    Mount Madonna County Park

My favorite campground of the Monterey Bay

Mount Madonna County Park has 4 campgrounds. I've been camping in this park since the late 70s. I've seen some changes over the years...ahem...decades. There's something for everyone here, RVers, tenters, and those who want to rent tent cabins. There are plenty of trails to hike, as well as equestrian trails. No bikes on trails though.

There are several micro climates in this area and temps can vary, besides our weather varies from day to day.

There are trails offering views of the Santa Clara Valley, and trails offering views of the Monterey Bay. The park is above the fog line (most of the year). We don't get rain in the summer here. The park is situated at the County lines of Santa Clara County and Santa Cruz County and is part of the Santa Clara County Parks system.

No stores or markets in the park, but you can easily run into town, either Watsonville or Gilroy. It's slightly closer to Watsonville where you will find a gas station/market on 152 (Currently a Valero), or go into Gilroy on 152 for Safeway and more.

There's a small cabin (ranger's station) with a history exhibit and the white reindeer up from the kiosk. My favorite campground in the park is the Tan Oak campground at the top and through the day use area. There are plenty of Geocaches on the trails.

The bathrooms are generally clean. I say generally because I prefer the off season when I have the campground to myself and the bathrooms are super clean, but when the campground is full, like any public bathroom they can need more attention. (Or maybe people just need to clean up after themselves) I've never used the showers, nor the tent cabins. I like the sites because overall they are separated by trees so you don't feel as crowded as more open campgrounds.

Despite signage warning of mountain lions, I have never encountered a single one in all the years of camping here. I've had raccoons and skunks (so lock up your food and belongings), turkeys and deer.

Weekends, especially a holiday weekend such as Memorial Day weekend, can be full. (Not my favorite) I have also stayed for the 4th of July when it fell midweek and had the campground (Tan Oak) literally to myself.

Leashed pets are allowed (2 per site) and 2 cars and 8 people per site.

    Mount Madonna County Park

    Quiet and Comfortable

We had a HUGE campsite. Not sure of the number. The fire pit and picnic table were up near the camp road, but our site had a huge "dish" that was shaded by large trees where we pitched our tent. We camped in November, and it was cool, but not cold. It had been raining and things were damp, but we were comfortable with jackets and a fire in the evenings. Jackets came off during the sunniest part of the day. We did a short hike. Mostly, we stayed in our site and played tabletop games at the picnic table. We really so no other campers or park workers while we were in our site as it was quite secluded.

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Tower Park

Just what I was looking for!

I wanted somewhere not too far to go and stay when my 5-6 year-old had 5 days off from school. This was perfect in so many ways.

    Positives

    - Amenities! I love how everything was themed, from the street names to the signs. Two nice playgrounds, ball courts, pool and hot tub. Watching your kids play red light/green light on the jumping pillow put a smile on every parent's face.

    - Seasonal programming (weekends only). For October, we did an outdoor movie, magic pumpkins, costume contest, trick or treating, hay ride, and haunted house. My daughter loved everything except the haunted house, which she said was "too scary!"

    - Clean, comfortable facilities. Lots of ways to stay. We car camped and found the hook ups really easy to use. Water, drain, 3 types of electricity, picnic table and firepit at every site. We used their bathrooms and showers and was impressed by how clean they were. Most of the time we had them completely to ourselves and they were even climate controlled.

    - Restaurant. I cooked breakfast and lunch most days at the campsite, but for dinner we splashed out at the kid-friendly Waterfront Grille. Friendly staff, good food (lobster and prime rib, yum!), amazing views of the sunset.

    Negatives

    - Water park was closed. Call ahead to see if it is open when you want to go. I heard that it is never open because of some issue with permits or drought. If so, the promotional video is misleading and I almost deducted a star for this.

    - Expensive. For camping, it is expensive, but think of it more as a theme park/resort, than true camping. We saved on the cabin and RV, and spent on the optional activities and the fancy meals.

Bottom line, I would totally go back and stay as long as I could. I hear it is super crowded in the summer, but it would be worth it if the water park is open.

Del Valle Campground — East Bay Regional Park District

    A fun campsite

It’s a cozy place with boat rentals! Plenty of shade and bathrooms available. Only reason got 4 star is the constant blue-green algae, making the water unavailable for swimming. Regardless of that, you can still fish and go on boat rides.

Del Valle Campground — East Bay Regional Park District

    Very impressed!

Very happy with our first camping experience at Del Valle. Our campsite (#139) could have used some shade, but we had plenty of space and the views were awesome. Almost every site was occupied, but luckily everyone respected the quiet hours. The facilities were clean and well maintained. We didn’t interact with staff/rangers too much, but the few we did talk to were very friendly and helpful. We look forward to going back!

Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Tower Park

    Great for kids under 14

We go with several families with kids 5-13 and they all have a blast. The price per night is very expensive but there are a lot of amenities. Nice playground, basketball court, volleyball, bouncy pillow, outdoor movies, pool, lazy river, water park, bumper boats, laser tag, boat rentals on the delta, restaurants and quick bites. There is an ice cream shop, general store, and crafts some free some for purchase $7-$30. We went for Christmas in July and Santa was there for pictures, we go for Halloween and there is trick or treating through the whole place, a haunted house and a decor and costume contest. Our kids really enjoy the freedom to go play while the adults sit back and relax.

