Rockin' K Horse Campground at Kanopolis State Park sits at approximately 1,500 feet elevation in the Smoky Hills region of central Kansas. The campground connects directly to over 25 miles of equestrian trails that wind through Dakota sandstone formations and native prairie landscapes. Winter camping remains available at Rockin' K, though water services are typically shut off from November through March when temperatures regularly drop below freezing.
What to do
Trail riding excursions: Equestrian trails at Rockin' K Horse Campground offer varied terrain suitable for riders of all skill levels. "I camped there in early October and this campground appeared to have multiple spots for campers with horses. There were numerous horse pens along with some dispersed camping area. There looked to be a trail for horse riding nearby," notes Caleb J.
Paddle sports on Kanopolis Lake: Campers can access the lake within a short drive. "My girlfriend and I were able to take our paddle boards out which was a ton of fun and with the heavy boat traffic," shares Nick P. from Sandyshore Campground.
Rock climbing and cave exploration: The limestone formations throughout Kanopolis State Park provide natural climbing opportunities. "We loved the hiking through limestone. We found couple caves and climbed some rock. Would be good for mntn biking," reports Carter W.
What campers like
Hot shower facilities: The shower house at Rockin' K is frequently cited as a standout amenity. "We stayed at Eagle Point as we don not have horses but this campground had the shower house that we used which was very clean and the water was actually hot! Very well maintained!" says Alex R.
Spacious campsite layout: Sites are designed with ample room between neighbors. "Spots were well spaced and organized. Some had water/electric with others being just electric. Great system for checking in after hours without a reservation," notes Charles from Rockin' K Horse Campground.
Lake access and views: Many campsites offer direct lake views and shoreline proximity. "Perfect mix of shade and shoreline. Beautiful views," mentions Elizabeth S. about her experience at Sandyshore.
What you should know
Primitive camping considerations: Not all campgrounds in the area offer full amenities. At Mulberry Campground, "Primitive campground is well maintained and largely unoccupied because of the lack of hookups for RVs... Close to swimming beach, but bring your own water as there is no spigot nearby," advises Katie L.
Seasonal variations: Some campgrounds experience significant seasonal fluctuations in occupancy. In early October at Rockin' K, Caleb J. noted "There was only one other camper at the campground when we went."
Wildlife encounters: Ticks can be problematic during warmer months. Nick P. warns, "bring tick spray can be brutal out there!"
Tips for camping with families
Beach activities: The reservoir provides swimming opportunities at designated areas. "We got a perfect camp spot all to ourselves. It was not necessarily private or in the woods. But we were right up against the lake. There was sand like a beach," describes Carter W. from Sandyshore Campground.
Fishing opportunities: Kanopolis Lake and nearby Glen Elder State Park offer excellent fishing. At Cheyenne Campground, Laura D. confirms it's a "Good lake to fish and camp. Well taken care of. I enjoyed my stay."
Quiet camping options: For families seeking less crowded spaces, consider weekday visits. "Stayed on 4th of July and only one other family was in the entire campground," reports Katie L. about Mulberry Campground.
Tips from RVers
Full hookup availability: Several equestrian campgrounds near Sylvan Grove offer comprehensive RV services. At Rockin' K, Charles observed, "Spots were well spaced and organized. Some had water/electric with others being just electric."
Accessibility information: Large rigs can be accommodated at select campgrounds. Cheyenne Campground at Glen Elder State Park is rated as big-rig friendly and offers both 30 and 50-amp electric hookups as well as sewer connections.
Campground improvements: Some areas have seen recent upgrades. About Cheyenne Campground, Brandy notes, "I grew up here, stopped going when it became a party haven filled with drama, recently gave it a second chance and could not be happier I did so. It has really been cleaned up in all aspects."
