Laura S Walker State Park Campground

    Beautiful campground

This is such a beautiful park! The grounds were always clean. The trails were always clean. The boardwalk was significantly damaged by hurricane Helene, so part of that trail is closed. It’s quiet and dark at night. We loved sitting at the gazebo and just watching the water. It’s so nice to see the playground area for the kids. They even have an outdoor workout gym area. There are a ton of places to sit under pavilions. The outdoor areas are so amazing.

I wish I knew more about our site when I booked it. Our site was very unlevel thanks to tree roots. How dare they grow there. 🤣🤣 Our site did not have any room in the back and it was oddly placed with two other sites. Thankfully we had nice neighbors, so it wasn’t a concern. I felt bad sitting near our rug because we were looking into the back of another RV. I didn’t want them to feel creeped out by us, so we tried to put our chairs at the front of our RV. We also had a power line in our spot, so we had to go at an angle to stay clear of it. If we go back, I would definitely go for a spot on the outer ring. I do have to say, this is the only park we’ve been to where people just cut through sites to get over to the bathhouse. We were sitting outside and people were only a few feet away from us to cut through. I know it’s not a written rule, but just etiquette. They easily could’ve walked ten feet to the right to cut through the empty space instead of our site.

The bathhouse near our site is definitely on the older side (we didn’t investigate the other one since it wasn’t near us). The water pressure was on the lower end and one showers was missing a shower head. Yes, we use the bathhouse because there are four of us and our site did not have full hookups. We also prefer to stretch out in the shower versus the tiny shower in our RV. That is our choice. They do have washers ($0.75) and dryers ($1.00).

The camp hosts were nice. All of the state park employees were very nice and helpful.

    Nice quiet adn relaxing

LSW is a nice quiet park. Playground for the kids. Walking trails, boardwalk on one end of the lake. Lake isnt big, boats and jet skis are limited. I hear the fishing is good. Lots of open areas to enjoy. Bikes, canoes and kayaks to rent.

We were in site#2. Nice level site. The site directly behind us was somewhat close, but otherwise a good site. We have friends in#30 and#31, not too close but not too far away.

The hosts did a good job of keeping the bathhouse clean and stocked. The office staff were helpful and nice. Over all a nice park that we will visit again.

    Towns Bluff Park

    Great campground

This is a county campground. It takes Pass Port America for Sunday thru Wednesday. If you’re looking for a resort campground, go somewhere else, this out in the middle of the woods, isolated, quiet and very nice. The lady that runs the museum & campground is very nice. She will do anything within her power to make your stay great. The sites are water & electric with a dump site as you leave 30/50 amp pull through/ back in. All sites appear to be close to level. Hazelhurst & Baxley are reasonably close. Gas/Diesel within 3 miles. Good food at Jan’s Chicken & Ma’s close to Uvalda.

    Small but great park!

This is a very nice little. The is a small lake to paddle and swim and the Nature Trail is a nice and easy hike, about 3 miles going across the lake and back. It is very close to Waycross and Okefenokee Swamp Park with guided boat tours. We stayed on site 26 which is one of 3 25 ft or smaller sites.

Laura S Walker State Park Campground

Nicely kept, not much to do

The camping area is very small, with sites close to each other and no privacy (flat area, tall pines without vegetation between sites). Having said that, it was pretty quiet; mostly used by retirees. It has a cute dog park, with areas for large and small pups. It has clean bathrooms and washer dryer that accepts apple pay. Park has a tiny beach for its tiny lake. Unfortunately, the very small lake is used by jet skiers and ski boats so very loud and no good for swimming, paddling or fishing except really early or late in the day. Two short trails are cute with tortoises. The bugs are enthusiastic so if you’re not ready to bathe in DEET, you will pay the price. Good park to spend the night on the way somewhere.

    Peace and Quite

My daughter and I stayed the weekend here in Dec, 2017. It was a nice and peaceful getaway. Nothing really to do but hiking and hanging around the campground. The hosts were great and very attentive to our needs. It was cold at night and they made sure we had enough firewood. The bathrooms were heated and clean. Nice place if you just needed to get away for a few days.

    Well kept and great staff

Great view of the lake from Site 11. Office staff and hosts were all very pleasant and have done a good job keeping things clean. Bathrooms/Showers were clean if well-worn. We walked the reasonably short hiking trail to the boardwalk which crosses the lake. WiFi worked well.

    Primitive Site Bullard Creek WMA

About 8 miles north of Hazlehurst, GA, on a dirt road turn off just before the Altamaha River, this primitive site lies in solitude amongst the loblolly pines. Besides the people who were really loud camping near us, it was a wonderful space. No water or electric hook ups unless you go to the RV site. There are showers, sinks and bathrooms near the river which is only a short walk from the site. There is a boat ramp there and tubing/floating down the river was a popular activity. Bugs weren't too bad thankfully!!

