Spacious peace
Very large camp sites, large fire pits, friendly camp staff, all make for a beautiful nite under the stars. Far enough away from town to not be bleached out and see a beautiful sky. Worth a good trip to enjoy. Have been twice so far in past year.
Nice Park
This was a very nice park. Most of the sites were large with plenty of room between each site. The only thing I would recommend is that you make sure you have plenty of length in your electric cord and water hose as they were rather far. It has some lovely trails and bike paths.
Big sites, lots of shade. Great hiking trails.
Bring plenty of water hose bug spray. Gets very busy on weekends. Bathhouse are very clean. Washer and dryer available for only a dollar. Museum and camp store. Activity on the weekend.
Great park with a lot to do!
This campground it not only midway thorough Florida but it offer so much to do! From hiking to boating, fishing to a great restaurant onsite this is a great campground!
5 stars for the primitive sites
We always camp in the primitive sites when we visit. The are large but have minimal shade. There is a picnic table and fire ring at each site and there is a toilet nearby. For showers you have to drive to the regular campground and use theirs. You can purchase firewood in the park as well. There are no hookups at the primitive sites. Behind the primitive sites is a road so you do hear cars and trucks driving by at night.
We were interested in visiting this park because it is one of Florida's oldest state parks. There are many trails you can visit while you are here. These trails are pretty cool because they are all different so you will never get bored. You can either bike, drive or walk there yourself, but there is also a tram tour you can take. There is also a museum in the park as well if you want to learn more about the area.
Secluded large camping space
Highlands hammock primitive campground is in a beautiful area of woods with plenty of tree cover and ground cover. Each camp is nicely spaced apart so you aren’t right on top of your neighbors. You can park directly at your camp ground. Town is fairly close so supplies are just a short drive. The park also has lots of walking trails. The only downside was the road that is about a mile away. It’s a long straightaway in the woods so trucks speed with the quiet area the sound travels which can be a little distrurbing from the nature sounds but not a huge deal.
Highland Hammock get away
Stayed here with a group of friends in the tent only area. We had an absolute blast. The tent area isn't as busy as the RV section is, there were a few other people camping but it was still pretty empty. We would drive over to the RV area when we needed showers or real bathrooms. There was a portapotty nearby the tent section. We loved the trails throughout Highlands Hammock, we even found some wild oranges!
the oldest state park in Florida
It was our first trip in our new RV but have been tent camping there before. On this trip we were treated to a night time tram ride because the 26 species of fireflies were out for a 2 week period. The area is beautiful and shady, staff very friendly, lots of critters on the trails.
Wooded, clean
Stayed here two nights. Seemed like many family groups were there. Lots of kids wandering around. Quiet time was moderately observed.
Park
handicap restrooms very clean, as well entire park. Rv’ers very friendly. We selected 129, handicapped one. Lots of places to walk trails and ride bikes. The CCC Museum was very interesting. BBQ, picnic table, and decent size site. Enjoyed our visit!
Hammock hanging friendly
We loved staying here and exploring the different environments. Pros: beautiful trees, waterways, and boardwalks, short trails, helpful rangers, very shady campsites among the trees, decent facilities. Cons: not much privacy for many of the sites.
Very Interactive CG
The roads in the campground are a bit narrow, traffic can go both ways (even though they are only one lane!), and the dump station is not in the best place! This was, by far, the largest campground of any of the state parks that we have stayed in. The sites were a bit close together. They also have lots of ranger-led activities like soup night, covered dish dinners, camper coffee, etc etc.
Not So Romantic Valentine's Get-a-way
We booked our tent camping trip for Valentine's Day and choose a spot with amenities so we were in with the RV's - and there was not much privacy there - sites have some trees but are fairly close and not much between them. Tent camping area was not much different but do not let this deter you from staying at this AMAZING park! This is a very busy state park because it has so much to offer! The CCC Museum cannot be missed. there is so much history there, you will be glad you took the time to check it out - great for all ages. There are many short loop trails that take you through many ecosystems, giant trees at sizes few have seen before, lots of wildlife to. These short trails are great for families and are all accessible from the roadside. You can drive right up to each one. There are longer trails that can also be explored. This part of Florida is also one of the darkest in the state, perfect for budding astronomers! Don't forget to check out the night sky, especially in the clearer cooler months of the year.
beautiful!
The flora in this park is beautiful! We tried a tram tour, which was unique! If I remember correctly it wasn’t very expensive to do the hour-long tour. I would recommend it, just something different and a way to see more of the park in a quicker manner than you would on foot :) There is also a museum to check out and an amphitheater, which has programming, in addition to hiking or biking. The campground has a lot of sites but they are decently spaced. I wouldn’t say sites are secluded, but there are some trees to try to give some privacy. A spot with shade is nice in the hot summer too! We liked the outside loop for a bit more seclusion. Great place to spend some time!
True Florida experience
Nice easy hiking trails including some boardwalks. Excellent tram tour to see the wild parts of the park (accessible). Makes a good stop on a road trip or base camp for exploring the area. Check out the nature and history museums nearby (not sure if they're officially on site), they're small but worth the time. Lots of wildlife. Didn't seem too touristy or crowded (neither day use or camp sites). Tent campsites are in wooded areas and are mostly pretty shady. Nice and clean, well-maintained like most State Parks.
Fish Eating creek campground
