Within Gallatin National Forest, this fire lookout tower operates as a unique overnight rental managed by the US Forest Service. Campers sleep inside the actual lookout structure, which features bunk beds and a wood-burning fireplace. The site accommodates up to four people and requires advance reservations.
Access varies by season and vehicle capability. During summer months, high-clearance vehicles can drive directly to the tower, while winter visitors face a challenging snowshoe trek. Harry H. notes it provides "a backcountry experience without all the work and with some creature comforts" when accessible by vehicle. Mountain bikers can reach the site via double-track trails, though the climb requires good fitness levels.
The tower provides 360-degree views from its elevated position. Multiple reviewers mention wildlife sightings in the surrounding area. Cell service is available, and the site allows alcohol. No pets are permitted, and RVs cannot access this location due to the terrain and structure type.
Campers should coordinate with forest service rangers before arrival and pack appropriately for the elevation and weather conditions. Firewood is available on-site for the wood stove. For additional camping options in the region, see camping near Gallatin National Forest.
