Paul M. Demmick Campground — Navarro River Redwoods State Park

River access draws campers to Paul M. Demmick Campground, where approximately 27 first-come, first-served sites sit among redwood groves along Highway 128. The Navarro River flows nearby with a short trail leading to the water from the day-use area, though summer levels typically run low and gentle.

Sites closest to the river fill up fastest, particularly on weekends when arrivals should come early. The campground operates year-round at $35 per night with vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire pits at each site. Highway 128 runs parallel to the camping area, though traffic remains light enough that road noise stays minimal. Rangers make regular rounds throughout the day, maintaining clean facilities and friendly contact with campers.

Cell service remains unavailable with Verizon, requiring a drive to Mendocino for connectivity. The location provides quick access to the coast, sitting about 20 minutes from coastal destinations while the redwood canopy blocks ocean winds. "Sites near the river are best," notes L , who found plenty of privacy at site 21. Wildlife sightings prove surprisingly sparse, with few birds or insects reported by visitors.

The campground works well for those wanting redwood camping without reservations, though amenities remain basic and vault toilets can develop strong odors during busy periods.

Campers regularly cited the beautiful redwood setting with peaceful, shaded sites and clean facilities. No cell service and mixed restroom conditions noted, but most found it an excellent quiet escape near the coast.

Not too far not too close from coast

Nice campsite with around 27 ish spots. First come first serve at $35 as of 2025. I went tent camping but you can probably bring in a small RV.

It’s only a 20 ish minute drive to the coast, which can be nice since the trees give you a blockage of the rough winds from the coast.

There’s a river nearby and a small trail (less than a mile?). There was a loud group at like 1am, but majority of time people are quite after 11

Nice campground in the redwoods

Paul Dimmick is a nice little campground in the redwoods. Although Hwy 128 runs parallel to it (and not far away), there isn’t much traffic going by so road noise isn’t a bother. The campground doesn’t have a lot of sites, which I prefer, and is first come, first served so get there early if you’re going for the weekend (mid-week is wide open). Sites near the river are best. We stayed in #21 and had plenty of privacy. There’s a path down to the river near the Day Use area; the river was pretty tame, which is surprising for a campground that routinely floods in the wintertime. One strange thing about this campground: it appears to be mostly devoid of wildlife. We saw one Scrub jay and one ground squirrel while we were there and no bees, butterflies, or insects. And there was absolutely no birdsong. Very odd. (Pro tip: Don’t leave your food out overnight on the picnic table or that ground squirrel will spirit it away.) Only mark against the campground is for really stinky/gross pit toilets. No cell service with Verizon, you’ll have to drive into Mendocino for that.

Excellent small campgrounds

This campgrounds is excellent if you like quiet beautiful scenery with no amenities. This is a self check in first come first serve campground. There are plenty of vaulted toilets available. There are flush bathrooms but they were closed. The vaulted ones were extremely clean no flies and didn't have a strong odor. Some sites overlook a creek. There is trash and recycling there but they ask that you pack it out. Tall fire pits with a section of wide grate attached. Rangers and cleaning staff drove through many times in a day and were friendly.

Beautiful

This is a beautiful little spot in the redwoods. Shaded, peaceful and lovely. We arrived early afternoon in August on a Saturday and found a nice empty spot no problem. The remaining spots mostly filled up by Saturday evening. The whole campground is well shaded in the redwoods and the weather was mild. There is creek access in the camp with a small day use area by the creek. The camp is right next to the road, but traffic was minimal. There is some hiking in the area, but no trails from the campground, you will need to drive to a trailhead. This is a short drive to the coast, not far from Fort Bragg and beautiful scenery. Some spots are more private and spacious than others, but all good spots. Picnic tables and fire pit provided, no water, porta potties on site. A really great option to camp in the redwoods without a reservation.
