    Overview

Manzanita Lake Campground (elevation 5,900 ft.) is the largest campground in Lassen Volcanic National Park. It is within walking distance of the scenic Manzanita Lake, a popular fishing and family destination, and offers impressive views of Lassen Peak, the largest volcano in the park at 10,457 feet. The facility is conveniently located one mile south of the park entrance, close to The Loomis Museum, Loomis Ranger Station and popular hiking trails. Educational programs are presented at the museum and amphitheater.

    Recreation

Manzanita Lake is popular with fly fishermen, but the campground does maintain a catch-and-release policy. Non-motorized boating is also permitted and Kayak rentals are available nearby. The park boasts more than 150 miles of hiking trails, a variety of which can be accessed from the campground, including family-friendly hikes as well as those for more experienced hikers.

    Natural Features

The national park is known for its volcanic history, as well as its diversity of plants and animals. It contains 300 active volcanic domes, as well as many hydrothermal features, such as mud pots and steam vents. Lassen Peak is the southernmost active volcano in the Cascades, and the second most recent to erupt in the lower 48 of the United States before Mount Saint Helens. Lassen National Park boasts over 700 species of flowering plants and 250 species of birds, mammals, reptiles and fish. The park is at the junction of the Cascade Mountains, the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Great Basin, thus providing many unique habitats.

    Manzanita Lake Camping Cabins

    Great Get Away Location

We booked a 1 room camping cabin for 2 nights during a hiking trip. It was a great little place to stay for a few nights. It had the feel of camping but also some amenities of a cabin.

As expected, we had a full size mattress with a table and chairs inside and a small patio set outside. The space also had a large bear box, fire ring and picnic table.

The campground as a whole was very quiet, clean, and the vault style toilets were well maintained. The store was winding down for the season but the employees were pleasant and helpful.

    Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort

Great camping for tent or RV

We highly recommend this campground as they have all the amenities…a general store, boat rental, cabin rental, activities for the kiddos, a dog park and pub. Water, toilets and showers are readily available, though a bit in need of a good coat of paint and showers need cleaning/updating .

    Railroad Park Resort

    Many different accommodations

General: There are tent sites, partial hookups, and full hookup sites, as well as cabins and cabooses that can accommodate either couples or families. It was pouring when we were there, so we opted to stay in a caboose! There is also a dining car

Site Quality: The camping sites are nestled among the trees; some are pull-throughs and others are back-in (mostly the tent sites). Most of the sites appeared level, but not all of them (beware of Site 34). The pull-throughs in the center are less private (but I believe these are the ones with full hookups). The best sites in my opinion are the ones that back up to Little Castle Creek. Especially after a good rain, you can be lulled to sleep by the sound of the rushing creek!

Bathhouse: Keypad entry so I was not able to see the inside (we stayed in a caboose and therefore did not have entry). There are showers and also a very nice laundry facility.

Activities: There is a pool in season and also a hot tub that was open when we were there. It is covered but it was cold and rainy, so we didn’t try it out. There is a short hike at nearby Hedge Creek Falls and you are close to Mount Shasta.

We stayed here 25 years ago in a caboose with our daughters, and it was nice to see the place has been kept up nicely. We would definitely return and stay in the campground next time (weather permitting).

Railroad Park Resort and Dining Cart

The RV Campground is beautiful and surrounded by trees and a creek that flows behind the main RV parking area. Check in is easy. We booked ⁷online and the RV was ready for us. They also allow after hour check ins. You just drive up to the office and grab your reservation ticket off a board next to the main door of the office. They have bathrooms, laundry facilities and showers for those who would like to use them. They also have a pool and hot tub for guest to use. The Dining Cart/restaurant is a jewel only issue is they're not open daily. On the days they are open it's only for Dinner so to get the full experience you can get the hours of operation on their website. The Campground is located near several waterfalls.

Wifi at our spot was weak. Also we have t-mobile and we did not have a signal on the campgrounds/resort, but as soon as you get on the I-5 signal picks back up.

