Awesome Campground on the water

This is an awesome campground on a large lake with fairly secluded sights. Cell phone service was pretty spotty which became an issue while trying to do some hiking. Their are a number of activities available including, hiking, biking, fishing and boating. This campground is extremely family friendly, almost too much for our liking as there were kids EVERYWHERE. There is a large beach area and an event center where they hold daily shows and classes. They even have a put-put course on sight. Bathrooms and facilities were well maintained, clean and plentiful. This is an extremely large campground! My biggest complaint would be the lack of markings on hiking trails. We had a hard time finding some of the trailheads even with the maps provided at the main office. I would like to make a trip back here during the week to avoid some of the crowds but outside of that this is an outstanding place to camp. Even with the weekend crowd we very much enjoyed ourselves!

Nice campground

Fort Mountain State Park is a nice place to camp! The drive to the park is very scenic, with 180 degree Mountain views. The park has a small lake with a beach and swimming area, kayak and aqua bike rentals, fishing, mountain bike trails, hiking trails, a mini golf course, playground, and picnic areas throughout.

The campground has two main loops, lake side and creek side. Both are gated, so you will need a code to enter. We stayed in the lakeside loop on site 62. It was a very spacious site, plenty of shade, “waterfront” (none of the sites were exactly on the water, but paths through the woods to the water) There’s a trail around the lake too, I believe it was just under a mile long. Most of the sites in the lake loop were great, all wooded and most of them have a view of the water, you can’t go wrong with any of them.

There’s an area called “Squirrels nest” and I believe it was a tent area that looked really cool, I would like to stay here with a group! It is located in the lake loop. There’s some backcountry sites in the park also, I planned to hike to one to check it out, but the trails aren’t marked very well and I couldn’t find my way without driving to a trailhead so I didn’t see them. The hiking was disappointing to me, but I’m accustomed to Smoky Mountain hikes.

The creek side loop looked nice through the woods when I hiked by, but I didn’t actually go through the loop.

The restrooms were great, very clean, very spacious showers. Modern and well maintained.

There’s a store at the campground check in, it has ice, firewood and other essentials, plus some souvenirs and such. They gave me a trail map along with the campground map.

The day use area (beach, picnic, mini golf area) was SUPER crowded on Saturday, so be aware if you plan on using this area, might want to plan on staying mid week.

Nice wooded, level spots throughout the campground, great spot to camp.

Peace and Quite

Another great Georgia State Park that offers quiet opportunities for hiking, fishing and paddle boating. We made our reservations on-line a couple of weeks before our arrival, upon check in we were greeted by a friendly park staff that had our paperwork ready.

The park information and reservations can be made using the Reserve America App or web site.

https://gastateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/fort-mountain-state-park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=GA&parkId=530158.

We stayed at site 40 of Camping Area #2, the sites were well maintained and included water, electric, table and fire ring. We could receive very limited over the air TV and no cell service using Verizon as our carrier. We could also receive a weak WIFI signal at the park office parking lot. The bath houses were very clean and in great working order.

We had a great time here and will return, when planning a trip here bring what you will need as the nearest shopping is miles away in Chatsworth, GA.

Fresh air, Mountain View and quiet surroundings

The site was a pull through, mostly level and had views of the woods. I like my sites to be more private from other sites but it helped to have the woods on your sitting side.

The restroom was newly remodeled and kept clean.

The park has great opportunities for hiking and biking. It is close to Ellijay for junking, wineries and apple picking.

Beautiful mountain views!

We have tent camped here three times and can't wait to go back! The sites in campground 1 are spaced apart, large, shaded and close to bath house. We camped on sites 13 and 15 in campground 1 and on site 52 in campground 2, which I think is one of the best sites in #2. Make sure you hike up to the fire tower and the observation deck for great views! The trail around the lake is very nice and even good for younger kids. Wildlife is everywhere, we saw a large red headed woodpecker, deer, squirrels, and even bears!! We learned our lesson about putting up any food/coolers at night...we have the teeth marks in a cooler as a keepsake!

Rocky ruins of a mysterious wall

There is an ancient stone wall across the top of the mountain that no one is sure who built. Most credible theory is Native Americans around 500 AD, but there are other wired stories. Lots of hiking, a large lake for fishing, and bike and equestrian trails. We picked wild blueberries for breakfast just a few yards from our camp site. The campground is large, water and electric and some full hookups. There is a museum and small store.

