    Middle Creek Campground

    Oh heaven or peaceful tranquility

Middle creek campground was as close as we could find to free camping in Upper Lake CA. At the time of our visit 90% of the Mendocino National Forest was closed as a result of fires the past year as well as landslides due to rains.this is normally a ohv area but since all trails are closed it is quiet and peaceful.you can hear the creek running along the camp, as well as the wild turkeys . There must be over 15 different species of birds as well. Each campsite has a picnic table , fire pit as well as a bbq grill. They do have vault toilets and running water. It was $8.00 a nite but offered a discount with a America the beautiful pass

    North Fork Campground

    Campground away from the Interstate

The North Fork campground is about 30 minutes off of Interstate 80 along a 1-2 lane paved road. The campground is next to the Truckee River but most sites do not have easy access to it.

There are only three pit toilets since one of them is permanently damaged and has been for quite some time. There is no running water or access to any electricity.

It is is a small to medium size campground which is a plus and it’s in the trees.

    Middle Creek Campground

    Great place for dry camping

Beautiful location, campground was easily accessible going up Elk Mountain Road. Camped in Site 11, pull through, no hook ups, nice picnic table, grill and fire pit. Vault toilets, no showers. There is potable water close to the campsites. Very quiet during the week, it did get noisier on the weekends, but everyone settled down for the evening.

    Fuller Grove Group Campground

    Great memories

I have been camping here for 20 years and have always had a great time. Camp sites are spaced out, so you're not on top of one another like some of the other sites around the lake. Also has a nice beach and direct access to the lake. Campground hosts change from year to year and have been good people. Since Lake Pillsbury is more secluded compared to Lake Mendocino, it tends to get a lot less traffic from campers (except around holidays). People who come are generally experienced campers or families on vacation and not 20-somethings looking to party. Noise normally isn't an issue, even when all the sites are full. Bring your own seat gaskets and toilet paper though. No seat gaskets are provided in the vault toilets, and the toilet paper is sometimes just 1-ply.

The Parkway RV Resort & Campground

Great Place to stop on I-5

We needed a place to camp for the night, and Parkway was in the right location.  We booked through the Dyrt, but the campground's booking site was almost as easy.  We needed to move our reservation to one night earlier, and the camp staff graciously made it happen.  When we arrived, the sites were clean and orderly, and there was actually grass and level parking spots.  The full hookups worked great and it turned out to be just what we needed.  We also found a local panaderia for breakfast pastries that were delicious.  This was exactly what we needed.

    Great for RVs

Ample drive thru rv sites that are shaded by huge trees and surrounded by spacious fields of grass. Lots of room between sites. Access to Sacramento River and hiking trails a short distance away. Water spigots scattered thru out the campground. Stayed on a Monday and it was quiet and not very busy.

The Parkway RV Resort & Campground

    Great place for stopover

We found this site via the Dyrt app. We stayed one night, in an very hot week. We really appreciated the pool, the very friendly staff and clean restrooms. Note that the pull through sites have some shade, but the gravel is a small heat island, so it takes long to cool down in a camper van without AC.

The Parkway RV Resort & Campground

    Great Stop of I-5

Stayed here for a second time driving from Southern California to Oregon. The sites are spacious and there is a pool to cool down during the hot summers. There is wine tasting as well. Management kept in communication with us through text (my preferred method). Easy access to I-5, very close to a Pilot for larger rigs. Definitely somewhere I plan to stay on my journeys through California.

The Parkway RV Resort & Campground

    Nice quiet RV park

I have stayed here several times as a waypoint on my travels between California to Washington. It is a nice safe quiet park that has many pull through spaces for RVs spending the night. I have used their website to reserve a space and then pick up the paperwork outside the door of their office. so far I haven’t met any of the owners or staff but all the hook ups work and I believe they have Wi-Fi as well.

Guide to Black Butte Lake

Glamping close to Black Butte Lake offers access to outdoor recreation in Northern California's Sacramento Valley region. Summer temperatures typically reach the high 90s, with cooler nights in spring and fall. The area features oak woodlands transitioning to grasslands near the 4,000-acre reservoir, with several campgrounds offering both traditional and upscale camping options within a 30-mile radius.

What to do

Water recreation at Black Butte Lake: Fishing, boating, and swimming are primary activities at the reservoir. "Beautiful sites and friendly staff," notes a visitor at Mendocino National Forest Lake Red Bluff Recreation Area, highlighting the lake access points for water activities.

Stargazing opportunities: The dark skies around Black Butte Lake create ideal conditions for night sky viewing. A camper at Fuller Grove Group Campground recommends "late-night stargazing" at the campground beach where light pollution is minimal.

Wildlife viewing: The area supports diverse bird species and wildlife. One camper at Middle Creek Campground observed "wild turkeys" and "over 15 different species of birds" during their stay, making it worthwhile to bring binoculars.

What campers like

Quiet location away from highways: Despite proximity to I-5, many campgrounds offer peaceful settings. "You are minutes from I-5 but it is impossible to hear the traffic," writes a camper about Red Bluff Recreation Area, noting "remarkably dark" skies.

Spacious sites with natural features: "The sites are BIG, and the ones that lead to the water give you best access to the lake," says a visitor at Fuller Grove Group Campground, appreciating the layout that prevents crowding.

Convenient location for travel breaks: Many campers use the area as a stopover. A guest at The Parkway RV Resort & Campground noted it serves as "a nice quiet spot for a stop over" when traveling through Northern California.

What you should know

Limited facilities at some locations: Amenities vary widely between established resorts and public campgrounds. A Middle Creek Campground visitor warns: "This campground is dry... It's got dropped toilets and it has potable water. Problem is that the spigots don't have any hose fittings, so you can't hook up."

Seasonal considerations: High summer temperatures affect comfort levels. "It's HOT so plan accordingly. There's limited shade," cautions a visitor at North Fork Campground, suggesting spring or fall visits for milder conditions.

Reservation requirements: Most glamping sites require advance booking. At Rolling Hills Casino Truck Lot, a camper shared their experience: "Made a reservation 44 minutes before arriving. Quick check in. Great for overnight."

Tips for camping with families

Accessible swimming spots: Look for designated swimming areas with gradual entry points. "Great fishing, swimming and boating area," comments a visitor about Eel River Campground, noting a "5 min walk to swimming hole" that's suitable for children.

Sites with multiple tent pads: Some campgrounds accommodate larger family groups. At Fuller Grove, a camper mentioned that "some of the sites far from the entrance and along the water are very nice with multiple pads and tables," ideal for family camping with several tents.

Entertainment options: Consider campgrounds with additional attractions nearby. A family at Rolling Hills noted: "We had our dogs and 5 year old with us... We all enjoyed a meal at the steak house. After we let mama gamble as my daughter and I enjoyed the arcade."

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Check specific site utilities before booking. At The Parkway RV Resort, a reviewer mentioned: "Clean and convenient. Full hookups worked great and it turned out to be just what we needed."

Level sites: Terrain varies throughout the region. A Middle Creek camper reported: "Camped in Site 11, pull through, no hook ups, nice picnic table, grill and fire pit," suggesting specific sites for easiest RV setup.

Space between sites: Look for roomier campgrounds to accommodate slide-outs. Rolling Hills offers "level 75 ft pull through sites," according to one RVer who appreciated the generous spacing, adding they "will stay again."
