    Billings KOA Holiday

    All around great experience

Friendly staff, clean, well maintained grounds, quiet and charming. This place had everything we needed for a few nights of work, rest and play. And to top it off the internet worked great. They have a pool, mini golf, kids play grounds, and an enclosed dog park. The laundry and bathrooms were exceptionally clean and updated. We splurged a little got the deluxe pull through with the swing, patio and fire pit, and saved a little with our AAA membership. And, after having gone through death valley and the High Sierra Valley having the lovely tree coverage was awesome. This camp ground is tucked into a residential area, and far enough off the interstate to not hear the noise, but close enough to town and all the other amenities to make it very convenient. It’s also on the river, but we didn’t have a chance to take advantage of that on this trip. I only gave four stars because we were positioned right behind the maintenance residence and there was a lot of noisy activity coming and going at all hours. I’m not complaining, they did an excellent job of maintaining and I’m sure if we were in any other location on site we’d not been bothered by this at all. We’d definitely stay here again.

    Grandview Campground

    All that you need!

Quick one night stay here. The water pressure is MEH, the full hookups are nice, showers and bathrooms are decent but bring your shower sandals! Everyone is packed in tight, I’d have trouble staying here longer than a couple nights, also it’s pretty pricey!! Great location to Little Bighorn National Monument and Native / Custer history. They’ve got 9 pull through sites so big rig friendly!

    7th Ranch RV Park

    What a Find!

Can’t say enough about this park! The couple who run it are incredibly nice. Check in was a breeze and they give you tokens for free ice cream at registration. We were quickly escorted to our site. Sites are pull through and we did require a little bit of leveling. All hook-ups worked great.

Most sites have a patch of lush green grass and a tree for shade as well as a picnic table.

The laundry room has 3 sets of washers/dryers and if I remember correctly, it was $2.25 per machine. There was also a vending machine for detergent.

The bathrooms and showers were the largest we’ve seen and spotless.

A HUGE bonus was the additional 600 (?) acres to explore. Dogs are allowed off leash once through the gate and up the hill. The views are amazing from up there and it was the perfect spot to let the dogs run while we enjoyed the sunset.

The park was wonderfully quiet both day and night. There is a small play area and some horse shoe pits available.

Another added bonus was the freezer stocked with homemade pies! We picked up an apple pie to share with our friends on our next stop in Wyoming.

    Billings KOA Holiday

    Nice place for families

This is your typical KOA Holiday which is their way of branding a location as one to stay and have fun. They have a pool, hot tub, nice miniature golf course and access to the Yellowstone River. Sites are typical, full hookups with different grades of amenities and prices to go with them. We did not use the bathrooms but they looked nice. Nicely stocked store, friendly staff. Surprisingly our pull through was out of level side to side by three inches. Shouldn’t have to get our boosters out in such a place and for the price. Dinged them a star for that. Sites are tight at pull through a, do not expect privacy. But this is a nice place to hang out and relax, and if you have kids they can have some fun. Laundry room was nice and clean but half of the dryers were out of service.

    Captain Clark

    Montana Conservation License Required!

A Montana State Parks Conservation Permit is now required to camp here. Don't know if they enforce that requirement. Here's the link. Your permit is good all year.

    https://ols.fwp.mt.gov/landing_input

This is a great spot. I was here on a week night very quiet. Only one other couple. Lots of birds. You can see where the beavers have been at work felling trees on they way in. Wild turkeys were pretty vocal last evening.

Easy to imagine Capt. William Clark floating past in 1806 in his lashed together canoes on his way to the Missouri to rejoin Capt. Merriweather Lewis.

It is actually a fishing access point with boat ramp. A little slow going in on the dirt road. Could be slick if rainy. There are 4 campsites with fire rings and a pit toilet at the far end.

Length limit on vehicles is 20 feet. They clarify 20 ft tow vehicle and 20 ft trailer. Don't know how strict they are on this. It would be tough to get anything big in here anyway. You can stay here up to 7 days.

    Billings KOA Holiday

    Resort style...

Never have we stayed at a KOA before so this stay was different than anything we’ve experienced before. The pull through site we had included a patio with swing and picnic table- but not much on space... probably only 15 feet between rigs(?) however the campground had plenty of activities and amenities, including mini golf, pool, lodge, dog park, playground, ice cream stand and a BBQ joint, and the mini golf, and food stuffs were all an additional fee. We were only staying one night, and didn’t partake in any of the activities, and at the price of the per night rate, I felt that maybe we wouldn’t stay at another KOA, mostly because of the spacing issue, and the fact that it didn’t really feel like a campground at all... but like I said, we are used to slightly more rustic conditions, lol. It is worth mentioning that just a few miles away is Pictograph State Park- and that was pretty cool, and a beautiful walk after a day of driving!

    Beautiful stop over

Nice small park close to i-90 interstate with lengthy pull through sites and full hookups. Clean updated bathrooms and beautiful scenery all around. Very close to Custer State Park. About half the sites have a tree wi th shade available. Our site does not have shade. Pads are all gravel and leveling maybe needed.

    Billings KOA Holiday

Not our typical campground but 5 stars nonetheless!

