A Breathtaking Exerperience

Camping here for a week was incredible for many reasons. The gorgeous ponies and an abundance of wildlife were amazing. Being able to walk right over to the ocean was also amazing. What I wasn't expecting was the hordes of mosquitoes. Definitely be prepared with lots of Off and citronella candles. The last night I moved to the ocean side and it was much better. I went in June, so I'm not sure if they are always so bad. The bayside provides more interaction with the ponies and wildlife. Which can be worth the mosquitos. Just don't leave food in your tent. The first morning I woke up to a pony eating a loaf of bread and a huge hole in my tent.

Camping on the beach

There is only one campground in then Assateague park and it's right on the beach. Get ready to get sand everywhere. Be sure to check the forecast before you go because if it gets windy you'll be sure to feel it. I visited in later October and there were very few campers but I imagine the campground fills up in warmer months. The park is small to there are just a few one-way roads leading in and out.

The campground was two loops with drive-in sites as well as walk-in sites that are more removed from the road. There are also cold water showers to help with some of the aforementioned sand.

You'll surely see at least a few ponies on your visit as well as other great wildlife. If you have the time I highly recommend taking the drive over to the Chincoteague side (about an hour) and exploring there. I rented a bike from the Bike Depot and rode it into Chincoteague for a few hours.

Great coastal camping experience

Visited in late October on a last minute weekend trip. Had no issues finding a campsite upon arrival, luckily. The staff was super friendly and helpful in picking a site for us. We decided to stay ocean side and was just over the summer dune from the water. Lot had fire ring and table. Set up our tent in the flattest spot we could find. Neighbors next to us had five tents and seven people. There also were quite a few RVs that ran their generators long into the evening. We brought our dogs, and rangers said they were allowed at any campsites but told us where they were restricted. It was really awesome to be able to camp that close to the ocean. The quiet hours were pretty well followed, which allowed us to hear the Sika dear bugle late in the night. The showers and bathroom had much to be desired, but for being on the coast it was nice to have them. No sink near them but there was two faucets (one was locked off, not sure if the other). It got super windy over night, which caused issues to some of the campers at other sites. The check out time was pretty strictly checked up on. Overall we would love to go back and take our bikes to ride the trail. Neat experience and would completely recommend to others.

Up close and personal!

This campsite is like no other I’ve ever been to. If you don’t mind wild horses joining you for dinner and trekking around your campsite at night, then this is your place!! The beach is absolutely gorgeous and so is the scenery. If a crowded beach is not your thing, it gets less crowded as you walk away from the boardwalk. Please be kind to the horses and if you see an injured one, let the Park Rangers know immediately.

Better in the spring and fall

If you want to camp in the spring or fall, camp on the bayside. There will be less mosquitoes that time of year but the wind from the ocean isn’t as intense as on the Oceanside so it’s a bit warmer. Prepare for some gorgeous sunsets and sunrises. The facilities are simple but fine. The showers are turned off during offseason but you can still use the spring outside. Ponies are a bit more calm on this side.

Dreamy camping

It’s hidden away yet close to the water. Having animals around is such a great feeling. A deer hung out by the campfire at night, and in the morning there were horse tracks all over the sight. We chose to stay in October with less people and less bugs. Hiking and boys nearby to kayak or canoe at. Beautiful place to stay.

Mosquitos!

This is more primitive being a National Park, but that doesn't bother me much. In the summer, the mosquitos are especially bad bayside... stick with the seaside or State Park. If you require better bathroom facilities, go to the State Park. You will see the horses roam through the area and possibly block your access to the bathroom! It is nice to be closer to the bayside beach and boat access. You can play in the shallow, calmer water there!

Ocean side is the best!

I love camping at Assateague Campground (Oceanside). The mosquitoes are very bad but it is the most relaxing thing to fall asleep listening to the ocean....make sure your tent spikes and tent are strong enough for storms because it can get very windy... if it’s hurricane season they will ask everyone to leave during a bad storm but that’s never happened to me... the campsite beaches do not have lifeguards but it’s a short walk to the lifeguard beach if you want it. The horses will destroy your tent if you leave food or sweet drinks in it... they have a great sense of smell and will knock down coolers and entire tents if they think there’s food. Leave all food secure in a vehicle if you aren’t at your site. They have little pricker things in the grassy areas that stick to everything! But none of this could make me say it’s bad I absolutely love the Oceanside of Assateague campgrounds! If you need to get horses to leave you can splash them with bottled water or shake a tin with change in it but stay away they can be aggressive..

Beautiful but buggy

Bayside is typically the better choice but the Oceanside gives you access to the beach in minutes. Horses can be a nuisance and destroy your campsite but are beautiful to watch. The bayside is great if you have a kayak and some sites you can launch directly into the bay. The Oceanside can be painfully hot, very little breeze behind the dunes and the bathrooms are awful. Would recommend staying at the state park instead.

My family of 5 stayed 2 nights. Showers (cold) toilets were well maintained, fire rings provided and nicely kept grounds with observed quiet times made for a fantastic stay!! The beaches were amazing and crabbing fun!! Bugs were EPICALLY BAD!! Never experienced anything like it..greenies would bite thru shirts and draw blood..2 cans of 40% deet barely helped and the poor dogs got all bit up..watch the weather for storms 2 weeks before you visit..they cause a mass hatch..

Great Fall Spot

As other reviewers have mentioned, this campground has more vegetation than its Seaside counterpart. This does lend itself to less of a breeze and more flying insects than you might find on the beach, which makes it a perfect spot in the colder fall and winter months. We stayed here when the low was around 17 degrees so we appreciated the natural protection.

We did have several interactions with one wild horse who did not seem to be bothered by us or our dog. The dog on the other hand was certainly bothered! Between the horse and the sand spurs in his feet he would probably rate this spot a lot lower.

While I wouldn't recommend staying here in the warmer and buggier months, it is a nice alternative in the should seasons when more protection may be warranted.

Bayside Camping

This campground was for the most part a great experience. We enjoyed bike riding around the island, catching glimpses of the wild ponies and running around on the beach. Right next to the bike rental area was a perfect spot for the kids to play in calmer water. Although mosquitoes and ticks are in abundance between May and November, as expected, this campground had an unusual amount compared to other campgrounds. If you want to avoid the swarm of ticks and mosquitoes, I advise to get a tent site on ocean side away from dense vegetation. Just a warning if you’re looking to come here for the summer that these sites (especially ocean side) go quickly and must be booked MONTHS in advance.

Bayside - Assategue National Park.

For hardcore campers!! I accidentally booked the bayside campsite vs the seaside campsite and we had a very tough time. We have been camping here on and off for the past 10 years on the Seaside and it is one of my favorite beach camp sites but stay away from the bayside campsite on the bayside.

The biggest problem for us was there was absolutely no breeze or wind on the bayside, The camping spots are in a wooded area so you do get plenty of shade but the trees block any wind blowing in from the ocean. No breeze or wind means dealing with tons of flying biting insects...constantly. And I mean lots and lots of horse flies.

And for some reason I think the wild horses are more active and more aggressive on the bayside vs when camping on the beach, just my personal experience. Our camp was raided every every night and day, even when we had horse proofed all our food and our campsite. I ended up storing all our food in our tents inside lockable bins.

Most of the people I saw camping on the bayside had RV, which is the only way I would come back to the bayside.

Read my other review for seaside assategue camping for some helpful tips.
