Lots of dispersed sites on this road. Quite a few sites occupied closer to the road's east entrance. The further down the road you drive, the rougher the road is. Stayed overnight in the camping area just beyond the dam. Beautiful forest. No amenities, okay cell service. People could do better picking up after themselves, though--some noticeable trash at the sites. Not too much traffic during our stay.
Even ground, fairly quiet, decent stargazing. Definitely cold overnight for mid April.
I enjoy coming here a couple days to get away from hustle & bustle of city life. It’s quiet, beautiful and temp is perfect but no amenities, nothing very barren most places have fire pits. There’s borough dam but can not camp within 1/4 mile of it. Though next time I need to be more prepared. I don’t have a refrigerator so back in town for more ice.
Great experience, great camping spots. Although you need to make your own fire pit. When we were there there was a very loud group. Almost like an outside club happening. Music didn’t stop until 3 am then started again at 6 am.
Went here over Labor Day weekend and really enjoyed it. The road from the I-17 entrance was well maintained and can be driven on with any vehicle. I had my Chevy trax (front wheel drive) and made it fine. There are plenty of pull off trails we explored. Some of them you’d definitely need a high clearance vehicle to drive down, but plenty you don’t. Lots of fallen trees so if you have a chain saw, all the fire wood you need. It gets windy up there often but in our tucked in spot, it didn’t really bother us. Exact cords of pic 34.88807, -111.68092
easy to navigate! i arrived past midnight and only had to drive 3/4 mile from the i-17 to find a spot! ive heard that the west (sedona) entrance is way rockier, but from the i-17 it was very easy to drive and i have a 30 year old car. very peaceful at nights, all you hear are distant cars and the occasional airplane, plus most spots come with a firepit for you! a lot of groups here but not noisy at all and we all have our space and peace, very safe and family oriented in my opinion :3
I went on a Sunday and there was hardly anybody there. So many spots to choose from and lots of wildlife. It was beautiful. Easy drive-in.
Love this site but I highly recommend getting to it via route 17 unless you are very comfortable with off-roading. If you come from Sedona this is the route the pink Jeep tours use and there is a ton of traffic! The one and only time we came from that side the only other vehicles on that part of the trail were the pink jeeps. But it’s beautiful quiet and fun
This area is right off I-17 and easy to find. The road isn’t too rough but be careful in the rain, could get stuck easily. I drove up past the old damn and found a camp spot easy that already had a fire ring. I camped in my Tesla and it did great. I didn’t explore the area too much because this was a one night stop over between wine tasting in Cottonwood and Sedona. Lots of 4 wheelers driving around. Lots of tree cover and its at about 6,000 ft at least so its nice and cool at night.
I took the exit off of i17, and it was a super easy drive in for my very old Outback! After a few miles you will hit the aggressive portion of the road, but it is very clear and easy to turn around before you hit that point. Lots of sites where you can drive pretty far into the forest and avoid the noise from early morning ATVs. Saw a few established fire rings, but some spots don't have any (plus fire restrictions in Flag right now basically prevent any fires as is). Great tree cover all over which helps with wind and sun. I have camped here multiple times but most recently this past May.
I took I 17 as the directions stated. Lots of spots that had existing fire rings. I used my propane fire pit since there were fire restrictions. If you drive down Schnebly hill road there a plenty of sites. After about 6 miles on a dirt road you will reach the schnebly hill overlook. The road gets a lot rougher from here. I didn’t go further from here. The site we stayed at wasn’t far from the exit on I17. The sky was beautiful. I would definitely stay here again.
Camping in Payson was absolutely breathtaking. I would recommend camping anywhere around Payson any day!
I came from route 17 and camped 2.1 miles farther down the road than the gps coordinates here. I saw some nice forested sites along the way. Beyond my location got VERY rocky, like, larger rocks sticking up all over the place, and I’m traveling alone, so I stopped here. I have a Subaru Forester. If I had more intense tires I would have gone just a little bit farther and you get some truly beautiful spots. (It seems like you get some of the nicer views on the drive if you come up from Sedona but I don’t know how the road is.) But it was a quick walk away to see the sunrise. Quiet and peaceful, my closest neighbors that I know of were over a mile away.
An epic campsite. Schnebly Hill Rd. was a bit bumpy but was nothing but an amazing experience with aired down Gladiator. We saw tons of all wheel drive driving up to the Merry-go-round. After passing the Schnebly Hill Vista overlook where you can start seeing some dispersed campsites, we went up the road for about 1 mile or so and found an amazing campsite overlooking the Sedona red rock mountains!!! Sunset from there was just a breathtaking and stars at night were sparkling clear and shiny. Very quiet until 8 am when you start to see Polaris every now and then. A must to go campsite! You won’t regret it!
I arrived late in the evening and left in the morning. It was a nice place to make a quick stop. There were some ATVs in the area and some traffic on the road from construction vehicles. Pretty close to the highway but I wasn’t bothered by noise. The spots that I saw near the start of the road looked spacious and lightly forested with a good amount of room between neighbors. Easy to get to, close to the highway, accessible to all vehicle types, and quiet enough.
This is a nice spot, but just up the road, you have amazing views!! The higher campsite is worth the extra 10 minutes on the gravel road.
It was your typical dispersed camping experience at ~6500 feet. Pine trees. Cool nights. Beautiful place. Schnebly Hill seems like a campground more geared toward off-roaders though. We saw at least 40 ATVs, Polaris, quads, etc...and we were only there for 24 hours. The Foxboro Lake was bone dry but the dam was still neat to check out. About 15 minutes north is Munds Park and Pinewood...go there for an even more off the beaten path experience. It was pleasant but I wouldn't recommend if you're really looking to get away from PEOPLE. Its a great outdoors spot if you just want some fresh air mountain vibes. PS - Please bury your toilet paper after wiping and while you're at it bury your poop! Ladies, we dont like to see tampon applicators left in the wild. Be better humans in the wild PLEASE!
Exit 226 off of I-17 and head west on Schnebly Hill Rd. There is dispersed camping all along the road for the first mile or two. It is first come first serve. This is a dirt road and on the weekends there are a lot of off road vehicles and they will not hesitate to drive right through your campsite if they want to get somewhere. We ended up blocking the trail that the off-roaders kept taking with a fallen tree and our teardrop camper to keep them out. That might have been a jerk move but it was crappy to have them drive through and kick up dust at all hours.
After that was taken care of, we had a nice time. The little pond was full of water, lots of wild life, camp fires were aloud, plenty of trees for hammocks, lots of hiking trails, space for group camping.
I did have some hitchhiking spiders when I got home.
