    Whitetail Woods Camper Cabins

Great camper cabins for spring and fall

Each cabin has four sleeping spots: 2 bunk beds, and the 2 couches convert to beds. There's a heater inside, but no AC, which makes these the most suitable during the spring and fall.

There is a fire ring outside of each cabin, along with a table. No cooking is allowed inside the cabins, which can make things rough if the weather isn't cooperating.

We enjoy hiking around the trails, but we primarily go to decompress, lounge around, and play games, read, etc. There's WiFi available, but depending on which cabin you reserve signal will be took weak for real usage. Same for mobile data -- don't plan on cell service here.

The bathroom facilities are nice. Outside water is shut off during some parts of the year, so bring your own drinking water if you are camping close to/during winter.

Cabins are accessible for those who need special assistance, which is nice. The only caveat is I don't recall there being an automatic door opener to the cabins.

While the cabins are close together, noise is not a factor once you're inside.

It's difficult to get reservations, so I recommend trying to start booking 120 days in advance, which is the farthest out you can reserve. For example, as of this review (early June), all weekends are booked for all cabins.

    Chester Woods Park

    Nice County Park

Nice park for everyone’s type from tents, cabins and all size RV’s. Electric only at the camp sites but have water and dump station on site. Clean bathrooms and showers. Best value I’ve seen for fire wood. Has many walking trails that you can take your dog on and just a couple that you can’t.

    Whitetail Woods Camper Cabins

    Great Cold Weather Option

Super simple camping cabins. They each have 4 spots and have contactless entry as you get sent a code to use. There is no cooking inside the cabin so you have to use the fire ring outside. Shower facilities are really nice and match the cabins. Plan ahead as these are hard to come by.

Minneiska Campground — Whitewater State Park

Crowded with RVs, but nice and quiet on the periphery

Drinking water had already been turned off for the season, but the bathroom still had running water and flush toilets in mid-October. Easy access to hiking trails. My site was close in distance to adjacent ones, but was on the edge by the creek, so it was pretty quiet. None of the cart-in sites were vacant the night I stayed, but those looked lovely as well.

    Chester Woods Park

    Great weekend spot!

Chester Woods is a county park just east of Rochester, MN. It has a campground and man-made lake (created when Bear Creek was dammed for a flood control project) with hiking trails, a horse trail, picnic shelters, a beach, and a playground. The campsites have nice, soft ground for tents, and electrical outlets are available. It can get noisy on the weekend, but the sites are nice along the edge of the campground.

The lake offers the opportunity to fish for panfish, catfish, and bass. There are a lot of submerged trees from before the Creek was dammed that provide good habitat in deep water, and there is also good shoreline structure and weed beds. There is a fish cleaning house next to the campground which has electric lighting, but no running water.

Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park

    convenient get away

We took a 30 minute drive north of the cities for a quick get away, and were rewarded with a very nice campground!

The check in staff was friendly, helpful and efficient. She gave us the info we needed for wood and other campgrounds in the area.

Our site was clear, flat and grassy, and had an established fire pit. Other loops had grills and hook ups for pop-up campers and RVs.

There is a gorgeous beach area with tables, a pavilion, changing rooms and a well equipped playground.

We walked a portion of the trails towards the golf course, on a paved path under a green canopy.

Plenty of bugs, so bring your spray!

Minneiska Campground — Whitewater State Park

Family Friendly and Laid Back Exploring

We stayed for 2 nights at Whitewater State Park with a group of 4. Site 53 was close to the showers and water spigot and it was a big enough spot for 2 tents while being private. It was a 10-20 minute walk to anywhere else. We hiked up chimney rock for some great vistas, swam at the sandy beach, bought ice cream sandwiches at the nature store, and enjoyed talking with the visitor center staff. There were a lot of picnic spots, pavilions, and fire pits for day trips. There were a lot of fresh black berries all around the state park which were fun to gather and eat. The Elba Firetower was a quick 3 miles down the road by car and was a nice little outing. Whitewater was a bit spread out for our liking and unfortunately the woman's shower/bathroom had toilets that were pulled off the entire weekend so you could see and smell raw sewage. Once they fix the bathrooms it'd be a 5 star knowing you'd have to walk a bit. We would stay again at 53, but sites 62, 63, 64 or the walk in sites looked awesome since they were along the river. They are expanding the state park camping which will be a welcomed update and addition.

    Afton State Park Campground

    Hiking and Yurting

I have stayed multiple times in the hike in camp sites and also in the yurt! The hike in sites were beautiful with a view looking over the St. Croix River. It was a shaded site perfect for our hammocks, it was quiet and very secluded. The Yurt was very cool! Very comfortable beds and plenty of space for the 6 of us to stay and sleep. The fire pit and picnic table wasn't far from the yurt which made it nice to not have to walk too far since we camped in the winter. I highly suggest the expeeience of the yurt!

Minneiska Campground — Whitewater State Park

The heart of south eastern Minnesota

Whitewater is by far one of the top state parks in Minnesota. Their camping facilities are clean with running water and free showers. The campsites are quite spacious but not too wooded. They have a few walk in sites but they go fast.

The best part about whitewater are the trails and views. It is located in a carved glacier valley and is surrounded by limestone. I recommend moderate to experienced hikers due to the intense climb to get to the popular views. It’s worth the visit!