    The Hensons' Hideaway

Ranger Review: Renogy ELumne Multi-Functional Flashlight at Henson's Hideaway, Trinity Lake, CA

Henson's Hideaway is located between Weaverville, CA and Trinity Center, CA, along Highway 3 on the west side of Trinity Lake. It is centrally located to a number of the Trinity Alps trails, as well as boat access to the lake. Also, it is an easy drive to get food, supplies, beer, etc in either town. The road is plowed year round and the cabin is only a few minutes off of Highway 3.

Cabin Review: Henson's Hideaway is bookable on VRBO https://www.vrbo.com/300244) and Michelle is very easy to deal with, and very accommodating. Prices vary depending on the time of year and holiday weekends, so check with the listing page linked above for up to date info. The cabin itself is fantastic. There is a large deck downstairs that opens into a garage that has been converted into a bonus room with TV/Satellite, a pool table, extra full bathroom, and additional sleeping areas. The pool table was a fantastic unexpected bonus for a cabin in the woods. Upstairs is a very comfortable main living area with a bathroom, bedroom, full kitchen, dining/living room and a deck outside with seating for at least 4 adults. It was a very comfortable cabin with plenty of creature comforts, the kitchen was well stocked with cooking/cleaning/silverware etc. It was plenty of room for two couples, two toddlers, and two labs. The only downside was that it doesn't have a bbq. They don't keep one around because it attracts mountain critters, but people are allowed to bring their own if they would like. As always though, check with the owners for the latest info. I have posted a few pictures I took, there are more at the link above.

Product Review: As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get to test products. At the Henson's Hideaway, I tested the Renogy ELumen Multi-funtionial Flashlight (https://www.renogy.com/renogy-e-lumen-multi-functional-flashlight/.)

The flashlight comes equipped with a flashlight (obviously) with three settings (high, low, strobe), a recessed seatbelt cutter, a glass shattering hammer, a compass embedded in the butt of the grip, a solar charging panel built into the flashlight handle (here is where you can insert the old joke about solar powered flashlights, but it does work thanks to a built in lithium ion battery), LED side lighting (both red and white lights, including a strobe function), a magnet for mounting/storage and USB input/output to charge the flashlight or charge electronic devices off the flashlight's battery. Enough of the specs, on to the review. This flashlight rocks. It is plenty light for nighttime wandering around a camp/cabin. The LED side lighting is great for illuminating a small space without blinding anyone, similar to a lantern, the red strobe LED side lighting is great for roadside emergencies or to use as a beacon. I haven't had to test the glass shattering hammer or seatbelt cutter, knock on wood, but they both look like they will do the trick, and the flashlight is living in the center console of my truck for just such emergencies. It charges quickly via USB and seemed to charge quickly enough from a fully dead battery to work fine, I just set it on the dash of my truck while I drove to the cabin and when we got there it worked all weekend. The only downside is the compass, I have tested it a few different times and places and it is always a few degrees off from my other compass and the one on my smart phone. Close enough to be useful in general, but I wouldn't trust it trying to route-find.

Henson's Hideaway receives 5 stars and the Renogy Flashlight receives 4 1/2 stars due to the minor issue with the compass. Overall it is a fantastic item that is light enough to backpack with, especially given the multi functionality of the product. I highly recommend car campers and backpackers alike get one for their travels, especially given the very reasonable price of $25.

    Trinity River Adventure Inn

    Fisherman's Paradise

The Trinity River Adventure Inn cabins are a group of three cabins located on the bank of the Trinity River. The closest town for supplies is Weaverville, about a 15 min drive west. The towns of Lewiston and Douglas City are closer, but hit and miss on when things are open and what they offer. All three cabins can be rented individually, and I am sure if you group needed the space, you could rent all three at the same time. The other cabins were occupied during our stay, but that wasn't an issue. Each cabin is different, there is a large A frame cabin for larger groups, a smaller fisherman's cabin closest to the river for one or two people, and a mid size cabin for groups of 3-4. The A frame and the mid size cabin both have patios to bbq (grills provided) and hang out on, full kitchens, and very comfortable living room and bedrooms. Everything is provided, from cooking utensils to bedding/towels. Just bring food/drink. There is even satellite tv and wifi. Firewood is provided for the wood burning stoves. There is a large grassy area that slopes down to the river for people staying in all three cabins to use. There is easy access to fishing right out the backdoor of the cabins, and you could put in and take out kayaks if the water level is high enough. Boat launching facilities are located a few miles away. It is a fantastic location central to Trinity Lake, Lewiston Lake, Whiskeytown reservoir, and the beautiful Trinity Alps, with plenty of boating, swimming, water skiing, hiking, backpacking adventures within 30-60 minutes.