Lots of woodsy options; love the platforms

Fort Mountain has options for every kind of camper. From pull through and hookup sites for RV campers to the walk-in sites and platform sites, formerly known as the squirrel's nest. Lots of trees, the restrooms and bath houses are very well kept. There's a nice lake with a swimming area and paddle boat and canoe rentals. There are also nice hiking trails, most of them are pretty easy and well-maintained. There are some beautiful more advanced trails that give you some amazing views of the mountains on various Overlook sites. There are also several beautiful waterfalls for hikers with a little more physical skill. You definitely have to be prepared for Bears. There are bear proof storage containers in a few areas, otherwise everything must be kept stored securely such as in a vehicle. The Bears are not aggressive but they certainly know how to get into a cooler. The platform sites in the squirrel's Nest are fairly remote and rustic. Some of those sites have room to pitch a tent, some of them not so much. You definitely get good exercise hauling your gear from the car but the walk is well worth the privacy. They have also just recently built several additional cabins for those who prefer to be inside.

First time Platform camper

I'll be honest. I've never slept outside of a tent. I've always wanted to, but never had the guts to do it. I looked up information on the platforms (also called Squirrel's Nest) on the state park website. It looked doable to me! The description stated it was about 100 yards from the parking area to the platforms. One of the pictures on the website showed (what I thought was an actual photo) a beautifully cleared flat trail. The distance to the platforms is definitely further than 100 yards, the trail is full of large roots and rocks, and it is a steep incline to haul your gear (small cooler, bundle of wood, your pack, chair, food, etc) especially if you're by yourself! The site itself was in a beautiful location, had a hand pump on site, and also had a shared bear proof storage box (shared between 2 sites). There is definitely active wildlife here!! Two other couples at two separate platform sites had encounters with a bear the same weekend I was here. Needless to say, I did it! I slept outside of a tent!! I'm very proud of myself for doing it and will check that off my must try list!

The staff were very helpful and courteous. The bathrooms looked new and clean. The trails were awesome. Definately take the time to do the overlook trails. The views are just stunning! But make sure you have everything you need, because the nearest town doesn't have much to offer other than fast food and one very decent grocery store. If you are tent camping, make sure to be bear aware. The black bears are prominent in the area, although we didn't see any.

Just be prepared if you choose one of these that you will be carrying in your stuff. Can't park near them. But it was worth it to have the quiet and seclusion. Loved it!! Way, way, way up

Ft Mountain State Park off I75 Dalton, Ga. A bit of a drive through the interesting,,scenic Georgia countryside. Situated between Chatsworth and Ellijay, I don't think Georgia believes in gaurdrails. The drive up from Chatsworth was a blast, if you love roads that turn and swerve and give you some awesome views. On the way out I took the route through Ellijay, this is where the population built their residences. In the town of Ellijay you will find some antique shops and other varied small businesses, a good break from nature if your in the area for a bit.

The reason for the 3 star is I was not impressed by the staff. One of the Park Attendants was very nice and approachable. The other three younger employees were rude and too busy to look up from their phones to say hi.

Otherwise I totally enjoyed my visit. Check your reservation and preference. The campsites are named appropriately, you can have easy access to the lake from one camping area and more privacy in the other. Both have trail access.

Facilities were okay and maintained. The campsites were a little close and stacked around each other throughout the woods. I would pick an outer site if you have the option. Gravel pads, picnic table and fire ring included.

The lake loop was gravel , Blu was not happy and it would not be stroller friendly(to me run off into the lake would be an issue). Water craft rental , nice beach and crafts, plus bilingual signage.

Memorial Day Weekend was Awesome..

We spent Memorial Day weekend at Fort Mountain and it was awesome. We camped in a Pioneer campsite #2 which is a 3 sided pavilion that would easily sleep 8-10 people if you were only using bed rolls and sleeping bags. Pioneer camping has its challenges, but each site has an outhouse and a picnic table and prebuilt fire ring. There is an original fire tower on top of the mountain at the end of the trail. A Great Lake for kayaks and fishing with Jon boats, paddle boats, and canoes avaialble for rentals. Lots of cool lake side tent sites and trailer sites are also avaialble. We have camped several times with our scout troop. Lots of cool trails surround the park. There were fireworks in neighboring towns a short,15 min drive both nights. The towns near by have stores and food if your not I the mood to cook. The history is well documented on displays all around the park. And the there is a station that broadcasts at the end of one of the public service roads.
