      Monte Sano State Park Campground

Some much fun so close to home

Although we have been to Monte Sano many times to hike and attend events, this was our first time camping here. Monte State Park Campground is a large campground with 15 full hookup sites, 59 water& electric sites, and 21 primitive tent sites. All the sites are gravel, most sites are wooded with lots of shade, and most site are mainly level. All style sites include a picnic table and fire ring.

Check-in is at the camp store if you arrive during store hours or with camp host if you arrive after hours. We stayed on site 24, which had complete shade throughout the day. This site backs up to a draw and each evening just before dust we could watch the deer walk up through.

The bathhouse is centrally located, newer, and cleaned daily. There are also laundry machines available between the men’s and women’s area.

Firewood, ice, limited grocery items, and souvenirs were available at the camp store. There is a full grocery store about 15 minutes away.

We found ok to limited cell phone service with Verizon throughout the property. The state park did have wi-fi near the camp store.

The park has many trails for hiking and mountain biking, as well as host the North Alabama Japanese Garden. The North Alabama Land Trust also connects to the state park and adds many more miles of trails. We hiked about 15 miles this weekend and there are many more miles to explore on another visit.

The state park is located 5 minutes from Huntsville where you can find many restaurants, breweries, and the Space& Rocket Center. Check the Huntsville visitor’s center website for all that is offered in the area. In addition, the Burritt on the Mountain located just minutes from the park entrance and has an open air museum and an amazing overlook of Huntsville.

We are very excited that this gem is located so close to use and are proud to call this our home camp!

      Great camping

Wonderful place to camp!!! Most sites include view of lake Guntersville. Several things to do here... Mountain bike, hike, fish, beach with volleyball, golf. Deer usually visit the campground several times a day. Take time to drive up the mountain to the Lodge and take in the great views. Friendly staff, clean bathrooms and showers.

      Lake Guntersville State Park Campground

      Primitive campsites at the water

We chose a primitive site for a quieter camping night. Although the furthest away from a bathhouse, we truly enjoyed this site. It’s “pick your own” and we picked the site next to Seals hiking trail along the water. Each site has a fire pit and is mostly level. No table, so bring your own. No water spigot so make sure you have your own. Beautiful location with amazing sunsets.

      Monte Sano State Park Campground

Nice campground with nice hiking trails

When I called Saturday morning to check on availability for that evening, I was told only primitive sites were available which would have been ok for a one night stay but upon arrival, we were told you had to pitch a tent for the primitive sites (we don’t have a tent and sleep in our van). However, a number of improved sites had opened up so we were in luck. All sites are gravel and appear to be fairly level and ours was likely the most level we’ve been in for awhile. Picnic table and fire ring at each site. Many families with young children (fun to watch them ride their bikes around the loop). Bathhouse was clean and I appreciated the HOT water! Coin laundry. The North Alabama Japanese garden is a nice short walk and there are a variety of hiking trails (I would recommend the Stone Cut Trail for a moderately challenging hike).

      Monte Sano State Park Campground

      Beautiful area in Alabama

We camped here last weekend for the first time. The area is really beautiful and the park has a little Japanese garden, which is definitely worth to visit.

We stayed at one of the primitive campsites. They have a fire pit, but no picnic table, which didn't bother us. The sites are very big and private, but unfortunately our site had some trash laying around.

The bathrooms were just a short walk away, but also, pretty dirty and some of them had no toilet paper since Saturday afternoon.

It is just a short drive to Huntsville, which is really nice and fun to explore.

      Wills Creek RV Park

Quiet country campground with easy access, on-site RV Tech available

We were placed in the new addition of the park, where the sites were very tight and the utility hookups where in a strange position (the neighbors' utilities actually were under our awning when extended).  The turn at the end of the new sights was a bit sharp if you have a long rig.  The sights weren't particularly level, all gravel and the grass appeared hastily sown over unleveled soil with large clumps of clay and rocks present.  You had to watch where you walked to avoid twisting an ankle.  The Laundry/Shower facilities were quite a distance from where we were camped, luckily, we had our golf cart to make the trek when needed.

On the plus side, the office staff and the on-sight tech were particularly helpful.  The park is near Desoto State Park and Little River Canyon National preserve, and the Alabama (band) museum.  We were there for the start of the fall colors changing and the views were awesome!

      Honeycomb Campground

Plenty good enough for a long weekend

We visited Honeycomb a few days before Thanksgiving and had a good time.

PROs: • Beautiful views from lakefront sites • not crowded, very quiet in mid-November • hard packed gravel pad was level left-to-right, no leveling blocks under tires needed • easy driving distance to lots of local activities/attractions

CONs: • only one working bathroom/shower house…could be an issue when the campground is crowded considering their are no sewage hookups on site • sites are pretty close together, not much room for outdoor family activities • WIFI (extra charge) was very inconsistent

      Lake Guntersville State Park Campground

      Going up

Lake Guntersville State Park, Guntersville, Al

We visited Lake Guntersville State Park for, you guessed it, a Trail Run event! This is an old school state park with a lodge and campground. They have incorporated new school though by adding a zip line area next to the lodge.

