      Fantastic Layover

I was so happy to find this place when looking for a place to stay overnight with my horse. The facility has a perimeter gate as well as gates to each pasture (2). The fencing was nice metal panels between sturdy posts. There was Hotwire strung on the inside of the pasture in places to keep horses off the Arbor Vitae trees. Grass was mowed short and my horse could see another horse all night. He had a big water trough to drink from. The hosts checked on him and sent me updates through the evening while I was in town. I recommended them to others I met on my ride through the Lolo area. I was very impressed and happy with the experience.

      Tucannon Campground

      Dry and packed!

Very dry with little tree coverage. Loads of people and every campsite was full. Lakes are great for fishing with kiddos. Cannot ride dirtbikes or 4 wheelers in the campsite or on the road unless street legal. If you go up higher towards the horse corrals it isn't as dry and tends to be less crowded.

      Hells Gate State Park Campground

Hells Gate is anything but Hell

PROS: *The campground is very shady which is great when it's 102 degrees (record breaking year). *The sites are pretty level and easy in and out.
*They irrigate so there is lush grass everywhere. *Lots of biking in park and nearby along the riverfront. *Very nice Lewis and Clark Discovery Center *Aspen and Birch Loops DO have RV hookups. Cottonwood Loop does not. *Access to the Snake River, with marina close by *Disc golf course *Close to town

CONS: *NO early checkin. 2:00 is it. They say they need the time to water and clean. They were nice about it. *Bathhouses are DESPERATELY in need of updating and the one in Cottonwood Loop mens room smelled of urine. *Can't really see the river from the campground

It was very smoky when we were there due to fires across the river in Oregon, so we cut our visit short. We will return when air quality returns though.

      Hells Gate State Park Campground

      Loud

Overall, a nice state park campground, but a little too close to the city. The bathrooms were decent, with free showers. We arrived around 6pm and the weather was weird, light rain then hail, but it stopped after about an hour. We started to settle in and then a group of maybe 30 teenage boys with a handful of “leaders” arrived around dark taking up 4 spots near us. The kids were rowdy throwing firecrackers until midnight. The leaders did absolutely nothing to stop them and neither did the campground. Luckily they slept and then all took off early around 8am after morning prayers. In hindsight, nothing against the campground other than close proximity to each other and the city and the camp host didn’t break up the “fun”

      Hells Gate State Park Campground

      Excellent as usual

We have tented here several times over the years while motorbike camping, this time was in our 5th with the bikes in garage. We stayed in the Birch Loop with water and hydro hook up. Nice mature shade trees with good clearance. Short walk to a great beach. Staff were great to deal with. Short drive for Costco and such. Great location for a motorbike base camp. So many great roads…especially the Spiral Highway and Snake River. When the jet boats are out playing which seemed mainly on the weekend it could be annoying to some but we really didn't notice it. Birch loop is well shielded from the river by mature trees. Happy Camping. Oh, and don't park on the grass.

      Spring Valley Reservoir

Good fishing; wooded sites are best, but expect wind and noise.

Popular park with families, so it's a bit loud until around midnight.  The tenting areas near the lake (and the RV area) are exposed to a lot of wind.  There are about 4 sites (near the trailhead) that are back in the trees and significantly less windy.  No skeeters when we were there (early June), but I suspect they're there once summer heats up.   Short trail around the lake is nice for waterfowl viewing, and if you're a fisherman I saw some nice strings of trout being carried. Seems to get some slob campers -- had to clean out a campfire ring near our site because it was full of scorched cans.   Site 15 had a nice area to hang our hammocks for sleeping, and even though it was right near the trailhead, the hikers were quiet and polite.   If you're just looking for a camping site near Moscow, it's acceptable.

      Tucannon Campground

      Absolutely beautiful

So, I should start by saying that we didn't end up camping here, as it's a first-come, first-serve camping site. It was about a two hour drive from Walla Walla, and we didn't get there in time to find an open camp site. We did drive around the entire camp site and walk around, and it was beautiful. Suitable for both RV and tent camping. I'd just like to warn potential campers that the GPS gave us the wrong directions and took us on this very backwoods road that was pretty much not a road and the side of a mountain. There is a real road going to this campsite!

