Coldwater Equestrian Campground — Blackwater River State Forest

Perfect secluded equestrian camp with horse stable and trails.

This beautiful equestrian campground offers 55 RV/tent campsites and one tent only site and 60 horse stalls. All campsites have water and electrical hookups. There is a dump station, restrooms, showers, and a dining facility available by reservation. Cold Water Creek runs along the north edge of the campgrounds with easy access from the camp sites. A very beautiful area. Only complaint is the the campsites are right next to each other with no screening between sites.

      Peace and quiet on Coldwater

Most of the sites from #16 to #56 are shaded, some more than others. All the sites are not the same size, some being larger than the others. Very friendly staff especially the Rangers. Faye (one of the rangers) is great. We had our 3 year old granddaughter with us and she came by at least twice a day to give her a ride on the golf cart and printed of pages she could color on rainy days. She didn’t discriminate either..all the children at the campground got to take a ride. Lots of trails to ride your horses. A lot of the campsites are right on the water. You even have a private huge sandbar for campers only. The showers and bathrooms were always clean and nice. Even though we didn’t use it, there’s a large community center on site to use. We stayed on site #56 and it was right on the water. It was also next to the road. The site was extra super sandy (beach sand) and would be a lot better if they removed some of it. All the other campers were super friendly. We will be back.

Hidden Gem in the Alabama Woods!

We stayed here for Christmas of 2021. This place was gorgeous! Lakes and rivers everywhere and the views were incredible. Lots of waterfront sites available. We had our annual multi family meet up with a fifth wheel and our converted bus. Both campers were welcomed and accommodated. Full hookups and primitive camping available. Nice bath house and laundry facility. Playground. Horse stable for overnight. If you enjoy hiking, fishing, kayaking, biking or horseback riding this place Is for you. 30 min from the WindCreek Casino Atmore and local shopping.

Beautiful park to camp next to the lake with 2 fishing docks. No bathrooms just port a potty. The camping price is $2 per night, no reservation is needed, and is online payment.

      Great campsite!

Full hookups, playground for kids, lots of little lakes and river access throughout the park. It was too cold for water activities during our stay, but we had a wonderful time walking around and exploring the property. Quiet, clean spots. Wonderful atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back!

      Geneva State Lake

      Beautiful and secluded

Note - I drive a 20’ van - so non level is ok for me but these sites were not level - but I spent 2 nights sat/sun - and it was gorgeous especially for sunrise. Wish I could have stayed longer but I didn’t want to get stuck there in the rain - it was about 5 miles of dirt roads to get in there and they were well maintained but I didn’t want to risk it.

There are 2 hiking trails - more like atv trails that go to either side of the lake from the campground. You can go further into the forest but it was deer hunting season so I didn’t explore.

It was so peaceful and the sunrises over the lake were breathtaking.

$5 a day and there is a QR code on the board to pay, or you can by an annual pass for $40 if you plan on staying at least 9 days it’s worth it. It doesn’t hold your place on the form unless you create an account which is why the dyrt link doesn’t work.

Overall if I’m passing through again I would go back.

Also appreciated the free trash cleanup, clean porta potties and picnic tables. No fire rings really but you can tell where people burn campfires.

It’s a well maintained park and you can tell a lot of love has gone into it. Even had a ranger come through!

      Great for free

Beautiful views, clean restrooms, and free. Other campers were very friendly. The only reason for a 3 is the rough drive getting there.

    Guide to Holt

Coldwater Equestrian Campground offers equine enthusiasts a dedicated camping experience in Blackwater River State Forest. Beyond the main campground area, the forest contains multiple primitive camping locations for those seeking a more secluded outdoor experience. The northwest Florida region features gently rolling terrain with sandy soil and pine forests, creating ideal conditions for trail riding throughout most of the year. Winter temperatures rarely drop below freezing, while summer brings high humidity and temperatures in the 90s.

    What to do

Trail riding excursions: The trail system at Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve connects to broader regional trails. "If you enjoy hiking, fishing, kayaking, biking or horseback riding this place is for you. 30 min from the WindCreek Casino Atmore and local shopping," notes Caitlin M.

Fishing spots: Several small lakes dot the area around horse campgrounds near Holt, Florida. At Geneva State Lake, visitors find "2 fishing docks. No bathrooms just port a potty. The camping price is $2 per night, no reservation is needed, and is online payment," according to Vand H.

River activities: The nearby waterways provide opportunities for cooling off during warmer months. "They do not allow you to bring your own floats, but tubing with theirs is $5 per person. They have canoes. Clean beach area," shares Sherry P. about the water features at Magnolia Branch.

    What campers like

Shaded campsites: Many equestrian campers appreciate the natural canopy at Wilderness Landing. "Grass sites, some shade," notes Ken R., who describes the area as "Primitive, Quiet and Free."

Clean facilities: Maintenance standards remain high at multiple horse-friendly campgrounds. "The showers and bathrooms were always clean and nice. Even though we didn't use it, there's a large community center on site to use," reports Jennifer P. about the amenities.

Waterfront access: Direct access to waterways enhances the camping experience at Peaceful Camping in the Woods. Christopher M. describes his experience: "Parked in a clearing with 2 5th wheel renters on it...walked back into the woods along a trail and chose one of several camp clearings. Level ground, dry, lots of deer."

    What you should know

Limited connectivity: Cell service remains spotty throughout horse campgrounds near Holt. "Cell service was on the struggle bus the whole time, but overall this is a great little place," reports Terran B. about Blackwater River State Forest Coldwater Recreation Area.

Seasonal considerations: Access to some areas requires planning during wet weather. "It was about 5 miles of dirt roads to get in there and they were well maintained but I didn't want to risk it," explains SJ W. about conditions at Geneva State Lake.

Reservation systems: Each campground operates under different booking rules. Wilderness Landing offers free camping "For up to 14 days," according to Stealie F., while other facilities require advance reservations.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Children find entertainment options at select campgrounds. "The sprawling playground that aligns the campsites assures of loud, screaming children at all hours," notes Jim about Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve.

Ranger interactions: Staff at some locations make special efforts for younger campers. Jennifer P. shares that one ranger "came by at least twice a day to give her [3-year-old granddaughter] a ride on the golf cart and printed of pages she could color on rainy days."

Water safety: Hidden Lake Resort provides swimming areas, but parents should note that most waterfront locations lack lifeguards and require direct supervision of children at all times.

    Tips from RVers

Access routes: Large rigs require careful navigation on forest roads. "The only reason for a 3 is the rough drive getting there," mentions Donna G. about reaching Wilderness Landing, which offers "Beautiful views, clean restrooms, and free."

Utility considerations: Water and electrical hookups vary significantly between locations. "It's not on the big side of campgrounds but still has some of the amenities. No hookups at the campsites but there is running water (hot and cold) in the bath house with flushing toilets," explains Stealie F.
