What to do
Trail riding with direct access: At Rockhaven Park Equestrian Campground, riders can access multiple trails directly from the campground. "There is a playground, picnic shelter, two designated manure piles, and access to horse-friendly and dog-friendly trails right in the campground!" notes Juliana H.
Hiking through varied terrain: Weston Bend State Park offers trail systems with different difficulty levels. "Weston Bend State Park has an amazing hiking trail system within the park! Even one paved trail!" writes Danielle H., highlighting accessibility options for different skill levels.
Kayaking on calm waters: Smith's Fork Recreation Area connects to Smithville Lake, providing water recreation opportunities. "Close to Kansas City so it makes a great quick getaway. Clean, friendly, and right next to Smithville Lake," explains Lawrence W., making it suitable for paddling enthusiasts.
What campers like
Clean facilities: Watkins Mill State Park maintains high standards of cleanliness. "These are the cleanest bathrooms and facilities that I have been to I think Mabye ever. The camp hosts were super nice stop by to make sure that I was all set up and didn't need any help," shares Lauri J.
Equestrian-focused amenities: Horse owners appreciate the specialized setup at Rockhaven. "There are plenty of areas to tie off and/or enclose horses," notes Juliana H., describing the practical horse management facilities available.
Privacy options: Some sites at Weston Bend State Park offer more seclusion than others. "While some of the other sites were very close to each other, this one is relatively isolated. It's big too," reports Barbie G. about site 26, one of the park's basic sites.
What you should know
Seasonal limitations: Water systems at Crow's Creek Campground may shut down during cold weather. "Due to unseasonably cold weather they shut off water with no notice and halfway through our stay. Ended up leaving early since we had no water and also no sewer at site," warns Bridget U.
Varying site conditions: Not all sites are level or shaded equally. "I can't say enough good things about this campground. Nice stay!! We will be back," says Lauri C. about Watkins Mill State Park, while others note site variability.
Reservation requirements: At peak times, especially for equestrian sites, advance booking is essential. "The camp hosts were very polite. We had a short walk to the lake for fishing, and the loop had a restroom," reports Nikki S. about Camp Branch Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Lake Jacomo - Fleming Park offers recreational facilities for children. "The roads and trails are nice for scooters and bikes. Fairly close to the water and playground; within walking distance," notes Brittnie T. from a nearby campground.
Private bathroom options: Some campgrounds offer individual bathroom facilities. "The bathrooms are the nicest campground bathrooms I've ever used - large, clean, and not communal, so you get a sink, toilet, and shower all to yourself," explains Fawn W. about Lake Jacomo - Fleming Park.
Off-season timing: For a quieter family experience at horse campgrounds near Lake Quivira, consider non-peak times. "We love it when it is still kind of off season like Easter weekend and after labor day. We have small children and it can get pretty rowdy during the summer," advises Robin R.
Tips from RVers
Leveling needs: Smith's Fork Recreation Area provides full hookups with both 30 and 50 amp options. "Of everywhere Smith's Fork is the only one (so far) that offers Electric (30 & 50 amp), Water (2) and Sewer at every campsite. At just $30 per day it is a steal!" reports Don M.
Optimal site selection: RV sites with shade can be limited at some campgrounds. "These RV spots have great shade, are spaced nicely apart, and are a quick walk to the lake! Amazing sunsets!" says Steven N. about Smith's Fork Recreation Area.
Hookup variations: Check specific campground amenities before arriving. "Full hookup sites don't have a view of the lake. This is why we chose an electric only site and used a spigot in the campsite to fill our tank," shares Julie B. about choosing between convenience and scenery.