    Guide to Lapwai

Triple H Mini Ranch accommodates equestrians passing through the Lapwai area with secure, well-designed facilities for horses. Located in the lower Clearwater River watershed at approximately 1,000 feet elevation, this property offers both camping and specialized equine services. The region experiences hot, dry summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F in July and August, while spring and fall provide milder conditions for outdoor activities.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: Access Hells Gate State Park Campground for riverfront activities on the Snake River. "Awesome camp ground right on the river. We saw lots of different wild life. The only down side is a out of state fishing license is kind of expensive," notes Shane M.

Hiking trails: Explore the trail systems that connect the region. "The hiking trails are great with lots of options for easy hikes by the water or tougher ones up the mountain. Either way, you can't go wrong," reports Kyle G. about trails near Hells Gate State Park.

Wildlife viewing: The Lapwai area provides opportunities to observe diverse wildlife. "We saw lots of different wild life," mentions Shane M. while camping at Hells Gate, and birdwatchers can find raptors in the higher elevations of surrounding public lands.

    What campers like

Proximity to historic sites: The Lapwai region offers access to significant historical locations. "Camping right on the Snake River with Lewis & Clark Discovery Center. Lots of sites, water restrooms, showers, and fire pits. No hookups," explains Jaime B. about Hells Gate State Park.

Wildflower viewing: Spring and early summer bring colorful displays to the region. "Great WILDFLOWER BLOOM in the spring. At 5000 feet, June to early July is a peak bloom time," reports Alyse L. about North Thomason Meadows in the broader region.

River recreation: Multiple campers mention the appeal of riverside camping options. "Great place to base for river adventures!" says Erin S. about locations along the Snake River, highlighting the water-based activities available near Lapwai.

    What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Summer temperatures can reach extreme levels in lower elevations. "It is also very hot in the summer," cautions Elizabeth S. about camping at Hells Gate State Park.

Reservation requirements: Many horse campgrounds near Lapwai, Idaho require advance booking. Spring Valley Reservoir offers reservable sites with amenities that may appeal to travelers with animals. "I like how the RV sites have water and electricity unlike most campgrounds in the area," notes Hannah C.

Limited privacy: Some campgrounds have open layouts with minimal separation between sites. "Hells Gate is a great campground, but know what you are getting into. The park is VERY parklike with some trees, but overall there is little privacy on the loops," warns Erin S.

    Tips for camping with families

Accessible trails: Some paths accommodate various mobility needs. "Very family friendly place and the trail is wheelchair accessible. Great trek along the river. Watch for rattlesnakes in the area!" advises Celine K. about Panjab Campground.

Activity variety: Multiple recreational options help keep children engaged. "This is a large campground for the area and there is plenty to do around the state park. Fishing, hiking, swimming, boating, disc golf, volleyball mountain biking," observes Elizabeth S.

Safety awareness: Families should be prepared for local wildlife encounters. "Watch for rattlesnakes in the area!" warns Celine K., highlighting the importance of teaching children about potential hazards.

    Tips from RVers

Site dimensions: Many sites have specific spatial limitations. "Our spot was plenty long enough, but not as wide as I would have liked. There are two big trees on passenger side that prevent setting up a comfy patio," shares Kyle G. about Tucannon Campground.

Road conditions: Access roads to some equestrian camping facilities near Lapwai require attention. "When looking at directions to get here, heads up that the roads that connect Tucannon Rd to Hwy 12 going east are not suitable for big rigs, so you'll have to drive west all the way to Hwy 12," advises Laura M.

Service availability: Cell coverage varies significantly throughout the region. "Zero cell reception in this entire area, pretty much all the way until hwy 12," notes Laura M. about the Tucannon area, reminding travelers to plan communications accordingly.
