      Superior, Montana

      Overview

Thompson Peak Lookout provides great views of the Clark Fork Valley, the town of Superior, the Idaho state line and, of course, the big sky of Montana. It is close enough to Superior to allow for easy access, but remote enough to provide the quiet and solitude expected at a lookout. The modernized tower provides amenities not typical to a lookout, making it a desirable place to stay.

      Recreation

A variety of trails exist in the area, allowing visitors a chance to explore the surrounding forest. Wildlife spotting is also a popular activity. Most of all, visitors come to the tower to relax and enjoy the scenery.

      Natural Features

The lookout is located on the third floor of a multiple story building that is used as a radio and cellular tower. Equipment is located on other floors of the building. It is constructed out of concrete blocks with an enclosed stairway, making it more suitable for children. The 2 million-acre Lolo National Forest includes four wilderness areas and a wide variety of trees, plants and wildlife. The area is home to mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, moose, deer and grizzly and black bears. Both the bald and golden eagle reside in the forest, along with trumpeter swan, herons and dozens of varieties of duck.

      De Borgia, Montana

      Overview

Savenac Bunkhouse provides sleeping accommodations for large groups staying at the Savenac Historic Tree Nursery in the Lolo National Forest of Montana. The area is filled with history and was once the site of the U.S. Forest Service's largest and most beautiful nurseries in the West. The bunkhouse can sleep up to 30 people and offers somewhat modern facilities, as well as access to a variety of recreational opportunities.

      Recreation

A variety of historic sites and memorials, as well as interpretive trails, exist near the bunkhouse. A self-guided tour of the nursery is also available, giving visitors some background on the history of the site. The world-class Route of the Hiawatha Trail is located just 7 miles to the west, offering pristine mountain biking. Numerous mountain streams and the St. Regis River are available for fishing, wading and non-motorized boating within just a few minutes of Savenac. The beautiful Savenac Creek runs through the compound. In the winter, trails in the nearby area are groomed for snowmobile use and opportunities abound for cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Lookout Pass ski hill is located just 10 miles west, on Interstate 90.

      Natural Features

The bunkhouse is one of three rental cabins located at the Historic Savenac Nursery. The nursery was founded in 1907 to grow trees for the Forest Service Nursery operations that concluded in 1969. The site is now open to the public for recreation. The bunkhouse was originally a garage and has been converted to sleeping quarters. The facilities are close to the Idaho border, in the Bitterroot Mountains of western Montana. The Lolo National Forest is home to many species of wildlife, including deer, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, mountain lions, moose and black bears.

      Nearby Attractions

The nursery is located near Haugan, with easy access to Interstate 90. It is within walking distance of a family restaurant, gas and general store and gift shop. The Savenac compound also consists of a visitor center that is operated from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

      We Gave Nugget a Try

We decided to stay here because we’ve seen this campground(CG) featured the last five year’s we’ve been on the road by CG review websites, travel forums, and big-name RV bloggers. So we thought we’d give Nugget a try. We followed our RV GPS to the CG that is near I-90, but far enough away that you don’t hear highway noise. There was another camper checking in when we arrived, but check-in was fairly quick and thorough. There was a sign about being a Good Sam Member and we had to ask to get the discount as that option was not available for the online reservation. We then had a very friendly escort to pull through site 63 with FHUs, which is supposedly a premium site. This gravel site has a little grass yard with a picnic table. The site is across from a community fire pit and couple of their little trail heads. When we were there in July, there was a fire ban so not having a site fire pit was no big deal. The utilities are nicely placed in the middle of the pad. Water pressure is good at about 50 psi. We got 2 to 3 bars on Verizon. As there are a lot of mature pine trees in this CG, satellite is iffy. Our campsite was at the north end of the CG facing the woods, so we used our Verizon MiFi versus Starlink. We probably could have gotten the Starlink to work if we put the antenna on our roof, but as we were only here for three nights, we didn’t try. There’s a nice trail system around the CG to walk with your kids and it is dog friendly. They offer a lot of amenities of which laundry was one that we did use. There’s a nice 9-hole golf course just down the road. They used to let veterans golf for free on Wednesdays, but now charges vets only$5. The CG also had a food truck one evening that was convenient. We wanted to see what all the hype was about and we got the chance. This CG has a lot to offer families or campers who desire a lot of comforts. Overall, its a nice and well run CG, but we are not compelled to repeat with all the other options in the area.

      Incredible lookout with amenities!

Just finished up my stay here after snagging a cancellation and I’m absolutely blown away. This was my first lookout tower experience, I was little skeptical about spending $80 post tax for this, but it was well worth it. Beautiful secluded tower with amazing views on almost every side of the tower. So many amenities, this is better than a lot of Air BnBs I’ve stayed at. Working fridge w freezer, coffee maker, microwave, two burner stove, heater, cooking utensils, pots/pans, working electricity and 4 bars of service. I usually go for more remote locations, but this was a wonderful break from sleeping outside in a tent for 8 days straight. Super comfy stay. The drive up was fine. Almost any car could drive up, just be careful with FWD when it gets muddy. As someone who visited solo I felt extremely safe. Padlock on the gate on the road, padlock on the front door, and a padlock on the door taking you up to the 3rd story. Absolutely awesome place for watching sunset, sunrise, and stargazing! I got the opportunity to watch a lightning storm in the middle of the night. trash is PACK IN PACK OUT! There is NO RUNNING WATER here. Pit toilet only. Well worth the money.

