    Watkins Mill State Park Campground

    Peaceful

We stayed Sunday-Wednesday and it was very peaceful. Sites are not right on top of each other and it looks like they all have a fire pit and picnic table. There are only a handful of paved spots and you will need leveling blocks on the gravel. Showers and bathrooms are clean and the hosts are very nice. New asphalt roads throughout the park; nice for walking, biking, etc. Be sure to get biscuits & gravy at “The General Store” just down the road from the park entrance.

    Big Lake State Park Campground

    Clean and Friendly off I-29

My husband and I tent camped one night at this park. We arrived around 8 pm and even though the office was getting ready to close, the woman behind the counter was very kind and helpful. She helped us with finding our spot and with getting firewood. Our basic tent site was lakeside and had a fire pit and picnic table. The site was so well maintained it was hard to find small sticks for kindling.

The grounds have private bathrooms with toilets and showers. There are two nice playgrounds and a swimming pool. Most campers were enjoying fishing in the small lake. Kayaks were available to rent for a small fee. Kids enjoyed riding bikes around the flat roads.

This is a great spot off I-29 to set up camp and have a rest. It's also a good spot to take young kids fishing.

    Big Lake State Park Campground

    Small quiet park

Small park.sites are right next to each other. Picnic tables and fire pits are on site gravel. All roads are narrow one way with the dumpstation at the back end of park with trash dumpsters there. So on a sunday you will get stuck in the dumpstation line to drop off your trash even if you don't need to dump. Bathrooms are clean and well maintained. Sites are pretty level. Great playground area for the kids.

    Basswood Country RV Resort

A great place to take the kids/grandkids

We have been camping at Basswood for several years, first with our children and now with our grandchildren. Basswood provides amenities that are great for entertaining children, includinga swimming pool and splash park, two playgrounds, a basketball goal, and fishing. Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie. There is a great little store with alcohol for the adults; ice cream treats, which we enjoy after a swim; and nearly any key item you might have forgotten to pack. Most roads throughout the campground are paved, and the campground is generally well-maintained. We appreciate the full-service RV spots, but there are very nice bathroom facilities, including showers, in two locations in the park.

    Worlds of Fun Village

    Novel Campground in Kansas City

This was an interesting stay at the Worlds of Fun campground. Located on the property there are RV sites and rental cabins. All RV sites were concrete with 50/30/20 amp, water and sewer. Back-in sites on rows 1 and 3 and pull through sites on row 2.

The theme park offered discounted tickets when staying at the campground and parking for the parks was included. Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun are internally connected, making it easy to walk between the two.

There is a pool, hot tub, laundry and clean bathrooms with showers. The campground did attempt to improve privacy with strategically placed trees and shrubs.

Row 1 (sites 1-20) is along a busy highway with semi truck noise 24 hours a day. I recommend either paying more for the pull-through (further from the road) or the back in sites 69-82 in row 3.

Security was disappointing, as there was no gate to the campground, nor a gate around it. So our campsite (site 2) that backed up to the road was 10 feet off the public sidewalk. Reviews of this campsite on other websites mentioned some petty theft, so we kept our outdoor compartments locked (nothing was stolen).

    Big Lake State Park Campground

    nice, basic campground

The state park is well maintained but doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles! Sites are flat, mostly pull through. Bathrooms and showers are nice and clean. Pool was closed for construction when we stayed, but looked nice. They have really nice little cabins for rent is camping isn’t your strong suit! Not much in the area to visit if fishing isn’t your thing though! There is a drive through nature preserve fairly close but we didn’t go do it. Kayak rental is available but if fishing isn’t your thing this might not be the park for you. Lots of flat roads for biking though!

    Basswood Country RV Resort

    Tidy and well run park

This park is convient to I-29 but far enough off the highway to be quiet and peaceful. Tent sites, full hookups as well as rooms and cabins are available. As a point of interest, this used to be a favorite fishing spot of President Harry S. Truman, check out the Mother in Law cabin—built at his request.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Big Lake State Park Campground, visitors can fish from the shoreline or bring boats to access deeper waters. According to one visitor, "Nice lake, campground was good, there are basic sites up against the lake and the rest are electric... They have nice park, picnic areas and boat ramp. You can kayak, canoe, jet ski, and boat. Its olny 30ft at the deepest point."

Hiking and biking trails: The 3.75-mile paved trail around Watkins Mill State Park Campground provides accessible outdoor recreation. One camper notes, "The roads to, around, and within the campground are paved and great for a family walk or bike-riding." Another visitor adds, "There is a trail to walk or bike ride."

Historic site exploration: Several cabin rental locations provide access to regional history. At Watkins Mill, campers can tour the historic woolen mill. As one visitor explains, "If you like history, take a tour of the woolen mill part. Very cool." These educational opportunities are available during regular park hours and typically involve small entrance fees.

What campers like

Privacy options: Tent campers seeking more privacy will find dedicated spaces at AOK Campground. As one visitor observed, "The tent area was nice with lots of room between them. We would have stayed longer than one night, but we were on our way to the Ozarks." Some tent sites feature extra vegetation for additional seclusion.

Family-friendly atmosphere: Lewis and Clark State Park Campground receives praise for its welcoming environment for families. One camper reports, "This campground is a great setting for a quiet family weekend. The roads to, around, and within the campground are paved and great for a family walk or bike-riding. Most camping spots have at least some shade, and there is a playground for children and a small lake nearby for swimming and which draws in wildlife."

Clean facilities: Most cabins near De Kalb offer well-maintained bathrooms and shower facilities. One visitor to Lewis and Clark State Park noted, "Bathrooms have AC and are cleaned with disinfectant daily. Very clean campground and has a playground. Pet friendly." Regular maintenance schedules help ensure consistent cleanliness standards throughout peak seasons.

What you should know

Highway noise levels: Some cabin locations experience traffic noise from nearby roadways. At Worlds of Fun Village, one visitor warns, "Row 1 (sites 1-20) is along a busy highway with semi truck noise 24 hours a day. I recommend either paying more for the pull-through (further from the road) or the back in sites 69-82 in row 3."

Seasonal operations: Many cabin facilities operate on limited schedules. Worlds of Fun Village runs from March through October, while others maintain year-round operations. Water systems at some parks may be winterized during colder months, limiting facility access.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Multiple cabin locations feature dedicated children's play areas. One visitor to Perry State Park Campground commented, "The campground is kept up great! Enjoy going there each time! We just had a family get together where we rented 6 sites. It accommodated us all!" Group sites often cluster around playground facilities for easier supervision.

Safety considerations: Many cabin areas offer enclosed, monitored environments. Lewis and Clark State Park gets praise for visibility: "was great kids playing with each other going from group to group getting more kids to play. You can see them from anywhere in the camp ground." This layout provides peace of mind for parents while allowing children appropriate independence.

Tips from RVers

Site spacing considerations: Campgrounds with cabins typically feature variable site spacing. At AOK Campground, visitors appreciate the layout: "Appreciate the back to back campsites so your neighbors sewer isn't in your area." This design creates more usable outdoor space for each site.

Utility connections: Most cabin areas offer variable hookup options. For those bringing RVs instead of using cabins, note that many state parks lack sewer connections at individual sites. As one Perry State Park visitor noted, "Like most state parks no sewer hookups but easy access to dump station."
