    Lakefront camping

General: RV style camping on Pomme de Terre Lake and Kenny Lake. Many sites are lakefront or have a view of the lake. We were one of the few (if not only) non-seasonal campers at this campground.

Site Quality: Our site was located directly behind the store/office but had a view of the lake. Parking was on grass. The site was level and had an electric hookup. A wooden picnic table (in good shape) and a fire ring complete the site. When I called to make a reservation, I asked for a non-electric site but was told the primitive sites are far from the restrooms. I’m glad we settled on an electric site as the primitive ones, besides the distance from the restrooms, would also only be suitable for tents.

Bath/Shower house: Reasonably clean but I’ve seen better. Two showers, two toilets, and one sink. The shower had hot water and good flow, but it was cramped with little room to get dressed (plus the showers are located right inside the door, impeding privacy.

Activities: All the activities you would associate with lakefront camping. None of these applied to us but it was a good overnight location for passing through. Several speed boats zoomed by on the lake, and I imagine that on a summer weekend, the boat traffic would be much increased. There is a fish cleaning station. There are nice docks with benches to enjoy the view of the lake/sunset.

This campground is not our preferred type of camping – no privacy between sites but on a weekday toward the end of August, it was very quiet (but still HOT). We appreciate that we were assigned a lakeview site as not all of them are.

    Hartford Beach State Park Campground

    Uncrowded and Beautiful

Vibe: Almost empty on Monday night. Quiet natural lake setting.

    Cleanliness: Exceptional.

    Facilities: Updated and well maintained.

General spots: Good size, good spacing, ok privacy. Lots of trees

Our site: 20. Across from our site was a little trail down to the lake. In the evening we saw tons of fish and an otter. The electric hook up is pretty far from the picnic table/fire ring area. Have a long cord.

Noise: Only 4 sites were occupied out of 30 or so. Completely quiet all evening.

    Cell signal: Good (Verizon)

Other: Spectacular sunsets and sunrises. Cell phone pictures do not do it justice.

    Norway Beach Resort

    Average campground. Good fishing.

This resort is located on Stalker Lake, outside of Dalton MN in Ottertail County. The resort has 4 smaller cabins for rent ranging from 3 nights for $500 to 3 nights for $790. There is a minimum of 3 nights for the cabins that are equipped with a bathroom & kitchen. The cabins are not modern, furnishings are a bit outdated, but provide a clean getaway on a nice fishing lake. Tent camping is $20 per night and RV/Campers are $50 per night with electric, water and sewer hookups.

Lac qui Parle Upper Campground — Lac qui Parle State Park

    Spacious and tranquil

Lots of space between sites. There are not many trees so not much shade. Sites are gravel and relatively level, not much leveling required. Variety of sites, from group camping, primitive (no hookups), electric only, full hookups (water, electric, sewer) as well as cabins and tent only areas. Limited hiking trails connected to campground. Surrounded on two sides by farm fields and Lac Qui Parle Lake on another. There are two loops in the campground. One loop has view of the lake. Boat/canoe launch is in lower campground about 10 minutes from Upper Campground. Recycling and garbage dumpsters on site. Dump station near entrance. Verizon cell signal is poor. Pit toilets available. Bathhouse is centrally located, includes private showers. No laundry on site. Nearby attractions in Montevideo include Talking Waters Brewery/taproom, Jake’s pizza and Java River cafe (with outdoor seating, dog friendly).

    Hartford Beach State Park Campground

    Nice place!

This was a nice find! Sites pretty close together, especially those in the middle. Some, however, were right on the lake or had paths that lead to a picnic table & fire ring closer to the water. As another reviewer mentioned, one of the loops has sites that are not very level. It was not a problem though. Trails seemed nice & it was a nice surprise to find the dock & bridge near our site. Beach was nice! It was a decent walk there, but at least had a trail to the beach. Nice playground too.

    County Line Campground

    Nice people with helpful suggestions

This is a welcoming experience with hosts who are happy to make your stay comfortable. It is near a very small town and close to the Interstate (less than one mile). The pull through sites are somewhat close together with no foliage to offer privacy but it is clean and well kept. We decided to stay in a back-in site further away from the office and pull through sites. Before we were even set up the host had brought us a beautiful, little picnic table and set it out front for us. They gave us leaflets about the area and we talked fishing possibilities with them. They have laundry and showers available as well as bait, ice, and I think even propane. We extended our stay here as it was a great place to just chill and take some exploratory drives. Although there isn't much shade to offer protection from the sun, they do have full hook ups so we could run air conditioning. We would definitely stay here again.

