    Tuckahoe State Park Campground

    Perfect First Family Camping Trip

Tuckahoe is a hidden gem on Maryland’s mid-Eastern Shore region. With many of your standard amenities and a quiet atmosphere, it was a great spot for my first time camping with my kids.

Our campsite was on the non-electric loop. We had a small creek and trail back up to our campsite. We only had a handful of neighbors and foot traffic at the time was almost nonexistent, so we practically had the park to ourselves.

There is an electric loop with electric hookup, but no water or sewer. Those can be found at the campground entrance. Each loop has a wood shed and clean, well-appointed bathhouse. There are water pumps along the road for refills.

There are 4 basic cabins on each loop and most sites are designed for RV and/or tent use. There are 3 sites that are tent-only on the non-electric loop.

Multiple trails in the area are widespread. Wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring a map! They also have equestrian trails with an equestrian center nearby. The lakefront boasts a picnic area with individual tables and grills, recycled tire playground, and kayak rentals (for a fee). Fishing is allowed, but no swimming (which was a bummer for us, but exploring some of the local creeks helped provide some relief from the summer heat).

Nearby is Atkins Arboretum. Their 5 mile trail system covers around 400 acres. There are woods, “grasslands,” and “wetlands” to explore the various ecosystems of the Eastern Shore. They also had a goat area and garden play area for children. There is a fee through the Visitor’s Center which supports the center, but some of the trails can be accessed via other Tuckahoe trails.

Centrally located, you’re still within easy access to a local town center (Denton), supplies, and dining. I can’t recommend Tuckahoe enough if you just want a quiet spot or you’re new to camping!

    Artillery Ridge Campground

    Great Location to Battlefield

This park is a perfect location if you want to explore Gettysburg National Historical Site as you can literally walk across the street and be in the park or venture½ mile up the road and you come to the park’s main visitor center. The campground has a bunch of different sites whether you want to spend more money for a premium full hook-up or save a few bucks and just get water and electric. There are lots of tent sites, cabins, and horse stalls with a corral for those traveling with horses. The park is also very close to the historic downtown so you don’t have to drive too far for the attractions.

We were able to do contactless check-in by making the reservation and paying over the phone. When we arrived, they had a packet out on a picnic table for us with directions to our site and information about the park and the surrounding area. But, the best part of the check-in was that we got a free bundle of wood and the cutest little s’mores packet which had just enough fixings for the two of us. Such a great touch that we really appreciated. We had a gravel pull thru site which was easy to navigate in and out of with our tow car attached and was plenty long enough. The roads are gravel but were not dusty. The site and patio were gravel and a mix of grass. The campground was very clean and well-cared for.

Some of the sites are in the open without much shade but some other areas have some nice shade.  Most of the tent section is pretty open with a few trees scattered about.  Some of the sites (i.e., 82) is very close to the playground and the fishing pond which get quite a bit of action so be aware of the nearby amenities when you choose a site.

This park is well-suited for people traveling with horses. There are multiple pens and a fenced riding arena and ample RV sites and cabins in the near the horse stalls and there is a hose wash rack.

Some of the things we liked about this park:

    • There is a big section of the park dedicated to horses as the National Riding Stables are located on the grounds. You can get guided tours of the battlefield on their rescue horses.

    • A 24/7 firewood dispensing machine– which we had never seen before• Catch and release fishing pond• Free putt putt golf.

    • Heated swimming pool

    • Clean, well-kept campground• Lots of activities for kids with playgrounds, volleyball basketball, game room, camp store, movies, pool, etc.

We paid $44/night for our full hook-up site (#45) which we didn’t think was too expensive or unreasonable. Luckily for us, nobody was next to us during our stay (in May) as the neighboring sites were pretty close and this campground probably feels very tight when it’s full. The close proximity to Gettysburg NHS was the biggest plus of this park for us.

    Tuckahoe State Park Campground

A Gem of a State Park

We were looking to explore Maryland's Eastern Shore and picked Tuckaho because they had electric sites available. We were so pleased with our stay. The campground is well maintained and the sites are great. We have a small travel trailer and our site was pretty level and nicely private. We backed up to a hiking trail which was nice. There's lots to do here. There's a disc golf course and the camp store has discs available to use. We've never played before but had a blast learning, now we're hooked. We also enjoyed kayaking on the lake. If you enjoy birding this park is great, we saw so many cool birds. There's an arboretum and horse riding trails. We will definitely be going back!