Laura S Walker State Park Campground

    Awesome place!

This is a fabulous little campground! Friendly, helpful staff, clean bathrooms and showers, hot showers, golf course, trails, beautiful lake and close to Okefenokee Swamp. There's a group camp facility really cute cabins to rent, a marina and lots of waterfront picnic area. Great place for groups! I was there to see the swamp and attend an SOTF campout. Wifi is spotty sometimes. I'll definitely return if I ever get to this area again.

Guide to Baxley

Towns Bluff Park sits along the Altamaha River approximately 20 miles from Baxley, Georgia. The park features camping sites with water and electric hookups for tent campers and RV enthusiasts. Located in Jeff Davis County, this area offers multiple glamping opportunities within a 40-mile radius, with several sites positioned near waterways for fishing and water recreation access.

What to do

Fishing the Altamaha River: Towns Bluff Park provides access to one of Georgia's premier catfish rivers. "Nice campground right next to the best catfish river out there," notes Scott S. about Towns Bluff Park. The river sustains various fish species and offers both bank fishing and boat access.

Hiking local trails: Multiple short trails wind through the regional parks. Visitors to Laura S Walker State Park mention seeing wildlife during hikes. "There are two short trails that are cute with tortoises. The bugs are enthusiastic so if you're not ready to bathe in DEET, you will pay the price," reports one camper named G F.

Water recreation: Laura S Walker State Park features a lake with regulated hours for motorized watercraft. "Has a window of time when boats on jetskis can be on the water allowing for a more peaceful atmosphere in the morning and evening," explains Christina C. The park offers kayak rentals and a swimming area when weather permits.

What campers like

Quiet atmosphere: Many glamping spots near Baxley maintain a peaceful environment. "It's a nice place if you just needed to get away for a few days," says Angela B. about her winter stay at Towns Bluff Park. The rural location minimizes light pollution and noise.

Clean facilities: Campground maintenance receives consistent positive mentions. At 341 RV Park, a reviewer notes, "This RV Park is clean, friendly and has Full Water and Sewer Hookups." Similarly, at Laura S Walker, a camper states, "The hosts did a good job of keeping the bathhouse clean and stocked."

Helpful staff: Campground hosts earn praise for their attentiveness. "Mrs Shirley was the best. Stayed about 9 months while working. One of my favorites," writes Bob W. about Beaver Creek RV Campground. Another camper adds, "Miss Shirley, the owner, is very friendly and helpful."

What you should know

Site spacing varies: While some campgrounds offer spacious sites, others place campers in closer proximity. "The sites are level but there are some tight turns. Sites are also very close together, so very little privacy," warns Joel R. about Laura S Walker State Park.

Seasonal conditions: Summer heat and humidity affect comfort levels. Georgia summers regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity. At Barrington County Park, seasonal closures can impact availability. "Maintenance is starting 2/12/24. Not sure how long this will last, but park will be closed for some time," reports Hayden W.

Road conditions: Some campgrounds require navigation on unpaved roads. "The long sandy road coming in is often washboard and occasionally has big dips or ruts. So drive very mindfully," cautions Katie A. about Barrington Park access.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Laura S Walker State Park includes recreational facilities for children. "It's so nice to see the playground area for the kids. They even have an outdoor workout gym area," notes Lorilee S. These features provide structured activity options beyond hiking and water recreation.

Dog-friendly options: For families traveling with pets, Laura S Walker State Park offers a dedicated dog area. "The dog park is large, with two sections and grass," mentions Joel R., making it suitable for exercising pets away from camping areas.

Seasonal activity planning: Plan outdoor activities for mornings and evenings during summer months. "Unfortunately, the very small lake is used by jet skiers and ski boats so very loud and no good for swimming, paddling or fishing except really early or late in the day," advises G F. about Laura S Walker State Park.

Tips from RVers

Leveling challenges: Tree roots can affect site conditions at established campgrounds. "Our site was very unlevel thanks to tree roots. How dare they grow there," explains Lorilee S. about Laura S Walker State Park. Bring additional leveling blocks when camping in wooded areas.

Limited full hookups: Most campgrounds offer water and electric connections but fewer provide sewer hookups. "There are 2 pull through sites, and 2 full hook up sites. The rest are back in with water & electric," notes Joel R. about Laura S Walker State Park. Plan accordingly for tank capacities.

Site selection strategy: When booking, request outer ring sites when available. "If you aren't lucky to get one of the sites right on the lake the inner sites can get a little crowded with very little privacy," advises Andrew S. Similarly, Don H. notes about Towns Bluff Park: "The sites are water & electric with a dump site as you leave 30/50 amp pull through/back in. All sites appear to be close to level."
