Flat Lake Recreation Area features spacious campsites right on the water where pets are welcome, with several concrete picnic tables and fire rings available for campers. This free 14-day boondocking area accommodates both tent and RV camping, with drive-in access making it convenient for pet owners traveling with gear. Downstream Campground, operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers, provides 86 pet-friendly sites spread across four distinct loops (Lismas, New Deal, Wheeler, and Faranuf), each offering level, well-spaced sites with plenty of room for dogs to settle comfortably beside their owners. Vault toilets are available at both campgrounds, with Downstream also offering modern shower facilities. The campground grounds are consistently described as well-kept and clean, important for campers with pets navigating the area.

Paved recreation paths totaling approximately 4-5 miles circle Downstream Campground, providing excellent walking opportunities for dogs and their owners. Most sites are equipped with 30-amp electrical hookups, though pets must be leashed throughout the campground areas. Fort Peck Duck Creek provides an alternative pet-friendly option with waterfront camping and easy lake access for dogs who enjoy swimming, though campers report occasional issues with biting insects depending on the season. Wildlife sightings are abundant throughout the region, so keeping pets properly secured is essential. The area offers limited cell service at most campgrounds, with Flat Lake Recreation Area notably providing full Verizon coverage. During summer months, temperatures can reach above 100°F, making morning and evening the best times for pet activities, while limited shade at some sites requires planning for pet comfort.

      Downstream (MT)

Nice and Clean, But Barely any River or Lake Access Without a Boat

Very spacious campground. I was impressed with the sites - lots of mature trees, and they have a reasonably long (4ish mile) nature trail.

One thing I found disappointing was that there is very little river or lake access nearby without a boat. I could barely find any place to let my dog cool off in the lake. Even the nature trail never gets closer than about 50 yards to the river, and is separated from it by a swampy, mosquito infested, cattail laden barrier. They need to provide more beach access. The only swimming beach is a few miles up the road, and as you guessed, NO DOGS ALLOWED. That's a shame, because my dog is cleaner and better behaved than most people.

Be aware that this part of Montana is the Great Plains, and it gets very hot in the summer. Right now, July 24th we're supposed to have a high of 102. And my particular campsite has NO SHADE whatsoever.

This is a much better place to stay if you have a boat, as the lake is really the only attraction here. It's just too bad there is such limited access unless you have a boat.

The nearest town is Glasgow, some, 20ish miles away, and there ain't much there. Fort Peck is closer, about 4 miles, but there's nothing there but a little convenience store.

IMPORTANT: If you're coming in from the east or west on US 2, BE SURE YOU TAKE THE "TRUCK ROUTE" Highway 42 down to the lake, NOT the regular Highway 42, which has a VERY LOW CLEARANCE BRIDGE. I had to stop, and flag down a sheriff's deputy who graciously held traffic up so I could back out of my predicament. There's no warning sign. I made a right hand turn onto 42, and BOOM, there it was a block up the road. 12 feet, 2 inches. My 5th wheel is 13'6".

      **NOT FUN**

**IMPORTANT: Don't be tempted to park under the cottonwood trees. Your vehicle will be COVERED with some kind of sap...took two car washes to get it off.

West End Tent And Trailer Campground — Fort Peck Project

Another Beautiful Spot On the Shores of the Fort Peck Reservoir!

This is a similar spot to other areas located around the reservoir in that it is wide open giving you that fantastic Montana Big Sky feeling.  During the week there's hardly anyone up here so there's a good chance you won't have any neighbors.  Each site has a fire ring and picnic table.  There are also vault toilets nearby and a fish cleaning station!

West End Tent And Trailer Campground — Fort Peck Project

      Great spot on the lake!

There are several free campgrounds around the Fort Peck area. We stayed at West End which has three loops, toilets, fire rings and picnic tables. Dogs are welcome. Great views for sunrise/sunset here. It did get a little windy on the lake shore but other than that it was a nice quite spot. Several RVs there with boats if you can about that kind of noise.

      Downstream (MT)

Corps campground with large nicely spaced sites

Very nice campground below the Ft Peck dam with large campsites widely spaced. A mix of 30 and 50 amp electric with a shower building. Water taps are located in several locations within the campground to fill your tank. Dump station located outside campground. Well maintained area with numerous trails and access to a very challenging frisbee golf club course.

      Duck Creek

      Lots of elbow room

Lots of space between campsites. But, being central Montana, there are almost no trees or brush. So, there is no privacy.

There is another campsite half a mile west that is set down in a private hollow. No table but really nice if you can do without.

      Good light show... ??
Clear sky and full moon. Suddenly I saw the brightest meteor I have ever seen streak 3/4 way across sky. Brighter than the full moon. WOW! Do they do this light show every night or was this done just for me?

      Duck Creek

Big Sky Country at its Best!

This is one of the best places to take in that Big Sky that Montana is famous for!  The combination of the rolling hills that seem to go on forever and the reservoir make this a great spot to camp!  There are tons of opportunities to recreate in so many different ways!  At most of the grassy camping peninsulas you can launch your boat or SUP right into the water!  There are places where you can get some solitude and other places that are fit for a reunion or weekend party/getaway!