Manzanita Lake Campground — Lassen Volcanic National Park

    Beautiful Lake & Park

This campground is BIG. there are four loops of sites.  I am a tent camper so this area can be on the crowded side for me with not enough privacy.

That being said the lake is beautiful. Easy access for kayaks and canoes.

The sites are clean, have table, food locker and fire sit.  Bathrooms are flush with showers available.  Close by are cabins to rent on the lake and a store, rentals and even gas,

Great jumping off site to get thru Lassen Park. Can take 45 minutes to get to the other side but there is lots of hiking and incredible views.  And crazy geo thermal sites such as Bumpass Hell.

    Ripple Creek Cabins

    Great Family Friendly Cabins

Ripple Creek Cabins are located about an hour north of Weaverville, along the upper Trinity River. Each cabin is self contained and comes with cooking utensils, linens, towels, and full kitchens. There is also a picnic table and BBQ provided for each cabin. The property sits on the bank on the Trinity River, with easy river access for swimming and fishing. There is also a large grassy area for all to use that has bocce ball and horseshoes. There is easy access to the Trinity Alps Wilderness for hikers of all levels, as well as access to Trinity Lake about 20 minutes south for all that the lake has to offer. The cabins are pet friendly and wifi is available. There is no phone service or television. Each cabin has a wood burning stove, shower and toilet, but otherwise are a bit spartan compared to some cabins. But with all the easy access to outdoor activities, all you need is a place to cook, clean up, and sleep. Great to rent for couples, families, or large groups. It is a bit of a drive to Weaverville, so be sure you have all your supplies you need. The small towns of Coffee Creek and Trinity Center are closer, but may not have everything you need. Each town does have a couple of great places to eat during the Summer, specifically Trailhead Pizza in Trinity Center.

    Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort

Large, spaced out sites, water & bathrooms, serentiy

If you don't mind quite a few neighbors, this campground is awesome. There are numerous spaces and you can really get far away from people if you'd like to- as the bulk of them stay nearest the water.  There are bathrooms, flush toilets, showers, a café, ice cream shop, and kayak/paddleboard/paddleboat rentals at the lake- not to mention a huge inflatable play area. The campground is large and spacious- enshrouded by gorgeous mixed conifers and tons of wildflowers- all with a view of Mount Shasta and lake access. What could be better for a large campground really? Only 4 miles outside of Mount shasta City. Beautiful!

Manzanita Lake Campground — Lassen Volcanic National Park

Campground - Meh; Lassen - Gorgeous!

General: Four loops plus a cabin loop, however, after September 5 at noon, the only loops open are A, B, and cabins.

Site Quality: Some pull-throughs and some back-in. The back-in sites were, for the most part, better suited for tent camping as the camper pads were quite short and many were not level. We lucked out in that our camper pad was only slightly unlevel and we could make it work with our camper van. Some sites were close together with minimal separation while others had more trees separating them.

Bath/Shower house: There were several toilet options ranging from vault toilets to basic bathrooms with flush toilets, to larger restrooms with dishwashing sinks. Although there was a soap dispenser in the two closest to our site, there was no soap. The very cold water was oh-so refreshing on a cold September morning! The dishwashing sink in the A loop was locked but we did see campers using the one in the B Loop.

Activities/Amenities: There is a camper store with food, showers, gas, and laundry available. You can access both Manzanita and Reflection Lakes (1.5 and.5 miles respectively) from the campground. The Chaos Crags trailhead is approximately a half mile from the A Loop. There are kayak, cataraft, and SUP rentals available for Manzanita Lake but it was a bit chilly when we were there. There is zero cell service in the campground but it is noted there is a milepost where you can grab a signal. On our Chaos Crags hike, however, we got a strong signal on Verizon!

The campground was okay but worth it as a base camp for exploring the northwest part of the park. Happy this one has not been outsourced to a vendor and the price is still reasonable ($26 or$13 with the senior pass).

    Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort

All the amenities, none of the solitude.

