Eklutna Lake Campground is situated within Chugach State Park, about 26 miles northeast of Anchorage. The glacier-fed lake sits at approximately 868 feet elevation and spans roughly 7 miles in length, surrounded by the Chugach Mountains. Winter temperatures can drop below 0°F, while summer averages 55-75°F with extended daylight hours.
What to do
Mountain biking on multi-use trails: The trail system at Eklutna Lake Campground extends along the lakeside with options for riders of all skill levels. "My favorite place near Anchorage. Perfect for biking, hiking, kayaking, or camping. Amazing views everywhere," notes Bart R.
Wildlife observation opportunities: Early mornings and evenings provide the best viewing times for local wildlife. "This is a great place to see bears! Moose.... Foxes. The waters are clear and the landscape is so lush," reports Carly S.
Kayaking on glacier-fed waters: Rentals are available seasonally for exploring the lake. The calm waters make this accessible for beginners while offering enough space for experienced paddlers. "Glacier-fed, the water is COLD, but my dogs jumped right in anyway. The hiking around the Lake is great. Kayaking on the Lake is great fun too," shares Vicki S.
What campers like
Spacious, forested campsites: The campground layout provides privacy between sites with natural vegetation buffers. "I love when the sites still feel like they are in the forest. Great place," explains Sara K. from Eklutna Lake Campground.
Family-friendly beach access: The lakeshore areas provide safe places for children to play. "Camp ground was spacious and very quite. It was a rainy and windy weekend and we still had fun. Rode our bikes down the lake side trial, people were nice and respectful. Also the dogs and kids love playing on the beach," notes Sara H.
Well-maintained facilities: The campground offers basic amenities that campers appreciate. "Tons of campsites to choose from both double, single and handicapped. First come, first served. Fire rings, tables, restrooms, firewood for purchase ($15) and camp host," explains Shadara W.
What you should know
Insect preparation essential: Summer months bring significant mosquito activity, particularly near water. "There are a ton of flies though in the summer. Especially next to all this water. Mosquitos are aggressive at night," warns Carly S. from Resurrection Pass Trail North.
Weather variability: Conditions can change rapidly, even in summer months. Rain gear and layers are recommended year-round. "It was a rainy and windy weekend and we still had fun," reports Sara H.
Food storage requirements: Proper bear-safe food storage is mandatory. "This is a great place to see bears," reminds Carly S., making appropriate food management critical for safety.
Tips for camping with families
Choose walk-in tent sites with food lockers: These specialized sites provide added security for families concerned about wildlife. "Two sets of walk in tent sites with food lockers also available. Well water available too," notes Shadara W.
Twin Peaks trail considerations: While rewarding, this trail presents challenges for young hikers. "Twin peaks is a fun hike but pretty steep for kids. The view is worth the hike but be prepared," advises Samantha M. from Eklutna Lake Campground.
Bring bicycles for lakeside exploration: The flat terrain along the lake provides ideal riding for children. "This would be a great location to have a bicycle," suggests Samantha M.
Tips from RVers
Double campsite availability: Larger RV units should reserve double sites when available. "Tons of campsites to choose from both double, single and handicapped," notes Shadara W.
Limited hookup options: While the campground can accommodate RVs, full hookups are not available. Campers should arrive with full water tanks and empty waste tanks for extended stays.
Nearby amenities access: Services are available a short drive from the campground. "Just down the way u can take showers, do laundry & get some killer home made Alaskan flavored ice cream," shares Barbara W.
