Boat-in access defines the experience at Stumphges Rapids Landing, a primitive dispersed campsite along the Mississippi Headwaters Water Trail in the state forest. The DNR no longer maintains this as a full-scale water trail site, so campers find a basic clearing with tent space, fire ring, stump seating, and a bench overlooking the river, but no water pump or latrine facilities.
The site sits on a bluff above one of the more undeveloped sections of the Mississippi headwaters, though the campsite itself shows wear from limited maintenance. Campers must bring their own water and practice Leave No Trace principles for waste disposal. While accessible by both paddling and driving during warmer months, winter access requires skiing or snowmobiling. The location works for paddlers wanting a rustic overnight stop, though nearby Fox Trap Canoe Campsite offers more developed amenities for those preferring maintained facilities.
