Best Equestrian Camping near Broxton, GA

General Coffee State Park Campground features a dedicated equestrian camping area with four sites specifically designed for visitors with horses. The equestrian campground is separate from the main camping loops and provides basic amenities including pit toilets, though shower facilities require purchasing a shower pass to access the main campground bathhouses. Sites in the equestrian area are positioned close together but offer more seclusion and quieter surroundings than the main campground loops. The park maintains equestrian trails throughout the property, providing riders with scenic routes through forests and alongside the 17-mile river. The farm area within the park houses horses, donkeys, sheep, and other animals that campers can visit and feed.

The equestrian trails at General Coffee State Park connect to a network of paths that showcase the park's diverse ecosystems, including cypress swamps accessed via wooden boardwalks. Horse owners should note that the equestrian sites lack direct shower facilities, requiring a short drive to the main campground for full amenities. The park's location approximately 30 minutes from Broxton Rocks provides additional riding opportunities for longer stays. Towns Bluff Park offers an alternative camping option in the region, with primitive camping areas along the Altamaha River. The park's natural setting provides opportunities for trail riding with access to wooded areas and riverside paths. Seasonal considerations include higher humidity and insect activity during summer months, particularly in swampy areas.

    General Coffee State Park Campground

    Great weekend camp

This is a good campground divided into 2 loops. Many pull throughs. We had site #12 which was gigantic. All the sites are open to your neighbors. Small park with a few trails, small pond, and farm. The farm was great with chickens, sheep, donkey and horse. On our visit there were 3 day old lambs!! Can fish in small pond and rent peddle boats or kayaks but this pond is very small. This is a great place for 3/4 days. Went for dinner and to local bakery in nearby town of Douglas Georgia.

    General Coffee State Park Campground

    Great campground for younger campers

We have always liked “quieter” campgrounds with less crowds, more open spaces, and larger sites. That being said, this park has some nice hiking trails, equestrian trails, a really interesting and enjoyable farm with animals, and a lot of stuff to do. The store has the basics, like firewood and ice and some odds and ends. We stayed in the equestrian campground, which consists of four sites. They are very close together. They also only have pit toilets and no shower facilities. We had to buy a shower pass in order to use the shower facilities in the main campgrounds. The campgrounds there have no privacy; they are jam packed together, but great if you are a social camper. Very little foliage in those areas leaves you zero privacy. It’s very noisy also. Facilities were relatively clean. Campsite loop one is older, campsite two is newer. If you want some peace and quiet, and don’t mind the lack of showers, the equestrian sites are the way to go. If you’re a social camper, go with loop two. Loop one just looks a bit tired and in need of updating.

    General Coffee State Park Campground

    Memorial Day Weekend 2020

We tent camped for 2 nights in campsite #1 in campground #1. This site is the first site to the right when you pull into the campground. There are trash cans at the campground exit and a direct line of sight view of the dump station. The west river trail runs right behind the campsite. The site itself is spacious with plenty of shade. There are a couple of good sets of trees for hanging a hammock. The electric box is a little further from the tent pad (which is packed sand and not gravel) than most sites I’ve stayed at, so I was happy that I brought an extension cord. The camp restrooms are adequate but not at all ADA accessible at campground #1. There are 3 toilet stalls, 2 that have working latches, and 2 shower stalls- both with working latches. Both of the showers have a small little room for you to change clothes with a hook on the wall and a hook on the door and a little bench. If you’re tall, be ready to duck to get your head under the water because the shower heads are low. Temperature and pressure were good. Bonus perk- stray cats at the campground.

The park itself has some cool trails. We hiked the west river trail all the way to the farm at the front of the park. It took us over wooden boardwalks over swampy Cyprus areas and through the forest around the 17 mile river. It was pretty and the heritage tobacco farm was really cool. There are restrooms and a coke machine at the farm. The coke machine takes cards, but bring lots of water with you. There are lots of animals that are used to being fed, so buy some food at the visitor’s center, or prepare to be made to feel guilty. The farm is situated next to a small lake, and when the world isn’t shutdown due to COVID-19, they rent boats. The lake is big enough to boat around in for a little while and there are fish to be caught- carp from what I could tell.

There was a small gravel road that split off from the first group picnic shelter area that takes you down to the 17 mile river for fishing access. The 17 mile river dries up some years, but the deeper “lakes” keep water in them during those dry years. The river wasn’t flowing while we were here, but there was some standing water in places that would have been dry if it hadn’t rained recently.

