    Watkins Mill State Park Campground

    Peaceful

We stayed Sunday-Wednesday and it was very peaceful. Sites are not right on top of each other and it looks like they all have a fire pit and picnic table. There are only a handful of paved spots and you will need leveling blocks on the gravel. Showers and bathrooms are clean and the hosts are very nice. New asphalt roads throughout the park; nice for walking, biking, etc. Be sure to get biscuits & gravy at “The General Store” just down the road from the park entrance.

    Big Lake State Park Campground

    Clean and Friendly off I-29

My husband and I tent camped one night at this park. We arrived around 8 pm and even though the office was getting ready to close, the woman behind the counter was very kind and helpful. She helped us with finding our spot and with getting firewood. Our basic tent site was lakeside and had a fire pit and picnic table. The site was so well maintained it was hard to find small sticks for kindling.

The grounds have private bathrooms with toilets and showers. There are two nice playgrounds and a swimming pool. Most campers were enjoying fishing in the small lake. Kayaks were available to rent for a small fee. Kids enjoyed riding bikes around the flat roads.

This is a great spot off I-29 to set up camp and have a rest. It's also a good spot to take young kids fishing.

    Big Lake State Park Campground

    Small quiet park

Small park.sites are right next to each other. Picnic tables and fire pits are on site gravel. All roads are narrow one way with the dumpstation at the back end of park with trash dumpsters there. So on a sunday you will get stuck in the dumpstation line to drop off your trash even if you don't need to dump. Bathrooms are clean and well maintained. Sites are pretty level. Great playground area for the kids.

    Basswood Country RV Resort

A great place to take the kids/grandkids

We have been camping at Basswood for several years, first with our children and now with our grandchildren. Basswood provides amenities that are great for entertaining children, includinga swimming pool and splash park, two playgrounds, a basketball goal, and fishing. Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie. There is a great little store with alcohol for the adults; ice cream treats, which we enjoy after a swim; and nearly any key item you might have forgotten to pack. Most roads throughout the campground are paved, and the campground is generally well-maintained. We appreciate the full-service RV spots, but there are very nice bathroom facilities, including showers, in two locations in the park.

    Big Lake State Park Campground

    nice, basic campground

The state park is well maintained but doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles! Sites are flat, mostly pull through. Bathrooms and showers are nice and clean. Pool was closed for construction when we stayed, but looked nice. They have really nice little cabins for rent is camping isn’t your strong suit! Not much in the area to visit if fishing isn’t your thing though! There is a drive through nature preserve fairly close but we didn’t go do it. Kayak rental is available but if fishing isn’t your thing this might not be the park for you. Lots of flat roads for biking though!

    Tidy and well run park

This park is convient to I-29 but far enough off the highway to be quiet and peaceful. Tent sites, full hookups as well as rooms and cabins are available. As a point of interest, this used to be a favorite fishing spot of President Harry S. Truman, check out the Mother in Law cabin—built at his request.

    Watkins Mill State Park Campground

    Great Camping

Stayed here for three nights. All spots have plenty of shade when we walked around. Shower house and bathrooms were clean and nice. Lots of things to do such as boating, kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing and swimming. Fire pits were even nice with an attached grill grate.

Guide to Amazonia

Cabin camping near Amazonia, Missouri provides options in a landscape dominated by the Missouri River valley at approximately 800 feet elevation. The region experiences four distinct seasons with humid summers reaching into the 90s and winter temperatures frequently dropping below freezing. Most cabin facilities remain open year-round though winter visitors should contact locations directly to confirm off-season availability.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: 40-acre lake at Big Lake State Park Campground accommodates various angling styles. "Both back in and pull through sites available with electric, dump site, and fresh water fill station. Hosts are very friendly and drive around with firewood right on the back," notes Sam C. The lake supports multiple fish species for year-round fishing.

Biking on paved trails: Families enjoy the flat, paved pathways at Lewis and Clark State Park Campground for cycling. "The roads to, around, and within the campground are paved and great for a family walk or bike-riding," explains Tori G. The entire campground perimeter can be cycled in under 30 minutes.

Kayak rentals: Several campgrounds offer paddle craft for visitors without their own equipment. "Kayak rental is available but if fishing isn't your thing this might not be the park for you," mentions Carissa H. about Big Lake State Park. Water activities generally run from April through October depending on weather conditions.

What campers like

Level, accessible sites: Many cabins sit on well-maintained grounds. "The sites appear mostly all level and gravel. We had a pull through and it was perfect for overnight. Full hook up and shade," reports Brenda L. from AOK Campground & RV Park. This makes cabin access straightforward for visitors with mobility considerations.

Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention facility maintenance. "Very well cared for site. It's been well established for many years," writes Julie H. about AOK Campground. Regular cleaning schedules maintain bathroom and shower buildings at most locations.

Wildlife viewing: The Missouri River valley attracts diverse bird species and small mammals. "The grounds have private bathrooms with toilets and showers. There are two nice playgrounds and a swimming pool. Most campers were enjoying fishing in the small lake," Sarah H. notes about Big Lake State Park. Morning hours provide optimal wildlife observation opportunities.

What you should know

Highway noise factors: Some cabins sit within earshot of major roadways. "The only reason it isn't getting 5 stars is the proximity to the freeway, you can hear it very clearly (jake brakes and all) continuously," explains Stephanie B. from AOK Campground. Sites further from highways generally command higher rates.

Airport proximity: Basswood Country RV Resort lies under flight paths for nearby Kansas City International. "The campground is on the final approach for the airport, so you get to see a lot planes flying overhead, which you don't even notice cause they are quieter than they used to be," explains Brian A. Flight activity typically diminishes after 10 pm.

Off-season limitations: Facility availability changes seasonally. "The game room, the restaurant, and store were all closing or closed," notes Angela C. about Basswood Country RV Resort during an August visit. Calling ahead confirms which amenities remain operational during your planned stay.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple cabin locations feature play equipment. "This campground is a must for anyone with children. Awesome sites with full hook ups. They have several ponds you can fish from. My kids love that. Nice play area for kids," Robin R. mentions about Watkins Mill State Park Campground.

Organized activities: Weekend programming engages younger visitors. "Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie," Tori G. notes about Basswood Country RV Resort. Activity schedules typically post at campground offices.

Swimming options: Seasonal aquatic facilities operate at several locations. "My kids did get some pool time (it was a nice pool) and loved the blob (whatever you call the bounce pads)," Angela C. shares about Basswood Country. Most pool facilities operate from Memorial Day through Labor Day, weather permitting.

Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: Mozingo Lake County RV Park offers varied cabin locations. "Nice sites close to the lake with electricity water and wifi," Dave M. explains. Requesting sites away from high-traffic areas ensures quieter stays.

Dump station logistics: Some cabins lack individual sewer connections. "Concrete Pads with Power and Water at the Site but no Sewer dump, that's Centralized in the Camp," notes Rick K. about Mozingo Lake. Planning bathroom usage accordingly prevents last-minute dumping rushes during checkout times.

Supply planning: On-site stores stock limited essentials. "This place is very nice. Very clean bathhouses and property, friendly staff, nice pool, great fishing, fun family activities, nice camp store/pizza kitchen," Abbie G. shares about Basswood Country RV Resort. Bringing specialized items from home prevents disappointment when local supplies run short.
