Owl Creek Horse Camp, situated in Bankhead National Forest, serves as a trailhead to 22 miles of trails in Sipsey Wilderness. This primitive equestrian campground consists of a large field surrounded by loblolly pines with year-round potable water, pit toilets, and picnic tables. Campers pay $5 nightly or $3 for day use, accessing the site via unpaved forest roads that can be challenging during wet weather. The location provides strategic access to multiple horse trails throughout the wilderness.
What to do
Explore backcountry sites: The Sipsey Wilderness Backcountry Site offers hiking opportunities through protected wilderness terrain. "Sipsey Wilderness is a protected but unmaintained area in Northwest Alabama that is well known for its intersecting creeks, streams, and rivers that play together with the many waterfalls and magical rock faces," according to Asher K.
Creek exploration: Water features provide recreational activities beyond trail riding. At Red Coach Resort, visitors can wade through waterways with historical significance. "A beautiful large creek runs through it, with miles of walking paths, a horse barn, and spaces to play and relax. Did I mention fossils? All over the place some of the oldest creatures to crawl the earth are there for you to find! I'm not kidding we saw trilobites everywhere along the creek," reports Bruce G.
Seasonal activities: Trail conditions and water levels vary significantly by season throughout the Sipsey Wilderness. "Different times of year provide completely different experiences whether its the exciting and boundless blooms of spring, the overgrown wild of summer, the bold and expansive colors of fall, or the high river levels and easy boating access of winter," notes Asher K.
What campers like
Direct trail access: Horseback riders appreciate convenient trail connectivity. "The major advantage to this site is its access to the horseback riding trails," shares Asher K. about Owl Creek Horse Camp.
Communication capabilities: Cell service availability distinguishes some sites from others in this remote area. "We enjoyed staying here after being out of cell service for a few days at brushy lake, so we were able to catch up and coordinate our next destination," explains Gregg G., noting "2 bars of Verizon 4G LTE" at Owl Creek Horse Camp.
Water accessibility: Faye Whittemore Farms offers reliable water sources both for horses and humans. "The campground is very nice and woodsy. The campsites have water and electric hookups. They have nice paddocks for your horses," explains Belinda H.
What you should know
Trail conditions: Mountain biking is possible but challenging on primarily equestrian-focused paths. "We rode our bikes, the trails are more geared for the equestrian rider, but was friendly enough for bikes," reports Gregg G. about trails accessible from Owl Creek Horse Camp.
Water level fluctuations: River activities require timing with rainfall patterns. "Several sites online suggested over 4 feet gauge height would be fine but after talking to the Rangers we were told the only time that it was really navigable was in the winter or fall for a couple of days after a major rainfall," cautions Asher K. about Sipsey River.
Site selection considerations: Backcountry camping requires strategic placement. "This site is nice because it is level and removed from the water enough that there is no concern of flooding. This site does have less privacy though so take that into account," advises Asher K. about backcountry sites.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Red Coach Resort provides designated play areas for children. "We really enjoyed all of the trees and being able to take the kids to play in the small creek in the back of the property. They have a nice playground and a koi pond with a little deck to sit on," shares Lizzy S.
Water activities: Creek access offers natural entertainment for younger campers. "There are large spaces in the woods only minutes from Huntsville. A quiet piece of heaven. A beautiful large creek runs through it, with miles of walking paths," notes Bruce G.
Bathroom facilities: Campgrounds vary significantly in restroom availability. Some sites like Faye Whittemore Farms offer more amenities than wilderness locations. "Clean washrooms and near campsite. Not too far from town," reports Adrienne D.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: For equestrian camping with modern conveniences, certain campgrounds offer full services. "The campground is very nice and woodsy. The campsites have water and electric hookups," confirms Belinda H. about Faye Whittemore Farms.
Space considerations: RV sites offer varying degrees of privacy and space. "There are large spaces in the woods only minutes from Huntsville," notes Bruce G. about Red Coach Resort, adding "We have a 44 ft DRV and with a little care were easily able to get around."
Connectivity challenges: Mobile data can be inconsistent throughout the region. "We did have poor coverage for our mobile data but the phones and texting always worked," reports Bruce G., highlighting connectivity limitations even at developed campgrounds.
