Camping options near Colona, Illinois span across fertile farmland at around 600 feet elevation along the Hennepin Canal and Rock River watersheds. The area's midwestern climate features warm, humid summers with temperatures averaging 85°F from June through August and cold winters that drop below freezing from December through February. Many campgrounds in this region operate seasonally from April through October, though some premium locations offer year-round accommodations.
What to do
Bike the canal trail: Access 72 miles of paved trails from Hickory Grove Campground where the Hennepin Canal path connects directly to campsites. "Great bike path right out of campsite along the canal. Nice to get some exercise on a long road trip," notes Maureen F.
Fishing opportunities: Cast for multiple species at Rock Creek County Marina. "Nice educational center with canoe and kayak rentals, with lots of Mississippi backwater to explore," reports Jeff and Linda L. The backwaters provide habitat for bluegill, catfish, bass and crappie.
Visit historic sites: Explore the Walnut Grove Pioneer Village located within Scott County Park near the Iowa border. "Park offers Pride Lake for paddling and fishing, trails for hike/bike/horse, pool with concessions, golf course, historical Pioneer Village, and trails with wildlife!" explains James M.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Wilderness Campground at Scott County Park offers secluded wooded spots. "Unlike either nearby Woodside or Bald Eagle campgrounds, which are more geared for the RV driving and 5th Wheel hauling camping community, Wilderness CG isn't very level, has decent natural barriers like tree roots, forest boundaries like thick brush and space constraints," reports Stuart K.
Clean facilities: Morrison-Rockwood State Park maintains exceptional restrooms. "The (and I cannot emphasize this enough) CLEANEST campground bathrooms I've ever seen! I'm not squeamish and have been camping for years so my expectations for campground bathroom cleanliness is well calibrated but these bathrooms (even the vault toilets!) were amazingly clean!" writes Stacie H.
Family-friendly atmosphere: Geneseo Campground provides activities for children. "Great place to camp! Right on the Hennepin Canal. RV, tent, Cabins, and Yurt camping. The couple that run this campsite are so sweet! Pedal bikes for kids (and grown ups), a spray ground, and more!" shares Elizabeth R.
What you should know
Seasonal considerations: Most campgrounds in the area close during winter months. "Seasonal cg has good shade in forested areas with fire rings, tables, durable roads. Seasonal host with firewood, rr/showers," explains James M. about Wilderness Campground.
Shower availability: Camelot Campground Quad Cities USA (formerly Rock Island KOA) features modern shower facilities. "Clean bathrooms & showers. We didn't use the pool, but it looked nice. Easy on/off the interstate," reports Cynthia K.
Tent camping options: Several campgrounds offer dedicated tent areas separate from RVs. "The tent sites are nicely tucked away from the RVs, with a row of bushes to separate you from your neighbor. Nice shade," mentions Jackie S. at Geneseo Campground.
Site leveling: Terrain varies significantly between campgrounds. "Our site was huge, flat and private - no trouble finding flat ground to pitch the tent," notes Amy R. about Morrison-Rockwood State Park, while other locations require equipment for leveling.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Choose sites near recreation areas. "We had site 57 which is in a loop which goes around a playground. It was great for the kids who could go play and the sites in this loop provide plenty of space and privacy," recommends Ben W. at Morrison-Rockwood State Park.
Educational opportunities: Visit the Eco Tourism Center at Rock Creek. "Great educational center with canoe and kayak rentals, with lots of Mississippi backwater to explore. Showers are open until October 14 this year," advises Jeff and Linda L.
Dedicated youth activities: Some locations offer structured programs. "This campground has an assortment of primitive and electrical sites. They also have cabins and canoe/kayak rental, a visitor shop with food/drink and a mini museum of the local wildlife. Great place for the family," notes Ryan about Rock Creek County Marina.
Tips from RVers

Interstate access: Camelot Campground offers convenient highway access. "This was a great one night stay. We were in site #5 FHU. Easy and friendly check in. Nice lake in park. It was still off season so pool etc was not open. Easy on/off interstate," explains Rachel G.
Site spacing: Hickory Grove Campground provides ample room between RVs. "Sites were huge and not crammed into one another. They even allowed us to use their golf cart to ck out the creek. Definitely recommend and would go back," reports Roxanna L.
