stop on our way to Kansas

We needed an overnight stop on our way to Kansas and this KOA was perfect. We pulled in just after dark and there was a note on the door stating staff was limited due to Covid. We pulled into a very large pull through on the west side of the campground (site 16). The KOA was pretty full but everyone was respectful and we didn’t hear much noise. We had full hookups & the site we were in was spacious with a picnic table and fire ring with grate. It had rained quite a bit before we arrived so we didn’t sit outside, due to mud close by our site, but we had a nice view. The next morning, we paid at the office before we left & the Manager only charged us half price (we intended to pay the full price) because he felt bad for not being able to be on site when we arrived (the schedule on the KOA app said staffed until 7pm & we were there just after 6pm).

      BLUE COLLAR WORKERS BEWARE

•Turned of my water off in the winter time while it was in the negatives outside which froze my water and busted my water heater.

•quiet time is after 9 but we’re trying to make guests leave before 6

•their water line busted and they refused to reimburse multiple people for the 5 days we all went without water

•You can’t sit your trash out AT ALL, not even in the bed of your truck cause the dozens of stray cats will rip it apart and scatter it everywhere. They will also tear up your camper underneath looking for warmth

•owner saw me taking the trash out one day and offered to take it then turned around and told me I was to lazy to take it

•had 2 friends and their 3 kids come join us for a cookout and the owners pulled up in their golf cart, freaking out about how loud our “party” was and that the our new neighbors complained. Went to go apologize the next day and the neighbors said they didn’t even hear us.

•kept trying to up charge me on rent and electricity, one month my electric was $53 and the next month it was over $300 (the same month I wasn’t even there for 2 weeks)

•multiple blue collar workers left because the owners were treating them the same way

•they have a nice pool. If you want to invite anybody make sure you got extra money cause they’ll charge you whatever they feel like charging you that day. Went from $3 a person to $5 a person in just 2 days

•claim they’re Christians but refuse to you help in any way and will try to get as much money from you as they can

•••••••CHECK YOUR METER••••••••• when I left they tried saying my electric bill was higher than my deposit of $300 but when I told them I took a picture of the meter and how their price didn’t match the amount of kilowatts I had used (15 cents per kw) they sent me my deposit back

All this coming from someone who stayed here for 6 months and finally had enough

Busy and crowded, but good amenities and proximity to Omaha

We selected this campground as a base for a family get-together near Omaha, for 4 days/3 nights (Fri-Mon). For that mission, it worked well, but overall we were not super impressed for the price. This was our first KOA experience so maybe the thing we noticed were "normal" but there were some definite cons when compared to other campgrounds we've stayed at this year.

      1. Very busy & packed... we noticed a lot of traffic seemed to be just a quick stop over for the night, so lots of rigs coming in the afternoon/evening and leaving the next morning. There is just enough room to park our average-sized trailer and truck, and have a picnic table next to it, but neighbors are very close. This is not what I would consider a campground for settling in and relaxing as a destination unto itself.

      2. Some "deferred maintenance" was noticeable. The mini-golf course was in terrible shape. The playground equipment (swings, slides etc.) could use an update for sure. The road getting into the grounds has terrible potholes.

      3. They seem to be very particular about some odd things, like not allowing rugs on the grass (which is definitely not premium grass!). Have to pay extra for a site with a fire ring, or even enough space for one, and the base price is already on the high side.

      ...BUT... it's not all bad!

      1. Lots of good amenities, including picnic shelter(s?); community room with tables & games for larger gatherings; the pool seemed in good shape (though on the small side), big jumping pillow was a hit with the kids.

      2. On-site shop with a good selection of basic items for you and your rig. Free coffee in the morning, pizza available for delivery (we didn't try it but heard it was good). Friendly and helpful staff overall.

      3. The Kabins are really nice! A part of our group had rented one and it was a great base for gathering for meals, and had a decent firepit area. If we didn't own a camper, we'd consider this KOA just for the Kabins.

      4. Close to Omaha - great as a jump-off point for family activities, shopping, etc.

In Summary: If you don't mind paying more for a campground which has plenty of amenities and is best suited for a quick stop, or, if you are looking to rent a cabin and would like to be located conveniently in the Omaha area, this is a good option, but is a bit overpriced when considering other campgrounds which have more generous spacing and a more laid-back and relaxing environment.

      Lake Wanahoo State Recreation Area

      Awful experience

This is by far the worst place to go camping. First off the restrooms have no running water or soap to wash your hands. Only hand sanitizer hung on the wall. No swimming beach for kids. The worker they had was on his high horse for sure gave a lecture and repeated his self. Complained about how we parked said could not back in. I have never had this experience anywhere else. He was so rude would never return. Worst experience we had in long time.  Don't go nothing to do for family. Branch oak lake way more fun. And they have showers and running water and soap. Oh they did have a shower house but closed but that is only for campers. Not sure what I'm there. So maybe they have soap but for day visits no running water or soap. They do have pump water. What turned us off the most was the rude kid young adult working very rude like he on a power trip. Very disappointed.

