Horse camping opportunities near Donnellson, Iowa extend beyond Shimek State Forest with several additional equestrian facilities within driving distance. The region features rolling hills and oak-hickory forests typical of southern Iowa terrain at elevations ranging from 550-700 feet. Fall temperatures average 45-65°F, making it a popular season for trail riding when conditions are typically drier than spring.
What to do
Trail riding beyond Shimek: Big Hollow Recreation Area offers equestrian trails with varied terrain. "This site has a large number of mostly cement camper spots, including pull through. There is a large playground and shower house. Primitive camping for single or group spots. Campgrounds also include a shooting range, beach, equestrian trails, canoe rentals, and launch," notes Travis R.
Fishing excursions: Indian Lake Park provides water recreation alongside horse camping. "This park has something for everyone. They have primitive tent sites, electric only, electric+water, and fhu. They also have cabins for rent. All very reasonably priced. There is a playground, a few nice hiking trails, and a lake with a nice sandy beach," explains Dave N.
Historical exploration: Visit nearby Bentonsport's historic district when taking a break from riding. "Beautiful river views. Amazing camp hosts. Showers,toilets,30/50/110 power water on sites to share water and dump on property. Mid 1800's town right there and businesses open. There is a blacksmith, a Indian artifact museum and gift shops. Historical walking bridge that is amazing," shares Greg K.
What campers like
Camp host hospitality: River Valley Horsecamp receives praise for its attentive staff. "Camped here for a family reunion. Open sites near the Des Moines river and local road meant spots were just for sleeping. Excellent barns, accommodations, well-kept grounds and animals. Nearby locals kind and welcoming," writes Lesley R.
Trail maintenance: Lick Creek Unit's Upper Equestrian Campground earns high marks for trail quality. "We had a wonderful time camping and riding the trails," notes Dorothy H., while Kyle D. adds, "Good sights, great horse trails, awesome camping."
Affordable options: Lake Showme Campsites offers economical alternatives for equestrian campers. "Great spot, $20 for RVs and campers. Free if primitive camping. All spots have power and water. Waste and sewage dump can be found on campgrounds. One showering station on grounds. Bathrooms within walking distance," reports Chunk S.
What you should know
Limited facilities: Some equestrian campgrounds lack amenities common at standard campgrounds. Waubonsie Trail Park offers basic accommodations: "I camped in the equestrian campground and loved it with my popup. Outhouse type toilets are available there. I only drove past the RV campground and the campsites were close together. The equestrian area is the way to go in my opinion but i love the quiet," explains Joyce M.
Seasonal considerations: Many equestrian trails become muddy after rain, particularly in spring. Plan accordingly and check trail conditions before arrival.
Reservation requirements: Most horse campgrounds require advance booking during peak riding seasons (May-October). Some sites accept same-day arrivals on weekdays if space permits.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Choose campgrounds with kid-friendly facilities. "There is a playground, a few nice hiking trails, and a lake with a nice sandy beach. Almost empty during the week, but very busy on summer weekends. Hiking, fishing, swimming, kayaking, bird watching. There are many things to keep you busy here," recommends Dave N. about Indian Lake Park.
Safety precautions: Keep children at safe distances from horses not in their family's care. Bring helmets for young riders.
Educational opportunities: Several campgrounds offer nature programs on weekends during summer months.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: At Rodeo Park, "I stayed at the RV section right next to the rodeo arena. Full hookups for only $20 per night with a self-service registration box. I forgot to count but looked like maybe 20 spots max. I was here mid-November in town for work and there was no more than four other campers at any point," shares Sam H.
Water and electric details: Verify hookup locations before setup as some sites have shared water connections.
Rig size limitations: Many equestrian campgrounds accommodate larger rigs with horse trailers but have limited turning radius. Arrive during daylight hours for easier navigation.
