Camping at Two Harbors, California offers a unique coastal getaway on Catalina Island, situated at an elevation of 350 feet above sea level with a Mediterranean climate that averages 68°F year-round. The island's narrow isthmus connects two harbors—Catalina Harbor and Isthmus Cove—creating a distinctive camping environment where visitors can see water on both sides simultaneously. Glamping options have expanded beyond basic tent sites to include various accommodation types throughout the area.
What to do
Hiking trails throughout the island: At Hermit Gulch Campground, campers can access the Trans-Catalina Trail directly from camp. "I stayed here Labor Day weekend for tent camping! This site is at the end and it's not big enough to make into 2 separate sites. There's also a lot of shade relative to the other sites," notes camper Cassie R.
Kayaking and paddleboarding: Visitors praise the clear waters for paddling adventures. "The beach is right off the campground, perfect for snorkeling and paddle boarding. There is also a rental office that can provide you with diving equipment, kayaks, and other fun water activities," explains Kristil C. about her experience at Two Harbors.
Tidepooling at low tide: Canyon Campground at Leo Carrillo State Park offers beach access with marine discovery opportunities. "The best part about this campground is definitely the beach access- it's about a 10-minute walk from most sites, and you can explore some amazing tide pools and caves once you get there. The kids loved searching for hermit crabs and sea anemones," writes Alfred in a recent review.
What campers like
Stargazing conditions: The lack of light pollution creates exceptional night sky viewing. "We visited Two Harbors in late April and stayed in the campground for 1 night. Stargazing was prime as well since there are virtually no lights in Two Harbors," notes Katie R.
Access to convenience amenities: Anaheim Harbor RV Park provides glamping-style amenities within driving distance. "The staff are helpful and nice, be aware that office hours are 9a-5p. Laundry closes at 9pm. Pool needs a separate key (they gave us one on arrival)," Jennifer H. mentions, adding "Nice showers. Stores and restaurants super close. We had PF Changs delivered. Yum!"
Beach proximity and water quality: Campers frequently mention the exceptional water clarity. "The water in the harbor is super clear. We kayaked around the area and loved it. At night we had deer walking directly through our site as we were eating dinner (seriously on a few feet away)," describes Corey B. about Two Harbors Campground.
What you should know
Reservation requirements: Sites at Moro Campground at Crystal Cove State Park fill quickly. "This campground fills up fast so book early! I really like how clearly the sites are marked and how often the park rangers patrol," advises Elly A.
Transportation logistics: Ferry schedules impact camping plans. "You have to reserve on Reserve America. The sites are pretty expensive and charge by the person. $27-$29 (Winter-Summer pricing) for each person with a $10 reservation fee. You also need to have a boat ticket to take the ferry over and back," explains Hayley K.