    Guide to Fort Calhoun

Glamping options near Fort Calhoun, Nebraska extend beyond the immediate area, with multiple locations available within an hour's drive. The region sits along the Missouri River valley with elevations ranging from 970 to 1,300 feet, creating varied camping terrain. Winter temperatures can drop below freezing, making heated glamping structures particularly valuable during off-season visits.

    What to do

Archery practice: At Hitchcock County Nature Center, visitors have access to an on-site archery range. "As a family we go to Hitchcock a few times a year for the hiking and the archery range they have on-site. Both are excellent and a nice escape from the city!" notes Pat V., who regularly visits the area.

Hawk watching: The Loess Hills formation provides excellent bird watching opportunities, particularly for raptors. "Great hiking in Loess Hills, great Nature Center especially with programming of 'Hawk Watch'," explains James M. about Hitchcock County Nature Center's specialized wildlife viewing programs.

Paddleboarding: Lake Cunningham Campground offers equipment rentals for water activities. "Lake Cunningham is a fun destination for getting outside if you only have an afternoon to escape! The lake itself is great for kayaking, paddle boarding, and sailing! If you want to adventure but don't have your own gear there is a cute little paddle board shop that rents boards and kayaks by the hour," shares Kwin K.

    What campers like

Electric hookups with lake views: Lake Wanahoo State Recreation Area provides multiple site options with water views. "Sites are large and spaced out. I prefer the ones along the water but you have to book early to get one," advises A H., who recommends planning ahead for premium locations.

Tent camping on tiered sites: Lake Wanahoo offers elevated tent camping areas with strategic lake views. "The tent camping area is huge and there always seems to be plenty of availability. We were the only tent in the entire area. The tiered tent area allows you to have a great view of the lake from wherever you setup," explains Pat V.

Concrete pads at renovated sites: Lake Cunningham Campground recently updated their facilities. "Love the new East lots. Full access with concrete pad. Tons of room between spots. Mini store on the property to buy ice, firewood, and food from," shares Connor S. about the improved camping infrastructure.

    What you should know

Self-service check-in: Some campgrounds offer simplified arrival processes for late arrivals. "Stopped late after a long 12 hour drive. I loved the simple self service process. We picked an open spot, paid, and parked. The facilities were impressively clean and well maintained," reports Abby W. about her experience at Hitchcock County Nature Center.

Seasonal availability: Weather conditions affect campground operations from October through April. "This lake is one of the very few in Omaha that offers camping. And definitely of all types rv, and tent. But let me give you a disclaimer of why this is a 3 star. First the park is closed due to them draining it because of zebra mussels," explains Tony B. about potential closure issues.

Tree cover limitations: Newer recreation areas lack mature shade trees. "Lake Wanahoo is a fairly new lake in Saunders county Nebraska. Unfortunately when the lake and campground were built they planted saplings, so during the hot months there is no shade to be found," notes Pat V.

    Tips for camping with families

Educational programs: Lewis and Clark State Park Campground offers historical exhibits about the explorers' journey. "They have a great visitor center with amazing displays and exhibits that mark the history of Lewis and Clark and their travels around the area," shares Timothy S.

Playground access: Multiple campgrounds feature play areas near campsites. "There's a pretty big playground near all the sites. When I went in the first weekend of October they had a little trick or treat night too!" explains Morgan K. about Lewis and Clark State Park's family-friendly amenities.

Nature center programs: Hitchcock County Nature Center runs specialized educational activities. "This is one of our favorite places to camp. It's beautiful and there's plenty of hiking. With the nature Center there is plenty for the kids to do. There's even a 1 mile hike on a boardwalk that's very easy. There's all levels of hikes. We love doing their extra classes," notes Karen W.

    Tips from RVers

Dump station locations: At Lake Wanahoo, plan for dump station logistics. "When pulling your RV out here the water fill is in an awkward spot in a parking lot of the campground. To get to the dump station you have to leave the campground, get on the highway and drive to the opposite side of the lake to the day use area," advises Pat V.

Budget-friendly options: Tekamah Memorial Park provides economical camping within reach of Fort Calhoun. "Nice, quiet small town country sites. Close to town and stores. $15. Night in 2025. Fair. Good place for quiet, inexpensive nights. Quite a good deal," shares John G. about this affordable option.

Full hookup availability: West Omaha / NE Lincoln KOA Holiday provides complete RV services. "We stayed for only a night while passing though. The campgrounds were very clean, sites well maintained bathroom and showers were clean as well," explains Eileen H. about the well-maintained facilities.