General: Upon arriving at this campground (the FIRST Holiday KOA), I felt like we were in Disneyland! Everything was spotlessly clean, the staff was exceptionally friendly and even though there were rain clouds in the sky, it felt sunny!

Site Quality/Facilities: There are a variety of sites ranging from tent to full hookup with concrete patio, swing, and upgraded picnic table with umbrella. We had reserved a water/electric site. The first site assigned to us had a huge puddle from the recent rain so I went back to the office and asked if we could switch to the one next to it and it was no problem to do so. Sites that back up to the river are, in my opinion, the nicest but they don’t have full hookups if that is what you need. Some of the tent sites will hear road noise. There is a restaurant on-site (Pistol Pete’s) that was not open when we were there (due to Covid) but there was a food truck where you could order breakfast sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, etc. We did not try this so cannot comment on the quality. Coin-operated laundry.

Bathhouse: As nice as, if not nicer than, our bathroom at home! The tiled showers were very clean (it helped that I snagged one just after it was cleaned) and had a bench, plenty of hooks, a sink, and a toilet in an all-in-one. The water pressure was a little meek but hot. Husband had a shower in the alternative trailer– nice and clean but not as fancy.

Activities: Pool, hot tub, nice playground, mini golf all on-site. Campground backs up to the Yellowstone River with direct access, although the river was very low when we were there.

This very family-friendly campground is not our typical place to camp but after a week without, we needed showers and electricity and it was a Friday night in August, so we are glad we made the reservation to stay here!

Guide to Pompeys Pillar

Camping opportunities near Pompeys Pillar, Montana spread across the high plains terrain where elevations range from 2,500 to 3,500 feet. Summer temperatures typically reach 85-95°F during day and cool to 55-65°F at night. Cell reception varies significantly between campgrounds in this region, with stronger signals closer to Interstate 90 and diminished coverage in outlying areas.

What to do

Explore Little Bighorn Battlefield: 15-20 minute drive from 7th Ranch RV Park. "Custer actually rested his troops at this site just prior to starting the battle. Staff was very friendly and helpful," notes one camper who visited this historical site.

Fishing at Yellowstone River: Access available from Yellowstone River RV Park & Campground. "Pretty nature walk down to the river. We are newbies to RV life but overall we had no complaints," reports a visitor who took advantage of the river access trail.

Hiking on nearby sandstone formations: Many campgrounds provide access to local terrain. "There is also gritty sandstone climbing on the trims that surround Billings and one of our favorite ranges in the lower 48, the Beartooths, is very close by and absolutely stunning!" shared an enthusiastic outdoor adventurer.

What campers like

Historical connections: The area offers rich cultural history. At 7th Ranch RV Park, campers appreciate the historical significance. "Very clean and well taken care of campsite close to the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Park. They have a neat little tradition of writing your name and date on flat little stones and leaving them up at the flag pole."

Evening social activities: Some campgrounds organize regular gatherings. One visitor at Grandview Campground mentioned, "The attendant was very friendly and showed us to the site and helped us back in. She said they have an ice-cream social every night in their game building."

Shade variations: Tree cover differs between parks. A reviewer at 7th Ranch noted, "About half the sites have a tree with shade available. Our site does not have shade. Pads are all gravel and leveling maybe needed."

What you should know

Variable water quality: Water conditions vary by location. A camper at 7th Ranch reported, "We enjoyed this park however, our site was not level and the water had an unpleasent taste. It is off of the beaten path and you will need to travel a short distance on a gravel road that had some potholes."

Train noise considerations: Some rv parks near Pompeys Pillar, Montana experience railroad disruptions. A visitor noted bluntly, "Nice but not quiet. I can't wear ear plugs and the 'you hear them so often that you get used to them' excuse doesn't work."

Seasonal operations: Operating schedules vary widely. Hardin KOA runs from April through mid-October, while Yellowstone River RV Park remains open year-round. This affects availability during shoulder seasons.

Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and activities: Several campgrounds offer family-friendly features. "They have a small play ground. Kids had a great time. Highly recommend this site," noted a family who stayed at 7th Ranch.

Swimming options for hot days: Billings KOA Holiday provides welcome relief from summer heat. "There are lots of activities - from mini-golf to dog park to river access. We took advantage of the amazing showers," shared a visitor who appreciated the recreational amenities.

Pet-friendly considerations: Many campgrounds near Pompeys Pillar accommodate animals, but with restrictions. "Great host awesome neighboring campers, host's dogs without leashes + they are not friendly (bit my great Uncle) so watch out for the black and brown wiener dog looks like a small Rottweiler," cautioned one camper.

Tips from RVers

Dump station challenges: Some rv parks in the Pompeys Pillar area have unusual configurations. "My only issue was the dump hook up at our FHU site. It was about 1ft above ground level and almost made it impossible to dump with an accordion hose," shared a frustrated RVer.

Winter accessibility: Limited year-round rv parking exists in the region. A traveler at Yellowstone River RV Park & Campground noted, "Friendly folks. Nice scenery, especially at sunset. Full hook up year round, lots of full timers makes it a nice and quiet stay!"

Site spacing considerations: Campground density varies throughout the area. A visitor observed, "This park has very nice full hookups sites with trees and lawns, some tent only sites at the rear of the park, and several water & electric only sites that are very close together."