Guide to Red Wing

Glamping in Red Wing, Minnesota provides access to the Mississippi River valley with elevations ranging from 680 to 1,140 feet and diverse terrain of bluffs, valleys, and waterways. The region experiences four distinct seasons with summer temperatures averaging 75-85°F and winter dropping to 5-20°F. Most glamping accommodations have enhanced amenities compared to standard campsites, with some sites requiring moderate hiking through oak and maple forest lands.

What to Do

River fishing access: Minneiska Campground offers excellent spots for trout fishing along spring-fed waters. "I hiked 11 miles here and it was awesome," notes Mike K., who enjoyed the extensive trail system alongside fishing opportunities.

Beach recreation: Despite being inland, several sites have swimming areas during summer months. "Highlight of this location is beach which is nice for swim and sun bath. But beach isn't motor vehicle accessible so expect 5-10 min walk," explains Alison at Afton State Park.

Hiking trail networks: The area features interconnected trails with varying difficulty levels. "Lots of hiking. Nice campsites. Beautiful park," reports Chris S. about the trail systems that connect many glamping sites to scenic overlooks and natural features.

Wildlife viewing: Early mornings offer optimal wildlife spotting opportunities. "We heard Barred Owls and Sandhill Cranes. The cranes flew over making strange LOUD calls. Cool," shares Mary K. about her experience at Rice Lake Campground.

What Campers Like

Varied terrain options: Kruger Campground provides diverse site settings. "Very affordable, a lot of space between sites so you feel like you have some privacy. A beautiful hiking trail," reports Erica about the rustic glamping experience.

Waterfront views: Proximity to water features ranks highly among visitor preferences. "This is a great family campground! Camping spots are rather close, but we have two little ones so they made friends quick with other children," says Angela L., who appreciated the lake views and family-friendly atmosphere.

Privacy between sites: Several glamping locations provide natural buffers between accommodations. "The sites are wooded and the woods made it very secluded. It was close enough to water and bathrooms so it wasn't bad if you planned," explains Adam P. about the canvas accommodations.

Modern comforts: Enhanced amenities distinguish glamping from traditional camping. "Camper Cabin (Eastern Bluebird) perfect little cabin nestled in the southern half of the park! Screened in porch, heated with electricity, and two double bunk beds," describes Alison O. about her stay at Afton State Park.

What You Should Know

Seasonal limitations: Most glamping accommodations operate from April through October with limited winter availability. "Super simple camping cabins. They each have 4 spots and have contactless entry as you get sent a code to use," explains Scott M. about the Whitetail Woods Camper Cabins that remain open year-round.

Reservation requirements: Book 3-4 months in advance for peak season weekends. "It's difficult to get reservations, so I recommend trying to start booking 120 days in advance, which is the farthest out you can reserve," advises Blair about securing glamping sites.

Access challenges: Some premium sites require physical effort to reach. "The hike to the campground is short and grueling. A few of the sites are in wooded areas, but we stayed in one of the prairie sites," notes Andrew C., highlighting the effort needed to reach certain glamping locations.

Water availability: Water access varies significantly by location and season. "This may be an ongoing issue but none of the water faucets or water pumps on the trails at Afton State Park are working. The good news is you can fill up on cold drinking water at the visitor center," warns Warren H.

Tips for Camping with Families

Playground proximity: Lake Byllesby Regional Park offers family-friendly amenities. "The playground is a short walk to the tent area, which was a big hit with our kids. Our girls didn't want to leave!" shares Angela L., noting the convenient recreation options.

Educational opportunities: Several sites offer interpretive programs during summer weekends. "We had so much fun playing on the river and exploring the park! Everything is right there and the river is so pretty! Despite the rain we had a great time! Because of the rain we went to the eagle center near Wisconsin. A must see if your looking for something indoors!" recommends Kate H.

Swimming options: Family-friendly water features are available but vary by location. "Less than an hour drive from Minneapolis this is a good get away. As expected it has many walk trails. Highlight of this location is beach which is nice for swim and sun bath," explains Alison.

Winter activities: Cold-weather glamping provides unique experiences for families. "The cabins in the woods are great in winter with snow on the pine trees. The cabins are well-built and heated. The wooded cabins have what seems like full-sized mattress bunk beds built into the wall," reports Krista T.

Tips from RVers

Site sizing concerns: Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park accommodates various RV sizes but with limitations. "This campground is very nice and well kept. Clean thru out the park. Some very nice shaded sites. Not the greatest for big RV's," advises Tim B. about parking larger rigs.

Electrical hookup options: Power availability varies significantly between sites and campgrounds. "Lakeside sites are close together, with W/E hookups, but they're right in the lake with a wonderful view. The facilities are very clean and well-kept," notes Deb M. about the electrical service options.

Water and utility connections: Plan accordingly for limited hookups at some locations. "Very nice water front sites, clean, clean restrooms and showers, dump station. Plan on coming back. They're adding a bunch new sites. Should be ready for next season," shares Daryl L. about site improvements.

Paved pad availability: Some glamping sites offer improved parking surfaces for RVs. "Nice showers and restrooms. Paved RV pads. Near lake and excellent bike path. Great brewery and winery close by," recommends Daryl L. about the hard-surface parking options.
