    Quiet place

This is a quiet friendly neighborhood of Rv’s and small cabins located on Blackduck lake . There is a swimming pool and hot tub. The hot tub wasn’t working when I was there. There is an on site laundry unit. There is a fish cleaning house as well for the fisherman. You can take short drive or walk to the local golf course. A little down the road is a convenience store with all your fishing needs including licenses and bait. Limited availability of houses for sale and there is a waiting list for RVs. It is closed for the winter and everyone has to be out of the houses too.

    Natural Luxury

We love Minnesota, almost more than we love Wisconsin - only because the natural beauty and the numerous, non-ending lakes to explore. Instead of “ruffing it” we decided to treat ourselves with a cabin rental and don’t regret the splurge. Adorable cabins, with nice layout, on Pine Mountain Lake, which is one of many is of Minnesota's hidden treasured lakes. I don’t fish but it was fun watching others. This stay was quiet, relaxing and we left feeling rejuvenated. Excellent amenities and folks. Ya know, MN nice is a thing!

Highbanks Resort Campground on Lake Winnie

Full service resort with camping available at High Banks landing

This is a full service fishing resort with a lodge and cabin rental, but RV and tent camping is also available. The campsites are very nice and wooded, the tenting sites include some very secluded spots back in the woods which is nice for solitude but precludes a view of the lake. There are daily rates as well as weekly rates for camping or cabin stays. This is a top notch place to stay for a fishing vacation, off the beaten path but with full amenities. It can be a destination vacation spot, or can be a great stop-over  for through-paddlers crossing Lake Winnie on the Mississippi River Headwaters Water Trail. Although near the National Forest campground on Tamarack Point, this has many more amenities which is nice when you are so far from the nearest town, especially if you are paddling through and have no vehicle for travel. Amenities include groceries, ice cream shop, full service boat launch and fishing supplies, and more. You might not be into winter camping in a tent, but there are ice houses to rent that you could camp in if you come in winter. More expensive than usual campgrounds, but with more amenities provided and with a stellar location. Pets welcome at no extra charge! Seasonal campsite rental can also be arranged.

    Pines Resort & Camp Grounds

Great camping and cabins close to Winnie Dam

This is primarily a cabin resort, however camping is also offered for both RV's and tenters. Camping rates are a little hard to find on the website, so check them at this link:https://www.thepinesresort.com/camping/camping-rates

There is a nice swimming area and dock on the lake, a camp store, boat rentals, laundry facilities, etc. I think staying in the cabins might be a nicer experience for a long term stay, as the campsites are rather open and close together, but the lake access and amenities are favorable for a short stay.

For through paddlers on the Mississippi Headwaters Water Trail, this is the most convenient campsite above the Winnie Dam. The tent sites are only $25 per night, you have more amenities than at the COE or Forest campgrounds on the other side of the dam, and your portage around the dam from the campground to the boat launch below is super easy if you have a canoe or kayak cart--just pull out at the resort boat launch dock, cart your craft a short walk on the paved road across the dam, and put in at the COE boat launch below the dam.Much preferable to scaling the dam on the steep rocky portage that is on the east side of the dam, plus you have a decent and reasonably priced place to camp the night before.  So for that type of camping, this spot is ideal!

    Best hosts/owners, beautiful place

We have been coming here for years, some families come for generations. We started renting a cabin for a week, and now bring our RV here. Beautiful pristine cabins, the owners get to know everyone personally, beautiful out-of-the-way place. Great family fishing resort.

    Hard to leave

We stayed last year at their campground (tent area) and had a wonderful time and returned again this year this time renting a cabin. The tent area is limited they do have electricity and close to bathrooms (with showers) They have many RV spots, cabins and tent grounds. There is a restaurant, beach/playground, indoor pool, game room and boat launch/marina where you can rent boats/pontoons and peddle boats. Our family has had a great time each time and is where we will always return to in the future.