    Tuckahoe State Park Campground

    Really nice to kayak

Tuckahoe State Park is tucked away onto the Eastern Shore of Maryland, close to the Chesapeake Bay. It features every kind of camping you can imagine. RVs, tents, youth group, etc. while I was only there for one chilly April night, my partner and I were looking forward to kayaking along the lake and creek. I was new to the sport and it was windy so the lake was a bit scary to kayak but the creek was perfect. With all the vegetation growing back, it felt like you were in Florida. There were interpretive signs all along the creek to teach about the birds, amphibians, and even beavers one might see. One of the downsides to the campground was that the bathrooms were small and far away from the campsites. That is, if we went to the right ones. Could have been user error.

    Lums Pond State Park Campground

Great place in the back yard

We do Lums Pond at least twice a year if we can get reservations.

Sites are big and all were redone in the last few years with concrete pads, 30 amp service and full sewer. There are some equestrian and tent sites as well.

Lots of boating (electric motors only) and kayaking on the pond and a decent amount of hiking. There’s an off leash dog park, equestrian center and boat ramp. Book early because it fills up fast!

    Artillery Ridge Campground

Camping as close to history as you can get

Spent a weekend at Gettysburg. We camped at Artillery Ridge Campground, which served as an artillery storage/staging area for the Union during the battle. Behind the campsite we stayed at, we learned connected to Stangler Farm, which served as a hospital for the wounded. Literally right outside the entrance of the campgrounds is where the battlefield starts. So close to history. We have been to Gettysburg before, but going with the kids again being older, we all had a greater appreciation of the sacrifice of this 3-day battle. We did Park Ranger tours to learn about the 1st shot and how the war started to stand in the footsteps of General Buford at Senitary Ridge in the cupola overseeing the battlefield. Later in the day we took a horse carriage ride through the battlefields, Picketts Charge and the peach orchard with a private guide to learn every ounce of the battlefield and the major players to learn about the 3 days of fighting that took place to how the civilians of Gettysburg were impacted. The three day battle claimed over 50,000 lives and we toured the town of Gettysburg to learn how the community had to deal with the aftermath of the masses who perished, the smell which went on for over 30 miles and limited resources such as clean water. It's amazing to see how history was so preserved but right across the street from battlefields where so many died stands fast food restaurants, and hotels. A little surreal. Would definitely recommend a ride out to Gettysburg and this campground, which is right next to the battlefields. Clean facilities. If you are into horses, this is the place for you! Though sites are not very private, everyone is very respectful, and you are not on top of each other. Quiet hours are observed, which is nice too. Store has a great variety of souviners, treats, and emergency camping items. You can't get any closer to history than here. Would definitely recommend if you are looking to visit Gettysburg.

    Artillery Ridge Campground

    Pretty much on the battlefield

We stayed at this campground during the COVID pandemic so not much was open at the campground. But from the looks of it they have a small mini golf area, nice size basketball court and a good size building for activities. This campground has horse stalls and rings if you would like to bring your own horses. There were a few families that brought their horses and they were right across from our site. Kids loved being able to see them and get close and even pet them!

This campground is minutes from town and is practically on the battlefield.

Nice catch and release pond in campground. Will definitely be returning.

    Lums Pond State Park Campground

Will be back again [when we can get a reservation]

I understand why it is so difficult to get a reservation at Lums Pond.  I don't know if it's the host campers or the management, but they're definitely doing something right.

I have to say, Jim, the host camper by us was fantastic.  As it was our first trip after a long winter, I managed to forget to put the anode back in our water heater.  I went over and sheepishly asked him if I could borrow a 1 1/2" socket.  He not only lent us a socket, but asked if I needed help, and if I had teflon tape (which I did) and was willing to lend a hand.

The site was fairly level, side-to-side, so I really only needed to level front to back.  That was a bonus.

Our daughter really enjoyed the playground (which was excellent, by my standards). The only complaint I have is that the kiddie swings seem to be modeled after the seasickness machine that they had on Mythbusters (https://archive.org/details/MythBusters..Season.3..480p576P..DVDripHDTV..X265HEVC..O69..FIXED/Mythbusters+-+S03E26+-+Seasickness+-+Kill+or+Cure.mkv).  I could only go on the swing with her for a little bit before I started to turn green.  Other than that?  She fought us about leaving the playground, and really would have been content if that was all we did.

