Best Cabin Camping near Potter Valley, CA

Several cabin lodging options exist near Potter Valley, with Pine Mountain Lookout providing a unique experience in an old fire tower. This rustic cabin offers cots for sleeping and provides stunning views from its 180-degree windows. "It was such a unique experience staying at Pine Mountain Lookout. The tower is unique in that it only gives a 180º view rather than 360º which allows you stunning views of the sunset," notes one visitor. Narrows Lodge Resort offers more comfortable cabin accommodations with modern amenities including electric hookups, showers, and toilets. Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort features premium cabins with private hot tubs, while some properties like Old Train Caboose provide novel lodging experiences.

Most cabin rentals require advance reservations, particularly during summer months. Pine Mountain Lookout remains rustic with basic amenities and a clean outhouse. A camper wrote, "A simple, rustic cabin. As noted by others, it suffers from a little damage/neglect—many of the windows are boarded up—but it's an old fire lookout so we didn't expect a rental cabin atmosphere." Pet policies vary by location, with Narrows Lodge Resort and Pine Acres Blue Lake Resort both welcoming dogs. Hendy Woods State Park also offers pet-friendly cabin options in a serene redwood setting.

Visitors should come prepared with appropriate supplies for their cabin stay. Pine Mountain Lookout provides cots but requires guests to bring sleeping bags and food storage containers. As described in feedback on The Dyrt, "Keep your food up on the table at night--the mice are nocturnal visitors and will help themselves if you leave food on the counter." Most cabins include basic furnishings but may require guests to bring their own bedding, towels, and cooking supplies. Some resorts like Narrows Lodge Resort and Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort have on-site markets for basic provisions, while more remote locations require bringing all necessary supplies.

Westport Beach RV Park and Campground

    Great beach access.

We were lucky to get a site right next to the beach for our class B RV. This is a beautiful site along Highway 1.

PS if this site is full, there is a dry camp about a mile north on Highway one. It is right next to the remains of old Highway One and it’s called Oyster Point. It is a rustic grass lot with space between sites, but not much privacy.. There are picnic tables and fire rings. A couple of pit toilets are located around the site. There are about 45 campsites here. Sites here are on a first come basis and self registering. The photos included here are for oyster point.

    Hendy Woods State Park Campground

    Family Freindly Redwood Camping

Spacious sites with fire pit, wooden food box and picnic table. Potable water available at spigots along the roads every 3-4 campgrounds. The campground has restrooms with sinks (bring your own soap), flush toilets, coin operated showers. Campground ha easy access to hiking, swimming in the river, and wine tasting just up the road. There a local produce stands just up the road where you can expect to buy tasty Gravenstien apples if you visit in August! Mosquitoes are present so bring bug spray! If you forget anything, there is a Mom and Pop store up the road that sells almost everything you need including batteries, tableclothes, butane, ice and firewood for about $6 a bundle. The campground host sells firewood for $8 a bundle. Campsites are for 8 people maximum. Even with 8 people, we didn't feel cramped. Sites come with 2 parking passes. If you have more than two cars in your party, you can pay for additional parking passes. Dog friendly! I was the only person in my group to have cell service here and I have Verizon.

Manchester Beach / Mendocino Coast KOA

Delightful, quiet campground in the pines not far from Mendocino

Normally I wouldn't think of myself as a KOA sort of camper. This campground is enough to change my mind! There are some weekends you need to get away, but there's no time to pack the long list of stuff needed for camping. So we tried out one of these little cedar cabins. It was fantastic!!

We loved the quiet, laidback campground, with lovely old pines giving a sense of being in the forest -- even while being walking distance from the water. You're literally close enough to hear the surf, and see the Point Arena lighthouse.

It's dog friendly, with pool, hot tub, hot showers, full bathrooms, and also extensive Camp Kitchen facilities with sho-nuff gas grills.

    We absolutely plan to return!

    Jughandle Creek Farm

Perfectly secluded and right next to the beach.

Jughandle is a beautiful area between Mendocino and Fort Bragg. It contains excellent hiking, a beautiful beach, and even a Pygmy Redwood Forest. I booked it through Hipcamp and you could tell that was the majority of their campers.

We were able to score a site that was very secluded at the end of the road before the private property line. It was the perfect spot to set up two(or more) tents. There was a great fire ring and picnic table at the site.

A short less than a minute walk to the porta potty bathroom that is at the edge of a big field. In the field are two more sites on either side of the road and a large communal cooking area with a water source.

There is also a large fire ring with stump seats in case you want to have a gathering. The sites were pretty quiet even when they were all full and you were able to get to your site without distracting others too much.

There is a hiking path that takes you down to Jughandle Beach where you will find all kinds of tourists, animals, and great sand to play in or up to the pygmy redwood forest.

