Backcountry Camping

The sites are right on Lake Desor which is lovely. The downside is that they are very impacted and the iron rich soil has a tendency to stain everything, especially if it's damp but oh well. The water, while easy to reach and treat, tastes pretty horrible even mixed with coffee or something else. Totally fine to cook with and didn't make much difference with food but something to be aware of. The sites are kind of close to one another but there is a fair amount of vegetation between the sites. The privy was clean and nice to have access to. Our site was large enough to accommodate two, two-person shelters and have a little kitchen area. Definitely not the best spot we stayed on the island, but beautiful none-the-less!

What's that noise? The sound of a trillion mosquitos!!!

South Lake Desour was my least favorite campsite on Isle Royale National Park. It felt suffocating with the afternoon heat and the bugs were insane. About 8:00 p.m. you had to dive into your tents to survive the mosquitos. The noise sounded like a jet engine out side the tent. Anyone without a bug net would be miserable.

Even at 7:00 a.m. in the morning when we were trying to pack up, we were bitten like crazy. Lesson learned: spray your clothes with permethrin before you go backpacking in Isle Royale. BUT it is Isle Royale national Park so it still gets three stars.

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities are available at South Lake Desor Campground?

South Lake Desor Campground offers minimal backcountry amenities typical of Isle Royale's wilderness experience. The campground provides tent sites located right on Lake Desor with easy lake access for water collection (treatment required). Be aware that the water has a distinct taste due to iron content, even after filtering or treatment. There are basic pit toilets available but no showers, electricity, or running water. Fire rings may be present at some sites. The campground does not offer trash service, so pack out all waste. Prepare for a true wilderness camping experience with essentially no modern conveniences.

How do I find South Lake Desor Campground on Isle Royale?

South Lake Desor Campground is located along the Greenstone Ridge Trail on Isle Royale National Park. The campground sits on the shores of Lake Desor, making it relatively easy to locate once you're on the island. Since Isle Royale is only accessible by ferry or seaplane, you'll need to plan your transportation to the island first, then follow the hiking trails to reach the campground. The National Park Service provides maps of Isle Royale that mark all official campgrounds including South Lake Desor. Be prepared for a significant hike to reach this backcountry site as it's only accessible by foot.

What do South Lake Desor Campground photos show about the site?

Photos of South Lake Desor Campground reveal a rustic backcountry site nestled along the shores of Lake Desor. Images typically showcase tent sites situated in wooded areas with some opening to lake views. The campground has a distinct wilderness feel with minimal development. The iron-rich reddish soil is often visible in pictures, which can stain gear when wet. Photos also highlight the lake access points where campers can collect and treat water. The surrounding forest is dense, creating a secluded atmosphere, though some sites appear more impacted from regular use than others. The natural beauty of Isle Royale's landscape is apparent despite the rustic conditions.

When is the best time to visit South Lake Desor Campground on Isle Royale?

The best time to visit South Lake Desor Campground is during the late spring to early fall when Isle Royale National Park is open (typically mid-April through October). For the most comfortable experience, consider mid-June through early September when temperatures are milder. However, be aware that summer afternoons can be quite hot and buggy at this location. Mosquitoes are particularly intense in the evening hours, especially around 8:00 PM. Early fall may offer fewer insects while still providing reasonable temperatures. Always check with the National Park Service for current conditions and seasonal closures before planning your trip.