    Becker's Resort & Campground

    For vacation, or paddler stopover

Becker’s resort is a vacation destination for many folks in the summer, with offerings of cabins, RV campsites, and tent sites. The RV sites are not near the water and to me seem a little crowded, but the RV area is nestled in some nice woods. The cabins appear to be modern and recently renovated with new siding etc, and seem to be great for families. There is a nice pool, and a good boat launch and marina with easy access to the Mississippi River and Lake Winnie. Of importance to paddlers on the Mississippi River Water Trail, this is definitely an upgraded alternative to the primitive water trail campsite located just upstream, called Smiling Joe Landing, and I would recommend this one over that one. Not only do you have a nice tenting area close to the river, but you also have access to the pool and showers, flush toilets, etc, and can stock up on snacks. The owners stay alert to area weather, and can give good advice to paddlers about safe routes across Winnie before you launch, depending in weather. They are also paddler-friendly in terms if assisting in other ways, such as letting a recent through-paddler stop and use garage space for a few days to repair a hole in his canoe, which is very kind. I would give this spot a 5-star rating for canoe campers, but a 4 star overall rating for the resort

    Savanna Portage State Park Campground

Savannah Portage for a trek through time

This state park is definitely off the beaten path, with the Savannah Portage itself almost as it 200 years ago when Americans explorers came trekking through. It is worth a visit to the park to experience and learn about 1) the physical geography of the important continental divide that occurs here, dividing the Great Lakes watershed from the Mississippi watershed, and 2) to hike the Savannah Portage to experience and learn about expedition history along this old historic fur trade route. The opportunities for hiking and nature study are really good here. For canoers, there are a couple small lakes within the park, but you can also easily get out to the very large Big Sandy Lake just to the west, and even on to the Mississippi River nearby. As for the camping experience, I would agree that the campsites are a bit small and crowded in, which is a bit on the down side. You might like one if the hike in sites or canoe in site if you want ti be more secluded. On my most recent trip in very early June it was surprisingly bug-free, but it is often really buggy later in summer due to the myriad swamps and marshes in the vicinity. If it is available, you might want to consider the camper cabin! Also, autumn is a spectacular time to visit, lots of color and no bugs, and I have friends who come here in winter, the camper cabin and guesthouse are open year round, I havent stayed with them overnight but did visit for the day one weekend in February, and being in the park in winter for snowshoeing was beautiful and amazing!

Spectacular views, fun for the whole family!

Becker's Resort & Campground is one of my families favorite places to go. From fishing Lake Winnibigosh (which it's located on) to the pool, playground, or arcade, all three kids love Becker's! We've stayed here three times now. One time in a tent. Beautiful site located right next to the water. One time in a motor home. Again next to the water. Great site. And last time we visited we rented a cabin for a week. It was amazing all three times!! Showers could use an upgrade, and all the busted toys in the sandbox is an accident waiting to happen. Stepped on quite a few sharp plastic pieces several times. Other than that we will return with out a doubt another time in the future!

    Lake Emily Resort & Campground

    Amazingly friendly and accommodating staff

This resort and campground only has a few reservable campsites and a couple of cabins (at least one is more like a Park model). There are bathrooms and showers available, but only one of each for each gender. The sites are close together and a bit of a walk to the swimming beach. The staff is amazingly accommodating though and let us put 2 campers per site to accommodate our large group. I was also impressed that they had many beach toys that were able to be used by anyone and a decent playground that is right near the campsites. It rained 4 inches the first night we were there and many of the low lying areas were flooded, but it did not affect any of the campsites and the kids loved playing in the huge puddles.

