Madesi Campground

PG&E operates Madesi Campground along the Pit River, accessible by both road and water. The facility sits at the end of a winding route that transitions from pavement to gravel as it approaches the river. An ADA-compliant fishing platform extends over the water, making this spot popular with boaters and kayakers using it as a launch point.

The campground features vault toilets and allows both pets and alcohol. Campers often find themselves alone at this utility company site, which serves as a quiet base for exploring the Big Bend area. The combination of road and boat access makes it versatile for different camping styles, from car camping to paddling adventures along the Pit River system.

A surprise find.....and PERFECT

First day out on the Tiger for a lap of Idaho & Montana and I see there might be a hot spring near the town of Big Bend.  A great little twisty road from 299 to Big Bend put a smile on my face.  Heading southeast from the town, a bit of pavement & a bit of gravel, I found this PG&E camp right on the Pit River.  Complete with a beautiful, clean vault toilet and ADA fishing platform, this is a spot boaters/kayakers put in/out.   I had the place to myself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What amenities are available at Madesi Campground?

Madesi Campground is a basic PG&E campground with limited amenities. The site offers primitive camping facilities suitable for those looking for a more rustic outdoor experience. There may be standard campsite features like fire rings and picnic tables, though specific amenities aren't extensive. The main attraction is the natural setting and possible proximity to a hot spring in the Big Bend area. The campground's appeal lies more in its location and surrounding environment than in developed facilities.

Where is Madesi Campground located and how do I get there?

Madesi Campground is located near the town of Big Bend in Northern California, managed by PG&E. To get there, take Highway 299 to the Big Bend area, then follow a twisty road that branches off from Highway 299 heading toward the town of Big Bend. From Big Bend, head southeast on a combination of paved and gravel roads to reach the campground. The route includes some scenic driving, making the journey enjoyable. The campground is situated in a beautiful area that makes it worth the drive.

Do I need reservations for Madesi Campground?

Madesi Campground appears to operate on a first-come, first-served basis with no formal reservation system. As a smaller PG&E campground, it likely doesn't participate in online booking platforms. During peak seasons or weekends, arriving early is recommended to secure a spot. For the most current information about potential reservation policies, contact PG&E's recreation department or check their official website before your trip. The campground's relatively remote location may mean it's less crowded than more popular destinations.