Clean, cozy, quiet and literally 5 minutes to town & 1/4 mile to boat launch. Went Morel mushroom hunting and had farm fresh eggs, Cabin had all the amenities the the firepit is crazy cool!

This place is a hidden treasure for sure.

      Rude and condescending

We didnt stay here as when we arrived at 9 pm, the office area and road to get to rv park were way to tight for our 40 ft fight wheel. When calling to let them know, no one answered the phone or returned our calls for two days. I finally was called back by a man that was so condescending and rude I could hardly believe he would talk to me like he did. I he pretty much called me a liar. My husband and I have been in 34 states in the last 2 years full time RV so we know to not get ourselves in a spot that we cant get out of. Lack of experience is not the case here.

Truck Broke Down, Won’t refund 1 night stay

We are in Washington supposed to meet family in Montana and stay one night here on the way. Our truck broke down and won’t be fixed for about 3 weeks at dealership. We were told we couldn’t have a refund because of late notice. I tried to call and work it out politely with a basic no. I understand you could have rented but you are the business taking risk. Do NOT punish future renters for something out of their hands. Bad business. I would understand a week or more booked but one night is petty. Also we called Wednesday to cancel and was told someone would call back, I was told we didn’t cancel 48 hours or more and that is longer than 48 hours.

      Nice proximity to trails

A really odd hillbilly-esque campground. Some of the sites were awkwardly laid out which seemed to confuse quite a few people. Full hookups were nice and so was the proximity to town and the trail system. There’s also a bowling alley and restaurant on site. Limberlost Brewing is a must stop.

      Perfect view

We loved our visit here. It is a ways out and you better bring every thing you need because there aren’t any stores close. They do have ice, on site. The camp hosts are wonderful and meet us when we arrived. The only thing that would’ve made it better if there was a little bit more space between the RVs, but it was still great. The view was amazing.

Great spot to find at the end of a long drive day. Just the kind of Rv spot for Montana. Trees & stars in big sky country. The layout was nice with lots of spots to choose from. The fall colors were great. The wifi was spotty from the far spot we got other then that perfect RV camp site. Also price was good.

What more could you ask for?

This campground is a Good Sams CG. I agree with the previous reviewer in that it does remind me of a KOA. There are different levels. Premium sites. Standard sites. W/E sites. There are cabins. I nice camp store. Laundry room. Nice clean restrooms with showers. And. Really nice owners.

The area is beautiful, set in the mountains. The Clark Fork River running nearby. Hiking. St Regis is nearby for provisions and they tour having the best huckleberry shakes in MT.

On a hill overlooking the river

There is a Motel, Casino, Lounge. Dining, Bowling AND an RV Park here. Unfortunately, due worker shortage. most were closed. But, a small herd of deer welcomed us at the entrance. That was cool.. The RV park is up the hill to the left of everything else. Once in the RV section, you don't see the other part. There are several seasonal sites, but also travelors. It is not a fancy place, but a nice place. The bathhouse was super clean. The sites were easy in and out. Most sites do have a view of the mountains. Full hookups. Close to Thompson Falls. There is a new brewery in town. Definitely check it out. If you play golf, there is hidden gem not far away. River Bend Gold Course. We played. It is really a pretty, well maintained course. There's a dam, public boat launch, a nice park and playground and a good grocery store. Hot Springs are about 30 min. away.

      Great family campground

Great place to stay if your in the St. Regis area. You don’t have to leave the campground if you don’t want to with tons of great activities. Bathrooms were good, showers could use some work but they were clean and had hot water. Tree sites 7 and 8 would be our preferred sites. Larger rigs look at B2. It’s shaded throughout the day. The hiking trails on site were fun and also the FS trails nearby are great as well. Only complaint is that the train echos pretty good through the canyon the town is in so noise was an issue at times throughout the night with the train horns.

      One night at Polson KOA

My husband I stayed at the Polson KOA (Polson, Mt) one night while we were there visiting a friend and his family. It's convenient if you don't want to spend too much money on a hotel room. The place looked really pretty and the Motorcoach resort attached to it was also pretty and looked very well maintained. You could even sleep in the back of your car (if you have room). We slept in the back of our 2015 Subaru Outback. They have well maintained showers and bathrooms that look like they get cleaned every day. You should wear bathroom slippers or flip flops or something to avoid potential plantar warts in case someone who had it showered there. There's a small gift shop, where you go to check in when you get there. It's kind of like getting a hotel room, except you sleep in your car/tent/camper and walk to the main building for bathrooms/showers. For food, you can drive to town in Polson.

      Family friendly, not really “camping”

If you’re looking for family friendly, this is your spot. Lots of kids activities. Free breakfast. Washrooms, showers and laundry facility available. Scenically, it’s not very pretty. Sites are very close together with little privacy. Our spot was so small we couldn’t fit our tent, picnic table and fire pit in it. We had to park somewhere else, and move the picnic table our. If you prefer exploring nature and quiet, this isn’t the park for you.

      Great Stay, Wonderful Managers.

Our family had a great one night stay. It was very last minute but they had a tent spot available. They do have around fifteen RV spots a few small cabins, and a handful of tent spots. The tent spots are around the perimeter of a gazebo that had electric hookup. They have four total restrooms, two of those have showers, and they have a laundry facility available as well. Everything was clean and we'll kept! Planning on staying again!