Big Winnie Store RV Park & Campground

    Camping at historic location

The quality of this campground is really a 4, however the location is a little  bit out of the way for doing day trips, exploring and access to the Chippewa National Forest. It is not on Lake Winnie, so you have to drive to a boat landing to launch your watercraft, and there is swimming at a nearby beach but it is not on the premises. However, the grounds are meticulously maintained and the camping prices cant be beat--$20 a night for tent camping, and $35 a night for full RV campsite with hookups. There is a playground. laundry facilities, and full bathrooms. There are also many walking trails on the premises. The general store on the premises provides staples and treats. If you prefer, there are also vintage cabins you can stay in here. Best of all, staying here supports a local family business including their painstaking efforts to maintain an hisotric general store and vintage vacation spot that was established almost a century ago and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

    Sandy Lake COE Recreation Area

Variety of camping options at Big Sandy

This campground is in a sweet location on the banks of hisotric and beautiful Big Sandy lake. There are standard tent and RV sites, as well as camper cabin options. Some of the campsites are close together in the main campground, but there are also walk-in sites avaiable. This location is family friendly with boat launch, picnicking, playground, and hisotrical exhibits about the dam and its history, and about the old furpost that used to be here. The campground is wooded and shady and the lake is very pristine, and very large so you have options for all kidns of boating and water activities. Of interest for hikers is the nearby Savannah Portage State Park wihich has miles and miles of hiking trails, including the famous historic portage through the Floodwood swamp between the Savannah River, St Louis River, and Mississippi River, which was important for centuries during the fur trade era and for native americans prior to that time. This is a beautiful near-wilderness part of the state, and this campground on beautiful Big Sandy is a real asset. For paddlers on the Mississippi River Water Trail, you only have a short detour of less than 1/2 mile up the Sandy River  from its confluence with the Mississippi River in order to access the campground, and it is a great option in an area of the water trail that doesnt have many other options nearby

    Backpack campsite 1

Was hear earlier in summer—not in October as review date states.

Easy 1.5-2 mile hike in. Bring bug spray as mosquitos can be bad

There is a bear locker, pit toilet, and a shelter on site. This site is very private.

There is no real way to get down to the pond at the bottom of the camp site.

The trails here are nice for hiking but they aren’t extensive and won’t keep you entertained long. The real reason to come here is for water sports on the main lake. Unfortunately during Covid the rentals weren’t available.

Bring a saw to get firewood—you don’t want to lug the wood on with ya.

    Shores Of Leech Lake Campground

RV camping is only so so, but tent camping area is pretty neat!

If you like boats and boating and the water, this would be a good place to be, but if you are looking for peace and quiet, I doubt it'll be all that. This is mainly an RV camping park for those that have boats. It has a waterway in the campground with slips that you can rent for your boats. There are, however, a few tent sites that are kinda cool!

Most of the RV camping is pretty cramped. But I suppose if you have a boat, you'll probably be on it most of the time. That said, it would do the job. Maybe most people stay on their boats at night? There is also firewood for sale, which is convenient, but I don't know how much it cost. They seemed to be pretty well closed for the season. They did have electric hookup and sewage drains too. And for those that were feeling a little less outdoors-y, they had a few cabins for rent on the water.

There are only a few tent sites, and they are in an obscure spot, but it'd actually be a pretty cool place to drop a tent if you wanted something unique. The tent site(s) are on a little point near the water. It's actually on the opposite side from the RV camping, and they are separated by a little waterway that is the inlet/outlet for the area where the boat slips are. So boats would be passing in and out all the time. If you are the private type, this might not be ideal. But if you were looking for something different, it might be fun. However, there is no bathroom nearby that I could find. There is a fire ring and picnic table. And the coolest part...there is a small lighthouse type structure that is simply a screened in building with a table and chairs. It's screened in and the windows can be closed. So, essentially a bug free zone in the summer. Love it! Right next to the tent area. Although it's not clear if these sites are for rent for the general public, or just for friends and family of the boat/RV people. I see conflicting information about this.

Nice campground - a lot of bugs in the summer

Savanna Portage State Park is a beautiful and peaceful spot for camping, especially if you enjoy tent camping. The campsites are well-spaced, private, and perfect for tents, offering a great connection to nature.

The park features a lovely lake that’s ideal for kayaking, fishing, or just relaxing by the water. There are also several great hiking trails, ranging from easy walks to more challenging routes, giving you plenty of opportunities to explore the scenic forest and wetlands.

One thing to note—there are a lot of bugs in the summer, so make sure to pack plenty of bug spray! Overall, it’s a fantastic place for outdoor lovers looking for a quiet and rustic getaway.