This is an enourmous campground on Lake Siskiyou with every conceivable amenity, including a lakeside water park for the kids. If you are an RVer and/or traveling with kids, this is an awesome place. Lake Siskiyou is gorgeous and with its 5 mpg boat speed limit, is incredible for swimming, paddling, and fishing. Other amenities include a dirt bicycling trail around the lake, a store, restaurant, laundromat, boat launch, corded off swim area with sandy beach, and boat rentals. This is definitely not where I would go to pitch a tent, unless family was visiting with kids in tow, but if you enjoy a one stop campground/resort, this is the place. Ten minutes to golf, tennis, world class hiking and bicycling, and the town of Mount Shasta.

    My favorite new lake!

I am in LOVE with this place!!!! I have been to many lakes in northern California but nothing as perfect as this place. I accidentally booked a spot here at Siskiyou but meant to go to lake Shasta and boy was luck on my side!!! We drove past lake Shasta on our way here and it didnt have many trees and it was 104 degrees. We drove another 40 or so minutes to lake Siskiyou and the trees are so beautiful and you have the most gorgeous view of lake Shasta! Do yourself and your family a favor and book your next camping trip here!

    Siskiyou Beach and Camp

    Breathtaking scenery and enormous campground!

Despite being an incredibly busy campground, we had quite a peaceful experience here. Our site had a good amount of space, and although there were a lot of campers around us, we didn't feel overly cramped and had a decent amount of space. Every inch of the campground is covered in pine trees and smells incredible. The campground is massive and has a lot to offer- there are hiking trails, a marina, general store, and a beach, to name a few. The beach is a decent walk from the campground, but worth every minute- the lake sits at the bottom of Mt. Shasta and has an inflatable waterpark, swimming area, and water recreation rentals (kayaks, paddle boards, paddle boats, etc.). The rentals are a little pricey, but definitely worth it. We rented kayaks and the lake was so serene; the perfect way to spend an afternoon. There are a lot of families at the campground, but it never felt too rowdy because it is so spread out. The bathrooms are a short walk away, but not very clean due to the remodeling they are doing to some of the bathrooms to become a year-round facility (though there are free showers). Though there can be a lot of walking to reach the activities available, there is so much to explore, and the scenery is so beautiful that you forget about everything else.

    Quick escape

We love this campground for all of its extras while still feeling like you are in the wilderness. The campground has cabins, as well as tent and trailer spots. If you forget something, there is a small store known for its soft serve ice cream. You can rent kayaks and stand up paddle boards. Each site has a bear box which is great for keeping the chipmunks out of your food. Great views and day hikes in the Lassen National Forest.

The view will blow your mind. This place is special. Saw a gnarly rattle snake that hissed at me but didn't strike and a swarm of bees flew through. This place gets the prize for best view while sitting on the outhouse toilet. You can see for miles Mt Shasta and Shasta Lake is the distance.

Great rv park! Patti is super accommodating and helpful. It’s nice for a stop over or a couple of weeks while exploring the Shasta area.

Manzanita Lake Campground — Lassen Volcanic National Park

Great Camp in Lassen National Park

Very large camp near the western entrance of the Lassen Volcanic National Park. Situated on the banks of Manzanita Lake. There are numerous tent, RV, and a few cabin sites available that you can get with little advance notice, unlike many other national parks.

Manzanita has a small camp store with supplies with supplies, hook-ups, and dumpstations availability for RVs, and there is a boat launch for kayaks and canoes on the lake. You can also rent kayaks and canoes and fishing is also widely popular with licenses available in the store.

The camp is also a short drive from the very cool and historic museum that has information about the volcanic history of the park as well as early photographs of the 1915 eruption. It is well worth a visit and has a junior ranger program available for kids, plus general park information. Manzanita is probably the largest camp location within the park and is busy, but there is plenty of opportunities to escape into Lassen.

