Winchester Lake State Park Campground offers camping in a forested setting 25 miles south of Moscow, Idaho at an elevation of 3,900 feet. The park features 46 water and electric sites and 22 standard sites around a 103-acre lake stocked with various fish species. Most sites are wooded and private, with temperatures typically 10-15 degrees cooler than surrounding valley areas due to the elevation and forest cover.
What to do
Fishing from shore or small watercraft: Winchester Lake State Park is stocked with diverse fish species. "Lots of fishing we caught: blue gill, trout, bass, crappie, perch, cat fish and had a small Tiger Muskie on the line but lost it," reports one visitor to Winchester Lake State Park Campground.
Kayaking on calm waters: The lakes near Viola prohibit motorized watercraft, creating ideal conditions for paddling. "The lake is perfect for kayaking and fishing," notes a camper at Winchester Lake State Park. At Chief Timothy Park, visitors appreciate "access to water from our campsite. That is always a bonus."
Hiking through pine forests: Trail systems connect campsites to waterfront areas. A camper at Laird Park Campground mentioned, "Sweet little nature trails were pretty and easy for smaller children to walk through." The trails often feature berry bushes and wildlife viewing opportunities.
Swimming at designated beaches: While not all lakes are ideal for swimming, designated areas exist. "The park is VERY parklike with some trees, but overall there is little privacy on the loops. You are right on the Snake River (minimal view) and close to Lewiston, ID," mentions a visitor to Hells Gate State Park Campground.
What campers like
Cooler temperatures: The higher elevation glamping close to Viola provides relief during summer heat. "Our site was tucked into the pines creating a canopy of coolness in the midst of the oppressing heat of this record breaking year," shares a camper at Winchester Lake State Park.
Night sky viewing: The area's distance from major cities creates excellent stargazing conditions. "Great area for cloud watching and stargazing, but sunset was my fav price part of this location," notes a visitor at Chatcolet Campground.
Peaceful atmosphere: Many campers mention the quiet environment. "Amidst the rolling hills of farmland and open spaces emerges this deeply forested reservoir. Wonderful fishing, trout, bass, catfish, and even tiger musky," describes a camper at Winchester Lake State Park.
Wildlife encounters: The forested settings attract diverse wildlife. "Lots of wildlife viewing too! If you are lucky you may see a black bear feeding on blackberries, deer are numerous, elk frequent the lake, and one of my favorites is to watch Osprey dive in the lake for fish," shares a visitor to Freeman Creek Campground.
What you should know
Seasonal operations: Many campgrounds near Viola operate seasonally. Laird Park Campground is open only from May to September, closing during winter months when snow makes access difficult.
Limited connectivity: Cell service varies significantly between campgrounds. "NO CELL SERVICE. You just have to be present with one another," reports a Winchester Lake camper. This can be either a benefit or challenge depending on your needs.
