    Kentuckiana Campground

Great for families or just a quiet getaway!

We stayed here last year and will likely stay there again this year when we are back in Illinois. The park has two sides, one side closer to the stage. We haven’t been there when they have shows, so I can’t speak to what that is like. When we were there it was lovely. There is plenty of shade, sites are large enough for our Class A and they are pet friendly.

The Double J Campground and RV Park

    Beautiful place!

Beautiful place! We called ahead to see if they had sites available for the next two nights. Arrived just before the office closed at 5:45pm. The campground area past the office is electronically gated and registrants receive a scannable card for entry. Once we had scanned and entered through the gate they escorted us to our pull-through full-hookups site. The campsites are nice and wide, gravel like the roads, with wide grassy areas between and beautiful mature shade trees everywhere. Our site had a picnic table and a small fire ring. Full hookups worked fine.

The campground is next to a large corn field that has recently been cut; I suspect during the growing/harvest season there may be dust and noise from equipment, and perhaps overspray from any chemicals that are dusted on it. This time of year it was nice and quiet. The noise from the highway bordering both cornfield and campground, however, was loud and constant.

Bathrooms were clean and aerated by large fans which were loud but effective.

We would definitely stay here again.

Lincolns New Salem Historic Site Campground

    Great area

We loved this campground. Was all paved sites and roads. Pretty level sites. Utilities harder to get to but all in all a great family campground. Pet friendly. Not 5 stars since we had to leave a day early due to weather. Not their fault but sites became a lake and couldn’t even step outside. Barely any AT&T service. Couldn’t use phone as hotspot at all.

    Springfield KOA

    Very quiet

This KOA is in a rural area. The signage to get there was very good, plus we had our GPS to help out. This area is QUIET! No trains, no interstate noise. It was great after a long day traveling. Bathrooms/showers are very clean& decorated nicely. Staff was courteous. Our site was fine. This KOA has many family activities, including a pool, mini golf, jumping pillow& a huge field for the kids to play. Cell service was fine.

Only bad thing- While checking in, the lady told me we couldn't use our sewer. She said the whole row was backing up. Since the dump station was also in this line, we couldn't dump. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but I talked my husband out of dumping when we left the state park we were at because we were going to a KOA with a full hookup site! We camped at Springfield KOA Journey in a Travel Trailer.

Primitive Campground — Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area

State Park away from busier Illinois

https://camp.exploremoreil.com/ 84 electric RV sites all reservable except 21 First Come sites. 18 sites are full hookup. Several 50 amp sites but majority are 30 amp. Modern Shower house and 7 Vault toilet buildings. Newer Campground so Shade Trees are smaller still. Have camped here 4 times past 3 years. Like the quite agricultural Illinois environment but suggest shopping for your needs prior to leaving larger cities as most of the few small towns are limited to a Bar and Dollar store.

    Kentuckiana Campground

    Nice campground

Spaces are tight. Most are pull-though but there isn’t a lot of room between campers so don’t expect much privacy. Grounds are very well kept and they have two nice ponds stocked with fish. Because of COVID, the opry house wasn’t open, the camper store took appointments only, and playground was closed—but that playground looked fantastic! Shower houses were small but clean. Full hookups on most sites from what we could see. There are a LOT of long-term campers there.

    Sangchris Lake State Park Campground

    5 stars with a caveat

This is a beautiful state park, but hopefully you won’t have the same experience I did with the electric hookup. I stayed here right after the fourth of July and because of the heat over this holiday weekend and a completely full campground, the electricity couldn’t meet the demand and a transformer blew. By the time I arrived the transformer was repaired, however the pedestals in the section I was supposed to stay in had a problem. I was supposed to stay in site 27, but after 3 attempts to get power at 3 different sites, number 24 was the winner and this was a great site! The campground hosts were fantastic in resolving the situation as well.

Site 24 is huge and level with a picnic table and fire ring. Electric but no water at site. The site is totally private on one side because of a lake inlet and there’s a large back area right on the lake. The gravel pad is located right near a large, old bald cypress.

This park has multiple public use areas, 2 campgrounds, boat launches, fishing piers and a beach. I didn’t use the public restrooms because they were closed due to Covid-19. I was able to get internet with Verizon.

This state park felt like it was dropped into the middle of cornfields and made for a fun drive. The sunset views and stars were awesome!

    Springfield KOA

    Spacious Green Grounds

Springfield KOA is actually in Rochester, but it is only about 25 mins into Springfield and all the wonderful Lincoln historic sites. The campground is very nice, a lot of amenities for families like pool, little bikes, miniature golf and horseshoes. Shop has laundry, ice and oropane, there's free wifi. Sites have power and water, you have to go to dump station on the way out as there aren't individual sewers. But there is grass, picnic table and fire ring at every site, trees all around.

The Double J Campground and RV Park

    Super well maintained gtounds

Honestly amazed by how clean and well maintained this campground is. River rock driveways (not gravel) and sites- well packed down and regularly grated. Their friendly staff leads you back to your site on a golf cart and is regularly driving around with firewood. It's a surprisingly big campground, big rig friendly and a lot of cute amenities. Only downside is the noise of the interstate but honestly it was fine. We only stayed a couple nights and were really close to the road but there are certainly spots deeper in the grounds that probably aren't as loud.

Be prepared for stink bugs galore though.

Hiking trails: Explore the unique ecosystem at Sand Ridge State Forest with several marked trails. "The orange trail (5 mile loop) starts at the campground making it easy to access the trail to check out the sandy forest and prickly pear cactus," explains a camper who found the hiking challenging but rewarding.

What campers like

Peaceful environment: Many campers appreciate the quiet atmosphere at the Illinois State Fair Campground. "This area is QUIET! No trains, no interstate noise. It was great after a long day traveling," notes a visitor who enjoyed the break from urban noise.

What you should know

Reservation timing: For popular campgrounds, especially during summer, plan well ahead. "If you want a lake spot, make a reservation way in advance," advises a regular visitor to Sangchris Lake State Park who returns frequently for the lake access.

Cellular connectivity: Internet access varies significantly between parks. A camper at Springfield KOA reported "Cell service was fine," while others noted limited service at Lincoln's New Salem, particularly for AT&T users.

Educational opportunities: Plan time for the historic sites. A family visiting Primitive Campground shared: "I went with a church group. This campground seemed well laid out and was affordable. It also felt like a safe environment for the family."

Water activities: For summer visits, look for campgrounds with water recreation. "They offer kayaks, canoes, and peddle boats free to campers. There is an open cabin with games, books, and WiFi. Basketball court, play area, and outdoor games," explains a visitor to Buena Vista Farms who enjoyed the family-friendly amenities.

Tips from RVers

Site selection: At Petersburg RV parks, choose your location based on shade preferences. "The sites are all on pavement, parking lot style," explains a visitor to Illinois State Fair Campground, while another notes "You have the option of paved parking lot or on the grass. We chose the grass for the shade trees."

Hookup access: Check specifics about hookup placement before arrival. "Double J Campground in Chatham offers full-hookup RV sites with good 50-amp service and pull-through access," notes a frequent RVer.

Dump station knowledge: Plan your tank usage around available facilities. "The dump station does not have hose hook up for water. There is water but you can't hook a hose to it. That needs to be fixed as you cant wash down your spills or rinse your tank," advises an RVer at Springfield KOA who encountered challenges.