    Railroad Park Resort

    Did the Job

We stayed at the Railroad Park Resort near Dunsmuir, CA for 5 nights. It was fine, with a couple small issues.. The rest of the park might be wonderful - converted train cars and cabooses, cabins, and a small motel - but the rv portion sort of felt like the red-headed stepchild. I believe our fees were $280 for 5 nights. Full hook-ups, pull through site (many were back-in only) and zero privacy, although the rv park is in a pretty stand of very thinned trees at the far end of the RRP property. There is a teeny store with some basic supplies and snack foods, and ice and wood available for purchase, wifi advertised, as well as a swimming pool. The bathrooms are decent and include showers. We are a family that prefers a little more privacy away from the world, but this park was our only option as we didn't book until 3 weeks prior to our last minute trip to see family in Dunsmuir. Siskiyou County campgrounds are currently full to brimming, and people are lining up at 6am for the few fcfs sites at the FS campgrounds. Reservations are all booked out until the end of August at least.
We signed a list of rules when checking in to the RRPR, that include a strict "No marijuana use anywhere on RRP property", yet continually got wafting pot smoke from several other campsites. I complained once, and the young man at the store apologized and made a note about it. Also, the woman working in the store in the mornings and during the day was quite rude and snippy, and reiterated at least 4 times that campground guests were only to use the swimming pool down near the cabooses between 10am and 3pm - as if we weren't to meddle with their upscale guests in the train cars and cabins. It felt a bit awkward, but we did use the nice pool one day when we didn't go swimming in Lake Siskiyou.
Wifi was advertised and a log on with password provided, but we were unable to log on the entire time we were there.
There were many huge rv's including full sized busses that seemed to navigate the park just fine, and some tent sites around some of the edges.
All in all - it was not a fantastic experience, but was alright, and we met a few other wonderful campers which is always a neat experience.
Sorry - I didn't take any pictures, but there are some decent ones if Googled.

    Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort

    A lot of room

All the spots were pretty big, beautiful forest and some nice trails nearby. About a 30 minute drive from the bunny flat trail at mount shasta. There aren’t Many toiletbuildings so you have to walk further and it’s pretty busy at times.

Manzanita Lake Campground — Lassen Volcanic National Park

    Family Friendly, Sparkling Gem

Manzanita Lake is a really family friendly campground. It’s great seeing the kids ride around the loop on their bicycles and scooters. We had a perimeter site in the A loop, adjacent to the trail that runs to the lake. These sites feel particularly spacious. Due to the type of pine forest, none of them will be private. The interior sites were ok on space for being in a National Park. There is a mix between 3+ night campers and the one nighters, so the park doesn’t completely empty out each day. First come first serve campers would be advised to read the reservation signs carefully, sometimes they are marked a day or two before occupancy and that might be enough time to squeeze in a visit.

There are both plumbed and vault bathrooms, but there is no electricity—so wear a headlamp to the bathroom at night. There is also a water and drain area for dumping dish-wash water, etc. Each site has a bear box, and use of it for all food and food prep, as well as toiletries is expected—campers cannot use their cars. In A loop, we are only a short walk from all things Lake, the laundry and showers, and the camp store. The store has a small menu of hot food offerings available, and the groceries surmount to things found at a gas station plus a few extras like bacon. While travelers should always buy where they burn to prevent introducing invasive bug species, buying wood right outside the park might be a smart choice; the bundles here are $10 each! Ice is $4.65+ for a small 7 lb bag. Showers are $1.75 (7 quarters) for 3 minutes. Many of the groceries are double normal prices. I didn’t dare to check their gas prices! The kayak and canoe rentals are more reasonable. Cabin packages with cook stove, etc, are no longer available with reservations—even though they are still advertised. If staying here for a bit, adventurers will have to drive through Chester to get to other points in the park, like the Devil’s Kitchen (a most beautiful hike). Chester has gas, grocery, hotels, more campgrounds, and some really great local eats. Also check out Drakesbad Ranch if comparing alternatives; we hiked by it on our outing to Devil’s Kitchen and it looks pretty neat.

Waking up to the sound of the wind in the braches of the tall pines, while feeling nothing more than a breeze down below, is a pleasant experience. The drive through Lassen Volcanic is stunning. Under the snow capped peak, wildflowers cascade down the mountainside to frolicking creeks and waterfalls. Emerald lake shines like a deep, green Emerald, and around the corner, Lake Helen is a sparkling Sapphire. The geothermal areas are always interesting and remind us of the forces behind this volcanic tower, and that Lassen is still active. All in all, a great place to car camp.