Now getting to the actual campsites.  Most of them are relatively primitive with only a few fire rings and picnic tables scattered about.  The grassy peninsulas are also not really split into individual campsites and it feels more like a camping field.  This means that if its busy your neighbors will likely be right on top of you if you can't get one of the isolated spots.  There are vault toilets near most of the spots along with running water at the day-use areas.  Another great thing about these spots is the presence of a great fish cleaning station!  To get cheap gas and food head into the nearby town of Glasgow which will be at least $1 cheaper per gallon than the marina pumps

      Fort Peck Duck Creek

Fantastic for Accessing the Lake and Checking out Fossils!

This was my 2nd favorite spot that we visited other than the place we stayed at for the wedding.  First reason it was so great was because of the seclusion due to it being on the south side of Lake Ft. Peck and away from any city.  Be warned though you are pretty much on your own out here so be sure you have a full tank of gas before exploring.  The 2nd and arguable more important reason I loved this spot so much was due to it being surrounded by the Hell Creek Geologic Formation which has some of the highest concentration of vertebrate fossils in the world!  While it is illegal to take any vertebrate fossils you can get cool imprints of leaves and other invertebrate animals that lived right alongside the dinosaurs!

West End Tent And Trailer Campground — Fort Peck Project

      Many large sites

We stayed in OF 8, which has no hookups. The site, as is many around it, is huge. This site is nearest road so keep that in mind. Traffic was relatively quiet when we were there during weekday. Many sites have view of water although some are just peekaboo. Shade in many sites but not the big OF sites. Sites with hookups have nice paved pad. A few of these are really deluxe being off on their own with great views. Campground is not walking distance from lake. Lake is impressively HUGE. Nice fire ring at each site. Most sites appear to not be super level. We did fine in 8.

    Guide to Nashua

Camping near Nashua, Montana offers seasonal temperatures that can reach above 100°F in summer months, making water access a valuable amenity. Most campgrounds sit within the Fort Peck Dam region, which contains the fifth largest artificial reservoir in the United States. Vault toilets are standard at many sites, though shower facilities vary by location.

    What to do

Bike the trail system: Downstream Campground features approximately 5 miles of mostly paved trails surrounding the campground. One camper noted, "Surrounding the camp are roughly five miles of mostly paved trails, perfect for early morning or late night walks" at Downstream Campground.

Stargazing: The rural Montana location provides exceptional night sky viewing at most campgrounds, though light pollution varies. A visitor at Duck Creek mentioned, "Clear sky and full moon. Suddenly I saw the brightest meteor I have ever seen streak 3/4 way across sky. Brighter than the full moon."

Water recreation: Many campgrounds offer direct water access for swimming, fishing, and boating. At Roundhouse Point Campground, one camper shared, "There are places to put in and paddle board. There are 12 official sites but SO much space!"

    What campers like

Spacious sites: Many campgrounds feature generous spacing between sites, unlike crowded alternatives. A camper at Fort Peck Marina observed, "The sites are long and just wide enough so you can park a boat."

Clean facilities: Maintained bathrooms and grounds are consistently mentioned in reviews. At West End Tent And Trailer Campground, a visitor appreciated that it was "Safe, clean, and quiet on our one-night stay mid-week."

Wildlife viewing: The area supports diverse animal populations. A reviewer at The Pines campground described it as "Rustic, quiet, peaceful, lots of game," making it good for nature observation.

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Some campgrounds require advance booking through specific channels. At Downstream Campground, one reviewer advised, "This is not a campground one can just show up at and get in. Being a Federal facility, it is, of course, a Federal process to 'check in'. One must, without exception, set up an account with the website recreation.gov."

Seasonal considerations: Summer temperatures regularly reach the 90s with limited shade at many sites. A camper at Downstream noted, "This campground is on the high prairie... it can be very windy, and storms come in fast. If mountains and lots of pine trees are what you are looking for, this isn't it."

Insects: Depending on season and location, biting insects can be problematic. At Duck Creek Campground, a visitor reported the campground gets "very busy on weekends with lots of local traffic."

    Tips for camping with families

Look for recreation facilities: Some campgrounds offer more than basic amenities. A visitor at Downstream Campground was impressed with the "park like seeing with playground, volleyball net, basketball court and horseshoe pits. They even lend out the equipment you need!"

Sandy beaches: For families with children, certain campgrounds offer beach access. A reviewer described The Pines as having "sandy beaches lining the camping areas. Great for animals and kids!"

Wheelchair accessibility: Families with mobility needs will find some campgrounds especially accommodating. As one visitor to Downstream Campground noted, "For those who are in a wheelchair, this campground is a real treat. There are miles of relatively flat, paved, walkways, including to fishing ponds. The showers and facilities are handicap accessible."

    Tips from RVers

Low bridge warning: When approaching from certain directions, be aware of height restrictions. One RVer heading to Flat Lake Recreation Area warned, "Our RV GPS and Waze wanted us to turn on 6th St in Glasgow, which has a 12' 2" bridge under the railroad tracks... We went two blocks further to 4th St. which is the truck route."

Hookup locations: Pay attention to utility placement when setting up. A camper at Fort Peck Marina reported, "The electric and water are at the back of the site, so we needed 25 feet of electric cord and water hose to reach the utilities."

Dump station access: Plan for waste management as many sites lack onsite dump facilities. A camper noted, "The sign as you enter the marina states the nearest dump station is 3.5 miles, which is at Downstream COE CG. The man at the bait shop stated there's a nice dump station in Glasgow at Scottie's Express Car Wash."
