What to do
Trail riding at Weinberg-King State Park: Visitors can access multiple trails for horseback riding through varied terrain. "This park is very clean and well maintained. There is a lot to do from hunting, fishing, hiking, and more. There are usually a lot of horse back riders on the hiking trails," shares Jacob R. about Weinberg-King State Fish and Wildlife Area.
Fishing at Indian Lake Park: The park offers multiple fishing opportunities with a clean lake stocked with various species. "This park has something for everyone. They have primitive tent sites, electric only, electric+water, and fhu. They also have cabins for rent. All very reasonably priced. Hiking, fishing, swimming, kayaking, bird watching. There are many things to keep you busy here," notes Dave N. about Indian Lake Park.
Explore historic Bentonsport: Walk the historic bridge and visit local craft shops within walking distance of the campground. "Down the road from the sleepy little town of Bentonsport, IA is this small riverfront campground. The view of the Des Moines River and the Bentonsport Bridge was beautiful, and it is an easy and short walk into town," explains Lee D. about Bentonsport.
What campers like

Campgrounds also include a shooting range, beach, equestrian trails, canoe rentals, and launch," reports Travis R. about Big Hollow Recreation Area.
Clean facilities: Many campgrounds maintain clean grounds and bathhouses. "Very nice park and not to near a train. Very modern facilities that were clean," notes Charles A. about Indian Lake Park.
Quiet atmosphere: Several campsites offer peaceful surroundings away from highways and urban noise. "Camped here for a family reunion. Open sites near the Des Moines river and local road meant spots were just for sleeping. Excellent barns, accommodations, well-kept grounds and animals. What you should know
Seasonal availability: Most equestrian campgrounds are open April through October, with limited winter services.
Reservation requirements: During peak seasons, particularly weekends from May through September, advance reservations are strongly recommended for equestrian sites.
Facility variations: Bathroom facilities range from modern to primitive depending on the campground. "The non-equestrian loop was not as nice.
