What to do
Trail riding with direct access: Pontiac Lake Recreation Area features a 3,745-acre property with extensive mountain biking trails that coexist with the equestrian paths. "The campground is full but quiet. The bathrooms and showers were nice and clean with hot water. Site 71 wasn't the most private but still nice. The spots are all pretty private due to trees and vegetation," reports Sam H.
Swimming at nearby lakes: Brighton Recreation Area provides lake access with water equipment rentals. "The lake you can rent kayaks, paddle boards, row boats or paddle boats. They offer all types of camping," notes Melissa M. The recreation area includes a beach area and water activities available for an additional fee.
Hiking trail exploration: Highland State Recreation Area offers extensive trail networks through diverse landscapes. "The natural scenery is STUNNING with fields of flowers and trees. We ran up on a group of probably 70 wild turkeys on the trail! There's a quiet lake perfect for unwinding after a long day," writes Adrienne C. The area features historic sites including Haven Hill, a former Ford family retreat from the 1930s.
What campers like
Private campsites: Waterloo Sugarloaf Modern provides spacious sites with some tree cover for shade and privacy. "The property is very well maintained with a nice park and clean bathrooms. The campground has some nice full-grown trees, but isn't extremely wooded. The trees offer shade, but are spaced out enough that a group can pull their campers around for privacy," shares Jonah H.
Year-round accessibility: Many equestrian campgrounds near Flat Rock remain open during multiple seasons. "This rustic campground is obviously well-tended and has an almost magical feel to it. It's private, quiet, and full of wildlife. There are two paved sites for handicapped accessibility, running water, a dumpster, and two outhouses," explains Brett B. about Highland State Recreation Area.
Clean facilities: Campers consistently mention the well-maintained bathrooms and shower facilities at campgrounds in the region. "Spent 4 nights and 5 days camping with my husband and 2 kids. We had fun and the kids had a blast. They rode bikes around the loop and loved swimming and the playground. Facilities were nice and clean," notes Kim S. about her stay at Waterloo Sugarloaf.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Most horse-friendly campgrounds near Flat Rock operate from spring through fall, with limited winter access. "I arrived for a 2 week stay in the area on 11/12. I discovered this campground was closed for the season," reports Mike M. about Wayne County Fairgrounds, which closes October 31 through April 1.
Insect preparation: Bug protection is essential during warmer months. "We stayed at lot M18 of the rustic site, Murray Lake. The site was large and had a picnic table and fire pit. There are TONS of mosquitos," warns Rebecca M. about Brighton Recreation Area.
Site selection considerations: Researching specific campsite locations before booking helps ensure appropriate accommodations. "Our site wasn't level, so we were rolling around a bit. If I went there again I'd try to find a spot towards the end of the loop by the exit. These sites were higher and some of them were private. I'd examine the map carefully because some of the sites were horrendously open and basically on the road," advises Ryan F. about Brighton Recreation Area's rustic sites.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly amenities: Bishop Lake Campground provides family-oriented facilities. "I have been visited bishop lake family campground since I was a little girl. My mom brought us here every summer to have the time of our lives! She came here every summer with HER mom before that! So on and so on. We now officially have 5 generations of bishop lake lovers," shares Kayla Q.
Water activities for children: Several campgrounds offer water recreation options. "It's connected but costs money. $15 for a 45 minute jump session. Follow on Facebook for coupons. You can also just swim at the lake- nice area with shade trees beach and nice lake water. We brought a cooler and ordered ice cream from concessions," explains Beth G. about Jump Island at Bishop Lake.
Unplugged camping experience: Some horse campgrounds near Flat Rock provide opportunities for disconnected family time. "Tenting at its finest... brother his wife and 5 kids my husband at the time and 4 kids reserved a group area and had a blast teaching and showing those who had never camped how fun it could be!! No cell/internet service but that was perfect!! Great time to unplug and just enjoy our surroundings," recounts Tammy P. about her Highland Recreation Area experience.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Hell Creek Ranch & Campground provides various RV site options. "Very clean campground with rustic, elec, water/elec (30 amp), and concrete pad sites. Very clean campground with nice shower house. Owners are very friendly. Direct connections to the Waterloo Pinckney trail system," notes Jason F.
Site levelness: RVers should check site specifications before booking. "Camp site was nice with blacktop pad and once parked felt very secluded and could barely see site past truck in parking spot. Great for getting away and seeing the night sky," reports Daniel about Pontiac Lake Recreation Area.
Long-term stays: Some campgrounds accommodate extended visits. "Wow.. what a nice little getaway in Hell, Michigan area! Camp host, 'Lightening' is a friendly and helpful guy who NEVER stopped working (except to chat with campers here and there). The big pool and bathrooms were immaculate, with surrounding patio furniture sanitized nightly," writes Lisa D. about Hell Creek Ranch, noting their budget-friendly rate of $30/night for water and electric hookups.