I took her older cousins to  the fishing pier, and we didn't even get a nibble, but I think it was too cold for panfish that close to shore.

The trails were well marked, and the day we took a hike, we ended up on the equestrian trail that runs all the way around the pond.  It was a long, but easy hike.

The bath house was absolutely immaculate, and the design made even my public-bathroom-phobic sister-in-law comfortable and at ease.

All in all, it was a fantastic trip, and I hope to go back soon.

Guide to Towson

Artillery Ridge Campground sits near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, approximately 60 miles from Towson, Maryland. The campground connects directly to the historic Gettysburg battlefield, offering unique riding opportunities through Civil War sites. Most equestrian camping options near Towson require a drive of 45-90 minutes, with facilities ranging from basic paddocks to full-service horse amenities.

What to do

Battlefield horseback tours: At Artillery Ridge Campground, riders can explore historic grounds on guided tours. "You can take guided tours of the battlefield on horseback. Nice catch and release pond in campground," notes Zack in his review. The trails connect directly to significant Civil War sites.

Water activities: Lums Pond State Park Campground provides multiple water-based recreation options on its large pond. "Great state park with lots to do (kayaking, biking, and more)," writes Matt S. The park allows electric motors only, making it ideal for peaceful paddling approximately 70 miles from Towson.

Hiking network: For those who prefer exploring on foot, Tuckahoe State Park Campground offers extensive trail systems. "20 miles of hiking trails are also open for biking and horseback riding," explains Mary S. These multi-use paths accommodate various outdoor interests within 50 miles of Towson.

What campers like

Historical connections: Campers appreciate the proximity to significant Civil War sites. "Literally right outside the entrance of the campgrounds is where the battlefield starts. So close to history," shares MJ B. about their stay at Artillery Ridge, making it a top choice for history-focused equestrian camping near Towson.

Clean facilities: Gettysburg Campground receives consistent praise for its maintenance. "Really nice place. Recommend a site by the creek. Cool laid back staff and clean bathrooms nice playground for kids," says Brandon W. The campground maintains standards despite high visitor numbers.

Spacious sites: Campers value room to spread out. "Beautiful park setting with fantastic site—spacious, level, good-working hookups, and paved," notes Matt S. about Lums Pond State Park. The extra space allows for comfortable setups with horses and equipment when camping.

What you should know

Military base requirements: Andrews AFB Military FamCamp has specific access protocols. "Need military id and reservations to go," warns M.B. This limits availability for non-military personnel seeking equestrian camping options near Towson.

Reservation challenges: Popular campgrounds fill quickly. "Book early because it fills up fast!" advises Ellen B. about Lums Pond State Park. This applies especially during peak seasons and holiday weekends when equestrian sites are in highest demand.

Site variations: Not all sites offer equal amenities or space. "The sites are laid out in a circle with the bathhouse in the center," describes Jessica K. about Tuckahoe State Park. Research specific site numbers before booking, particularly when traveling with horses.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Families benefit from dedicated recreational areas. "The park has two playgrounds that are both open and trails to hike," explains Kasey M. about Tuckahoe State Park Campground, making it suitable for mixed groups where not everyone rides horses.

Educational opportunities: Camp Winery provides unique learning experiences. "Very beautiful spot, did some tent camping. Close to many cool things in the area too," shares Sammii D. The location serves as a base for exploring educational sites within 40 miles of Towson.

Activity variety: Look for campgrounds with diverse offerings. "Fun filled weekend of activities for the whole family. Close to historic Gettysburg battleground," reports Zack about Artillery Ridge. These programmed events supplement horseback riding activities.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for horse owners: Choose sites strategically when bringing horses. "If you go to Tuckahoe don't reserve site 21 unless you're tent camping!!!" cautions Buck P. after struggling to fit their 25' camper. Sites near equestrian facilities often have different dimensions and layouts.

Utility variations: RVers should verify specific hookup availability. "The sites are well maintained. The bathroom/showers are the cleanest I've ever seen," notes Bill G. about Tuckahoe State Park. Many campgrounds near Towson offer electric-only sites rather than full hookups for equestrian campers.

Seasonal considerations: Camping options change throughout the year. "In February, about 1/4 of the sites were occupied. It was very quiet," reports Adam and Suzanne B. about their winter stay at Lums Pond State Park. Off-season visits may offer more availability but potentially limited services for horse care.