Del Valle Campground — East Bay Regional Park District

    Nice Campsites, Hot & Buggy

We stayed in Sites 78 & 80, which were enormous, and could’ve easily fit 20-30 people, not the 8 people the sites were limited too. Careful though, many sites, including these, were mostly exposed with very little shade. Camping Labor Day weekend, temps were in the low 90s, and there were LOTS of mosquitoes. Most people in our party came back with upwards of 20-30 bites, even with lots of bug spray, screened enclosures, and other precautions.

Campsite amenities were great, easy access to water and bathrooms. Bathrooms were spotless the whole weekend, even though it was a holiday weekend and every site was booked. Park staff came by each evening to invite us to programs at the amphitheater. A firewood truck drove by at least once a day. You can also make purchases at a little camp store (in a shipping container), plenty of ice and firewood, but we didn’t see any alcohol for sale.

Check the rules ahead of time, they are quite restrictive and very different from many other campgrounds. No hard alcohol? No hammocks? No entry after 10:00pm?

Also note, the lake isn’t really in walking distance. If you have a dog, you have to head to East Shore (~5 min drive) and the Dog Run trail to let them in the water. Be prepared for a steep scramble down to the lakeside, and very limited beach.

What to do

At Mount Madonna County Park, one camper observed: "In the morning it's raining under the redwood trees but not under the madrone or tan oak trees, which is wild." The park also features white fallow deer in pens near the ranger station, descendants from William Randolph Hearst's exotic zoo.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Mount Madonna County Park receives consistent praise for maintenance. "Bathrooms are constantly cleaned and showers are free and clean. Parking is free with paid camping," reports one visitor. The well-kept grounds create a more comfortable cabin camping experience.

Family amenities: Families appreciate the recreational options at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park. As one camper describes: "Lots of greats amenities for families. Lots of people however the park is huge and didn't feel like it was too busy." The park offers themed activities, playgrounds, water features, and organized events throughout the year.

Lakeside locations: The scenic water settings enhance cabin stays near Patterson. A Lake McSwain visitor shared: "We love McSwain. It is our go to camp ground in the area. It's close, clean and friendly. It's our thanksgiving weekend every year." The combination of water access and cabin comfort makes these locations particularly appealing during various seasons.

What you should know

Temperature variations: Cabin campers should prepare for significant temperature changes, especially at higher elevations. At Lake McSwain Recreation Area, a camper advised: "If you are staying in a tent make sure to layer up and bring lots of blankets because nights can get very cold." These temperature fluctuations affect cabin stays as well, particularly in properties with limited heating.

Limited connectivity: Cell service is inconsistent throughout cabin camping areas near Patterson. A visitor to Del Valle Campground noted the "lack of cell reception really helps the feeling of being away from the city life." Some properties offer limited connectivity at specific locations like entrance areas or camp stores.

Cabin furnishing levels: Furnishings vary significantly between properties. At Turner Cut Resort, a visitor described their stay as "very comfortable," while others noted more basic accommodations elsewhere. Most cabins include beds but require guests to bring linens, pillows, and personal items.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Schedule around specific park programming when booking cabin stays. A Casa de Fruta visitor noted: "The weekend I came there was a Renaissance Faire in the back and I've heard there are other fun festivities going on in the area, like the Garlic Festival, Strawberry Festival etc." Many parks offer seasonal events worth planning around.

Space considerations: Select cabin sites carefully for family comfort. At Thousand Trails Morgan Hill, a camper observed: "Cute place. Very large. The kids loved the resident cats. The pool was huge and well loved. Lots of recreation." Cabin size and proximity to amenities significantly impact family experiences.

Bathroom access: Check bathroom proximity when booking cabins for families. One Mount Madonna visitor reported their site had "a trail leading directly to the vast network of hiking trails. Huge bonus for us and we were pleasantly surprised that not one person used our site as a cut through." Site location relative to bathrooms and pathways affects privacy and convenience.

Tips from RVers

Hookup considerations: Many cabin areas also accommodate RVs with varying hookup options. At French Camp Recreational Vehicle Park, a visitor mentioned: "Really friendly and accommodating staff, clean park. Excellent experience." Properties with both cabin and RV options often share amenities, making mixed-group camping convenient.

Site variations: RV sites near cabins differ significantly in layout and size. A Mount Madonna camper noted: "Site 211 was listed as 30' trailer but that was definitely not the case as it was a weird triangle parking area. We made it work and enjoyed the park." Verifying site dimensions and configurations before arrival prevents surprises.

Seasonal considerations: Booking patterns differ between cabin and RV campers. At Lake McSwain, management "brought on staff to get us all checked in since it was so busy because of the race" during an off-season event. Cabin availability may increase during shoulder seasons when RV traffic decreases.
