    USA RV Park

    Dirt Sites with Some Amenities

Not much here to write home about, but this park does offer a small, enclosed dog park, pool, a small grocery in their office building, and a “cookout” concession stand like you would find at a theme park or stadium. Their stage was being used to display a patriotic homage to the US military. No pets allowed in the amenities area. Room for improvement would be adding trees and cactus appropriate to this climate to beautify the park, because it’s pretty barren. Staff did not wear masks indoors during the rising Covid pandemic.

    Overnight near interstate

I booked this park months out- needed a place to stay on our way home from AZ. We left the Grand Canyon in the morning and stopped in Gallup to sleep before heading to Petroglyph NM the next morning. The staff member at the entry was very efficient, friendly, and informative. Our site was toward the back of the property- so we didn’t hear any road noise. The park was probably around 3/4 full on the Monday night we stayed- but it was pretty quiet. There was a pet area with a cinder block “fence” and several people walked dogs around in the park. I wanted to take a peek at the pool- so I picked up my 6 lb dog to walk into that area to see it and a lady quickly intercepted me and said dogs couldn’t be in that area. The pool looked decent from what I could see. The cell signal seemed strong from the indicators on our devices but I guess due to the number of users in the area, we had slow service. We tried the park’s WiFi but it was too slow to do much. Our site was mostly level so we used our small curved levelers on one side. The sites are VERY close together and many of the picnic tables seem to need new boards for seats.

    Cottonwood Campground

    Basic Campground

This campground has around 50 sites, about half of which are large enough for camper drive-in. Facilities include clean bathrooms with running water. The sites are pretty close together for my liking, but this is a nice, cheap campground for an overnight stop.

    Quaking Aspen Campground

    Wonderful primitive campsite

Campsites well maintained with a grill and firepit on each one. All seem pretty level. We were here in August and it was pleasantly cool. Also plenty of firewood. No running water but there’s an outhouse toilet that’s clean enough and a dumpster for waste. Currently their payment system is broken so it’s free! I only took one star off because the sites are all pretty exposed to each other. About 20ish sites and only 4 were taken but there wasn’t one that wasn’t visible by at least 2 of the other sites being used.

Gallup’s a great stop & a big pride in ownership campground

The place was pretty backed when we finally rolled in at 9pm! My latest arrival and hopefully the only time we arrive so late. The kids were thrilled to learn the pool was open another hour after the long long drive we had today. The check in was quick and the staff very polite & helpful. The grounds are well cared for and lots of amenities such as an on-site BBQ, free coffee in the morning. Pool. Outdoor chess, beautiful fountains, wonderful kids playground. I’d definitely make Gallup a stop over in the future.

The cleanest park we’ve been to yet. Showers, bathroom and laundry are spotless as well the campground itself. The owners daughter was extremely helpful and friendly as she checked us in. The store on site is pretty large. We will definitely come back!

    Nice RV Park

Had everything we needed plus more. Heated pool with American Flag inlaid. Veteran theme. Nice area to hike is the creek bed joust off the doggie walk area. Heated pool is no turned off for the winter. Over 100 sites, most pull through.

Guide to Fort Defiance

Camping near Fort Defiance, Arizona offers options from rustic tent sites to family-friendly RV parks. Fort Defiance sits at 6,800 feet elevation, experiencing cooler temperatures than surrounding desert areas with summer highs typically reaching 85°F. Winter camping requires preparation for below-freezing nighttime temperatures, especially at higher elevation sites in the Zuni Mountains.

What to do

Hiking to canyon views: At Cottonwood Campground, visitors can access both North and South Rim drives. "This is a great central location to both the north and south canyon road," notes Christine Z. The campground serves as an ideal base for exploring Canyon de Chelly National Monument.

Horseback tours: Arrange guided canyon access with local operators near Cottonwood Campground. "We road horses with Justin's Horses, and it is really close too," says ann M., who visited during Memorial Day weekend when the campground still had available spots despite the holiday.

Mountain biking trails: The Zuni Mountains offer excellent terrain for mountain biking enthusiasts. "Amazing hiking and mtb'ing trails. And, a nice lake," reports Tommy B. about Quaking Aspen Campground, which serves as a great starting point for trail access.

Canyon floor explorations: Access to Canyon de Chelly's floor requires either a guided tour or hiking the White House Trail. "Don't miss the hike down into the canyon to see the White House (named after the large cliff dwelling ruin cut into white rock)," suggests Craig J. The canyon features red cliffs surrounding pastures maintained by Navajo residents.

What campers like

Affordable stays: Budget-conscious travelers appreciate the value at several campgrounds. "A heated pool and playground, creating a family-friendly glamping environment" can be found at some locations. "They had all of the amenities I wanted, showers clean bathrooms, lots of pull through sites, and a pool. Just a mile off of I-40. I thought it was very well priced," shares Mike F. about USA RV Park.

Spacious campsites: Quaking Aspen Campground offers unusually large sites. "Small campground with massive campsites. This campground could easily squeeze double, if not triple, the sites out of these woods, but someone decided to let everyone breath a little here," writes Chip, noting the quiet atmosphere and stargazing opportunities.

Cool temperatures: Higher elevation campgrounds provide relief from summer heat. "The elevation at which the cg is at is 8000' makes for cool days and nic crisp cool nights, even in the summertime," reports Charles V. This makes glamping near Fort Defiance, Arizona comfortable even during warmer months.

Local expertise: Campground owners often provide valuable information about the area. "Howard the owner is very friendly and a wealth of information," notes Francois T. about Spider Rock Campground, which features a hiking trail from the campground directly to the canyon.

What you should know

Seasonal water availability: Water access varies by season at many campgrounds. "Water refill station was closed for the winter," notes Teresa A. about Cottonwood Campground. Plan to bring adequate water supplies, especially during colder months.

Limited cell service: Despite indicator bars showing signal strength, actual service may be slow. "The cell signal seemed strong from the indicators on our devices but I guess due to the number of users in the area, we had slow service. We tried the park's WiFi but it was too slow to do much," reports Susan R.

Wildlife considerations: The region has diverse wildlife requiring appropriate precautions. "We saw abundant wildlife while working in the Zunis, including several brown bears, deer, and elk. While we didn't have any run ins with these guy in camp, be aware that large animals are present in the area and be sure to take necessary bear-proofing precautions," advises Tyler G. about Quaking Aspen Campground.

Navajo Nation regulations: Special rules apply on tribal lands. "This is Navajo Nation and there is no alcohol or marijuana use allowed," reminds Laura M. Respecting cultural guidelines is essential when glamping near Fort Defiance.