The park is about an hour and a half drive from the main entrance of the Okefenokee swamp. We drove down there and rented a kayak so we both could go paddle the swamp. On the way down there, somewhere outside of waycross, we passed a mudding course, if that’s more your style.

Overall, this is someplace that I probably wouldn’t come back to because I’ve done all the things that the park has to offer, and there are more parks to explore. It’s definitely worth a visit for a night or two, or as a jumping off point for other activities this part of the state has to offer.

    General Coffee State Park Campground

    Still recovering from Helen

Came in June 2025. Only one trail open and it’s not the one with access to swamp. The park has beautiful bone structure and I’m sure once fixed, it will be great. But as of now, very limited hiking. We did not visit farm but it seemed cute as well as its little lake where we saw brim and bass. Campground 1 is on an unpaved but well packed dirt road. Sites are small with limited privacy but very quaint. Campground 2 has a paved main road, with bigger sites and more privacy. All sites are pull thru. Outer ones give you access to the nature trail (closed except for small loop). Because it’s near the swamp, it is hot, humid and buggy. Bring your thermacells.

The park contains two separate camping loops with pull-through sites on packed dirt and gravel surfaces. What to do

Trail riding: General Coffee State Park provides scenic routes through diverse ecosystems including cypress swamps and forest areas. According to Kayla S., "We hiked the west river trail all the way to the farm at the front of the park. It took us over wooden boardwalks over swampy Cyprus areas and through the forest around the 17 mile river." The trails connect various parts of the park, making them suitable for both hiking and horseback riding.

Visit the heritage farm: The farm area houses various animals and agricultural displays. Kirsten W. notes, "We love buying carrots to feed all the farm animals and if you want some good exercise rent one of the pedal boats." Jennifer H. adds that the farm gives "a feeling of what it was like 100 years ago" with its collection of historic buildings.

Fishing opportunities: Towns Bluff Park provides access to the Altamaha River for fishing enthusiasts. Andrew H. describes it as "quiet and secluded on the bank of the altamaha river, perfect for a quick weekend getaway." The park offers both primitive camping areas and spots with basic amenities for overnight stays.

Spacious campsites: Many sites at General Coffee State Park offer ample room for setup and outdoor activities. Rachel G. mentions, "We had site #12 which was gigantic." Michael R. adds that the park has "large private sites" throughout the campground areas, making it comfortable for various camping styles.

Clean facilities: The park maintenance receives positive reviews from visitors. Michael R. notes "bathrooms are always spotless" and Lisa M. confirms the facilities are "clean but the showers could've used a little attention." The well-maintained infrastructure contributes to the overall camping experience.

Natural surroundings: Enrique D. describes General Coffee as a "very peaceful park some nice walking paths beautiful wildlife around." The natural setting provides opportunities to observe local flora and fauna while enjoying the quieter atmosphere away from urban areas.

What you should know

Seasonal conditions: Summer brings high humidity and insects, particularly in swampy areas. G F. advises, "Because it's near the swamp, it is hot, humid and buggy. Bring your thermacells." Weather patterns affect trail conditions and comfort levels throughout the year.

Trail access limitations: Some trails may be closed due to weather damage or maintenance. G F. notes from a recent visit, "Only one trail open and it's not the one with access to swamp. The park has beautiful bone structure and I'm sure once fixed, it will be great."

Primitive camping options: Big Mike's Ranch offers an alternative equestrian-friendly environment with basic accommodations. Theresa B. describes it as having "baby goats, donkeys, horses, chicken that roam free during the day and at night the donkey keep predators away so it's super safe and quiet if you don't mind the roosters."

Tips for camping with families

Farm animal interactions: Children particularly enjoy the agricultural exhibits. Rachel G. reports, "The farm was great with chickens, sheep, donkey and horse. On our visit there were 3 day old lambs!!" Remember to purchase animal feed at the visitor center for the full experience.

Recreational activities: Towns Bluff Park provides river access for water activities. Monte W. describes exploring opportunities: "We walked down to the river where the boat ramp is and there are also plenty of areas to explore and gather wood."

Bicycle-friendly environment: The paved roads in certain campground sections create safe areas for children to ride. Michael R. mentions General Coffee is a "great place for bike rides too," making it suitable for family outings with younger campers.

Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: Some pull-through sites have obstacles that limit access for larger vehicles. Lisa M. advises, "Be careful about some of the pull through spaces as there are trees that might make it difficult for longer RVs to get into." Advance research or early arrival helps secure suitable sites.

Road conditions: Access roads to some camping areas may present challenges. Lisa M. notes, "There were quite a few potholes on the road, coming back into the campground," which could affect travel with larger rigs or during inclement weather.