Doesnt take long to feel at home!

After walking around and kayaking around I’ve come to realize this place is always full for a reason. The hiking and lake provide something to do for everyone.

The water: boating, kayaking, canoe, and beach to swim. Everyone has something to do here. I kayaking all of the two lakes and there are some good fishing to be had if you can find the right spots. The families were all along the shoreline having a blast! Lots of people out in canoes and very few in boats. Sure there isn’t a lot around the park itself but you don’t need a lot to be around if you are going to nature!

The campground: two campgrounds here. You have the lodge which is smaller and fewer electrics and a little quieter. Sites are a little bigger. I stayed in 78 and it’s right next to the water and where people put in their canoes/kayaks. I had no problem as it’s a deep sore so you can get away from them. Around me it was easy to see everyone which was ok as people were friendly. Sites are bigger which was nice. There is a small loop of electric sites here and non electric mixed in. Chase point is the busy place! Sites are smaller and more on top of one another. Louder when I walked through and less privacy. Hike in sites: these are the place to be! Yea it takes some work to get too but you are never gonna be disappointed as you are isolated form people which is really nice. They are directly on the water and for sure have the best views. Shower houses were very clean and nice so I was very happy to see that with as many people as we have.

The hiking: the trails are not long and not demanding so they are perfect for families. I’d say it was a good time away from the water which was perfect. Some great views of the water but mostly wooded. Of course hike out to chase point for sunrise bc that’s totally worth it.

Overall: yes!!! This place is perfect! It’s up there for a reason! It takes a while to get here and that’s ok. It is very much worth the drive! Highly recommend it.

    Perfect blend of nature!

Following the winding pathway you will come to the campground. It’s situated near four lakes and loads of biking/hiking. There is a lot to do in the area from fishing, hiking, biking, and nature watching. Loon lake has a nice little “park” with a beach so that is great for families.

The campground itself sits next to the lake which is nice and while no site has true waterfront claim several can see the water. I stayed in 22E which was next to a trail head but close to the water spigot and showers. Sites 62/3/4 would be great for a large family as they have loads of space. Showers and restrooms were super clean!

Yes it is buggy but it’s minnesota so you deal with it. There is lots of nature. We saw a bear while hiking the continental divide trail so nature is out there.

Northland Resort and Campground at Winnie Dam

Full service resort with camping available at Winnie Dam

At a rate of$40 a night for camping here with all the amenities of a resort, this is a pretty good deal! Campers have access to the heated pool, free use of canoes and kayaks, there is a camp store and bait shop, showers and bathrooms and indoor recreation facilities in the lodge, and a boat launch(though you do have to pay extra to reserve docking space). The campsites are pet friendly too. However, the campsites are a bit close together and would not be my favorite way to camp. For paddlers crossing Lake Winnie on the Mississippi Headwaters Water Trail, this is a convenient place to camp, with easy pull out to the southwest side of the Winnie dam, and more amenities than the Forest Service campground or COE campground on the other side of the dam. From here, paddlers just have a short portage on the paved road across the dam to the downstream boat launch below it.

    Great beginner backpack campsite

The park has two backpack campsites along small pine lake.  It's an easy 1.5 mile hike to the camp site along flat trails.  The campsite is set back from the trail a good ways so you have complete privacy. There is a "shelter" for rain or snow as well as a fire pit, picnic table, bear locker, and a pit toilet.  The lake is easily accessible to filter water.

We were two of the first groups allowed to camp once the MN DNR resumed camping during Covid-19, so many of the "perks" or the park, such as canoe renting, were not available. Also, the old fire tower is locked up and should not be climbed.

We were there in late May and the mosquitos were HORRIBLE, despite it being colder and windier than average.

Stayed at campsite #9 in Chase Point Campground and had good tree coverage and space from other campers with potable water right next to the site. We hiked backcountry the following day to BC #1 and it was a moderate hike with a descent view atop a hill looking out at Pine Lake. The site was beautiful with big pines and a shelter.