    Pine Mountain Lookout

    A Unique Experience

A simple, rustic cabin.  As noted by others, it suffers from a little damage/neglect—many of the windows are boarded up—but it's an old fire lookout so we didn't expect a rental cabin atmosphere.  Views are exceptional, as is the peace and quiet.  Get up early and you'll catch the dawn chorus of an amazing number of birds: warblers, woodpeckers, quail, juncos, grosbeaks, cowbirds, even robins.  The cabin is roughly outfitted with cots, bunkbeds, a table and chairs.  There's a clean outhouse down by where you park and a firepit, which we didn't use because it was windy when we were there.  Keep your food up on the table at night--the mice are nocturnal visitors and will help themselves if you leave food on the counter.  Only caveat is the access to the cabin.  They're not kidding when they warn you to bring a chainsaw.  Two of the three roads in and out were blocked by downed trees (so big our small chainsaw wasn't helpful), and in places the road that was open had pretty deep potholes and gullies formed by last winter's heavy rains.  I was really glad we had 4WD.

Guide to Potter Valley

Cabin camping near Potter Valley, California puts visitors in the heart of Mendocino County, where elevations range from 700 to 1,000 feet above sea level. The area experiences hot, dry summers with temperatures often exceeding 90°F, while winter brings cooler temperatures and rainfall averaging 40 inches annually. Most cabin accommodations require advance bookings at least 3-6 months ahead during peak summer season.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Clear Lake State Park's Kelsey Creek Campground offers lakefront cabin accommodations with easy access to fishing. "Great camping, hiking, boating. Lots of nature trails. Super friendly staff," notes a visitor who appreciated the lake access and variety of outdoor activities.

Wildlife observation: At cabin sites throughout the region, diverse wildlife viewing is common. "Get up early and you'll catch the dawn chorus of an amazing number of birds: warblers, woodpeckers, quail, juncos, grosbeaks, cowbirds, even robins," reports a visitor to Pine Mountain Lookout, highlighting the morning wildlife activity near cabin sites.

Wine tasting: Hendy Woods State Park Campground provides cabin options within 15 minutes of Anderson Valley wineries. "Anderson Valley is a Pinot Noir region so wineries surround the campground. Booneville is a cute nearby town with kid friendly Anderson Valley Brewery and Pennyroyal Cheese Farm," explains a camper who combined cabin stays with wine country exploration.

What campers like

Scenic lake views: Narrows Lodge Resort cabin guests praise the water views. "The views are absolutely amazing! We stayed in the Lakeview spot and had the entire place to ourselves during the week. It's definitely more of a summer stay but we enjoyed it in the fall just as much," reports one visitor, highlighting the advantage of off-peak stays.

Redwood immersion: Hendy Woods State Park cabins provide immediate access to old-growth redwoods. "Hendy woods is a sacred place I will always come back to. The old growth redwoods and rich diversity of plants and fungi really make this place stand out," shares an experienced camper who has visited multiple times, noting the exceptional plant diversity.

Rustic authenticity: Many visitors appreciate the historic character of cabin options. "The cabin is roughly outfitted with cots, bunkbeds, a table and chairs. There's a clean outhouse down by where you park and a firepit," describes a Pine Mountain Lookout visitor, detailing the basic amenities that maintain the authentic experience.

What you should know

Road conditions: Some cabin locations require traveling difficult roads. "They're not kidding when they warn you to bring a chainsaw. Two of the three roads in and out were blocked by downed trees, and in places the road that was open had pretty deep potholes and gullies formed by last winter's heavy rains. I was really glad we had 4WD," cautions a Pine Mountain visitor about access challenges.

Seasonal considerations: Manchester Beach / Mendocino Coast KOA cabins provide heated options during colder months. "Being so close to the beach though, it gets COLD at night. We usually rent a cabin. The cabins have heaters with is definitely nice," advises a regular visitor who appreciates the heating during coastal temperature drops.

Wildlife management: Campers should prepare for wildlife encounters. "This park was such a unique experience. There were signs that rattlesnakes are in the area, but didn't see or hear any," reports a cabin visitor, noting the need for awareness but not concern about local wildlife.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Mendocino Redwoods RV Resort offers premium cabin options with features specifically for children. "A paradise for kids. We stayed in one of the premium hot tub sites, where you get your very own hot tub. Highly recommend, my kids absolutely loved it and so did I! We were just a few steps from the pool," shares a family who enjoyed the resort amenities.

Educational opportunities: Clear Lake State Park cabins provide nearby educational resources. "There is also a visitors center with many displays of the animals that are found within the park as well the cultural history," notes a camper who took advantage of the learning opportunities available at the park.

Evening activities: Some resorts organize evening entertainment for families. "The park was designed for families. We were there for movie night. They had a big screen and showed a film for the kiddos," describes a visitor, highlighting organized activities that enhance family cabin stays.

Tips from RVers

Space considerations: Caspar Beach RV Park & Campground cabin options provide alternatives when RV spaces are tight. "Its a super cramped campground for big rigs. Much nicer and more privacy if tenting. The best spot is 'ocean view' but its time to change the name," advises an RVer who found the cabin options more comfortable than RV spots.

Seasonal availability: Thousand Trails Russian River has cabin options that remain open year-round. "The staff has been wonderful, no issues!" notes a recent visitor who stayed during a rehabilitation period, appreciating the accessibility and support during their extended cabin stay.

Utility limitations: Most cabin options have restricted utilities. "Spaces are all 30 amp with no sewer hookups. Many spaces are very narrow/tight and uphill from your neighbor," reports a visitor about the RV spaces, making cabins a more practical option for those concerned about hookup limitations.