    Glacial Lakes State Park Campground

    Located in Central MN

The trails in the park have nice rolling hills and offer a unique type of beauty. The campground is small, but offers some electric sites as well as some primitive sites. I do believe there were 2 or 3 cabins that I saw. Unsure if there is a group camp with this campground being so small as it is. Firewood is available at the check in/office building. There is a bathroom/shower building in the loop with the electric sites. The electric loop and primitive loops both have vault toilets. Each loop also has a few water stations to fill containers with potable water and each loop has a dumpster for disposing of waste. Not sure if there is a dump station for RVs as I typically use a tent when camping. Nice state park in Rural central Minnesota

The region sits at approximately 1,100 feet elevation with summer temperatures averaging 80-85°F and winter lows often below 0°F. Seasonal flooding can impact campground availability, particularly along the Pomme De Terre River.

What to do

Water recreation on Big Stone Lake: Hartford Beach State Park Campground provides excellent lake access. "There are 2 separate camp areas with 2 completely different types of sites. The sites near the lake are very wooded, a bit smaller and pretty uneven. The sites themselves are even but your canopy might be overhanging a slope," explains one visitor.

Hiking on prairie trails: Explore the varied terrain at Glacial Lakes State Park Campground. "Our favorite part of this trip was renting stand up paddle boards. The lake water was crystal clear and glass like calm. The weekend we camped it was scorching hot. Most of the hiking trails in the park were through the prairie grass. The High Peak Trail did have some lovely views though!"

Fishing opportunities: Multiple lakes in the region offer fishing options. At Pomme De Terre Campground, visitors can enjoy "pretty nice campground with water and electric. Bathhouse, walking trails, fishing and beautiful lake views. Some sites are a little difficult to get into but not impossible."

What campers like

Quiet weekday stays: Mid-week reservations often provide a more peaceful cabin camping experience. At Hartford Beach State Park Campground, one camper noted the "Vibe: Almost empty on Monday night. Quiet natural lake setting. Cleanliness: Exceptional. Facilities: Updated and well maintained."

Lakefront views: Many cabins and campsites offer direct lake access. "This was a nice campground on the lake. The sites are not very private and some of the fire pits are far away from the camping pad, they are down the hill by the lake. They have nice hiking trails," according to a visitor at Hartford Beach.

Clean facilities: Tipsinah Mounds City Park maintains well-kept amenities. "We've camped a few times and always had a great time! The lake views are spectacular." Another visitor noted, "Had so much fun. It was quiet. Close to the beach. Showers and bathrooms are clean. Front desk is amazing."

What you should know

Seasonal flooding risk: Water levels can impact site availability and accessibility. At Pomme De Terre Campground, a camper shared: "We stayed on the Pittsburgh side and found the campground amazing! Until it flooded. We were evacuated and moved to higher ground. The spot we had first was 311 and it was great until it flooded."

Prairie insects: Bug populations vary by season and location. One visitor at Andes RV Park advised: "Side note: if coming in summer make sure to bring plenty of bug spray!!!"

Site spacing varies: Privacy between sites differs significantly between campgrounds. At Tipsinah Mounds City Park, a visitor observed: "We were one of the few (if not only) non-seasonal campers at this campground. Our site was located directly behind the store/office but had a view of the lake. Parking was on grass."

Tips for camping with families

Playground facilities: Tipsinah Mounds City Park offers activities for children. "We stayed in V5. Not lakeside but nicely secluded. There is a nice beach and the lake is clear. There is a big playground, basketball court, and ball field. The store has necessities and they will even make you a pizza and deliver to your site."

Cabin selection: Confirm cabin size and sleeping capacity before booking. "The cabins at Glacial Lakes State Park were really amazing. Fishing Pier and a small lake to canoe and kayak on. I'd definitely come back," according to one family.

Recreation variety: Multiple activities keep children engaged. "In the afternoon they have a hay ride (without the hay) around the grounds, kids loved it. Shower facilities were clean, and they have a nice set up of handicap accessible showers and bathroom," noted a visitor at Tipsinah Mounds.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Check campground reviews for information about site grading. At Lac qui Parle Upper Campground, "Lots of space between sites. There are not many trees so not much shade. Sites are gravel and relatively level, not much leveling required."

Hookup positioning: Note the location of utility connections when setting up. "The electric hook up is pretty far from the picnic table/fire ring area. Have a long cord," advised a visitor at Hartford Beach State Park.

Wind exposure: Prairie campgrounds offer limited wind protection. "This is a prairie setting, essentially a very large grassy field without trees or shrubs to provide privacy from neighbors or protection from winds. The campsites are well-spaced, so that provides some cushioning distance," noted a camper at Lac qui Parle.
