What to do
Hiking trails: Kanopolis State Park features multiple hiking trails through limestone formations. At Sandyshore Campground, visitors can access paths with interesting geological features. "We loved the hiking through limestone. We found a couple caves and climbed some rock. Would be good for mntn biking," notes Carter W.
Paddleboarding: The reservoir provides excellent opportunities for water recreation. "My girlfriend and I were able to take our paddle boards out which was a ton of fun and with the heavy boat traffic," shares Nick P. from Sandyshore Campground.
Horseback riding: The bridle trails near Rockin' K Horse Campground offer direct access for equestrians. Campers note the campground "appeared to have multiple spots for campers with horses" and "There looked to be a trail for horse riding nearby," according to Caleb J.
What campers like
Clean facilities: The shower houses receive consistent praise from visitors to horse campgrounds near Hoisington, Kansas. "We stayed at Eagle Point as we don not have horses but this campground had the shower house that we used which was very clean and the water was actually hot! Very well maintained!" reports Alex R. about Rockin' K Horse Campground.
Waterfront views: Many sites at Mulberry Campground and other Kanopolis areas offer lake views. "Gorgeous view and perfect shaded camping grounds," says Jennifer H. about her experience at Sandyshore.
Privacy during off-peak times: Primitive camping areas see lower traffic, especially during weekdays or shoulder seasons. Katie L. notes about Mulberry Campground: "Primitive campground is well maintained and largely unoccupied because of the lack of hookups for RVs. Stayed on 4th of July and only one other family was in the entire campground."
What you should know
Limited facilities at primitive sites: Mulberry Campground lacks some basic amenities. "Close to swimming beach, but bring your own water as there is no spigot nearby," warns Katie L.
Wildlife considerations: Ticks can be problematic in this region, particularly during warmer months. "We ended up leaving because we found several tics and were worried about our dogs," reports Hunter about their stay at Sandyshore.
Campsite selection timing: For non-reservable areas, arriving early is crucial. "Wish they would make these spots reservable as they fill up very quick since they are first come first serve. Especially on weekends," advises Elizabeth S. about certain areas of Hayland Farm's Horse Shoe Campground.
Tips for camping with families
Consider proximity to facilities: When camping with children, note the distance to restrooms and showers. "The closest restroom is 1/2 a mile away up in Buzzard Bay though. For how popular this spot is, they need to build one closer to the campground," Elizabeth S. points out about certain areas of Sandyshore.
Swimming options: The reservoir offers swimming opportunities during summer months. "We went for the weekend, mostly to do some hiking. Then realized we had found one of the nest places in Kansas! We got a perfect camp spot all to ourselves... There was sand like a beach the water was alright," shares Carter W.
Local hospitality: Some private campgrounds near Hoisington offer family-friendly environments. William S. describes the owners of Hayland Farm's: "Tom and Heddy are very nice folks. Warm and welcoming. Their property is quiet and beautiful."
Tips from RVers
Site spacing: Equestrian campgrounds typically offer more room for larger rigs. Charles notes about Rockin' K: "Spots were well spaced and organized. Some had water/electric with others being just electric."
After-hours check-in: For late arrivals, some campgrounds offer self-registration. "Great system for checking in after hours without a reservation," reports Charles about the process at Rockin' K Horse Campground.
Campsite amenities: Many sites at Kanopolis State Park include both electric and water hookups. Henry M. from Sandyshore Campground explains, "My wife and I camped in site 093 and really enjoyed the scenery of the lake and the park itself. Great place for a weekend getaway or long fishing trip on the reservoir."