Then you have the lake, the Tennessee River runs through Lake Guntersville , (from the Ohio River, through Decatur, Al to Chattanooga , Tn) so a float trip through the area would be feasible with at least one over night stop at the Lake Guntersville Campground which is right on the lake.

The campground is spread across a wide area, not much shade though. Not a lot of privacy, you are gonna see a lot of your next site neighbor. The sites are not huge, however they are large enough to set up base camp for your outdoor activities. Open year round. The showerhouse was heated and maintained, not horror movie scary at all.

Directly across from the campground entrance is a trailhead that goes UP the “hill” to the lodge and a pretty sweet view of the surrounding area.

The main attraction is the water sports, but the trails are challenging and worth exploring. You can spend a week and do something different every day including just sitting on the lodge deck and taking in the scenery.

    Guide to Laceys Spring

Monte Sano State Park sits 1,600 feet above sea level with temperatures averaging 5-8 degrees cooler than surrounding areas in summer. Located 27 miles from Laceys Spring, the park's elevated location creates distinct microclimates that affect camping conditions throughout the year. Winter overnight temperatures can drop significantly compared to Huntsville proper.

    What to do

Hike technical trails: Monte Sano State Park offers challenging terrain for experienced hikers. "These are not your easy day hike trails, though it is possible to take it easy. The problem being when you look at the map and read the names you can't help but go check out the trails! Good, technical hiking, bring your sticks and (once again) bug stuff," notes reviewer Shelly S.

Explore underground features: Cave systems near the campgrounds provide unique exploration opportunities. "We saw 4 waterfalls, including one inside a cave. A mountain bikers or hikers paradise here," shares Greg S. about his experience at Monte Sano State Park.

Visit Japanese gardens: Cultural attractions complement natural settings in the area. "The Japanese garden is very cool also. Wonderful overlooks to take in the surrounding area," comments Greg S. after exploring Monte Sano State Park's less-mentioned attractions.

    What campers like

Easy town access: Honeycomb Campground offers the perfect balance of seclusion and convenience. "A perfect secure campground for those camping alone or with your family. During season and with the uptick of camping with COVID it's hard to book a site but well worth it if you can plan ahead or camp during the week," explains Patti S.

Heated facilities: Winter camping comfort is enhanced at campgrounds with climate-controlled buildings. "The campground was very clean and had an excellent shower house and bathroom. It was heated, no extra cost for the shower and very clean," reports a visitor at regional glamping facilities.

Security measures: Sharon Johnston Park provides a safe environment for families. "There is a roving security guard most of the night. Great steady power and water," notes a camper who appreciated the extra safety measures.

    What you should know

Limited privacy at some sites: Point Mallard City Campground spaces require advance planning for better positioning. "This place is tight. Not in the Urban Dictionary meaning of tight, but in the actual meaning of tight. It's hard to tell if there are more trees or RVs on the property," explains Katie D.

Seasonal booking challenges: The Cove RV Resort offers convenience but requires advance planning. "We were looking for a spot to pull over for the night on the way back from a family vacation. This place is conveniently right off the interstate, but still tucked away enough that it's quiet," shares Meghan T.

Weather considerations: After storms, some campgrounds have lost their shade coverage. "A few years ago a tornado took out a lot of the big pines so it's a bit hot with very little shade. But it's still the best place to camp around Guntersville!" reports Greg H. about conditions near glamping options in Laceys Spring.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground facilities: Lake Guntersville State Park offers excellent recreation for children. "There are several types of sites, monthly, cabins and tent camping. There are boat slips (local rentals) and a Pavilion on the water, basketball and tennis courts, playground, shady dog park, splash pad, and clean bathhouses," says L&A C.

Water activities: Kids enjoy swimming areas at several campgrounds. "The kids did love the beach front entrance that was built for lake access and swimming. The camp store was well supplied. The staff was also great!" shares one family about their experience at waterfront glamping in Laceys Spring, Alabama.

Open play space: Bring outdoor games to maximize recreation options. "It's a great site to bring the kids. In the summer the pool is open which is great for the hot days. There's also a track, a baseball field, and soccer fields so I've seen many athletic events held there," reports M&P M. about family options.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: Choose locations carefully for convenience. "We were in site 19 which was in the way back, unfortunately near a 'pond' so a few mosquitoes were about. Otherwise pretty spacious sites. I hung my hammock and could have put up a tent," advises Shelly S. about TGL Adventures camping setup.

Hookup limitations: Plan water usage based on campground facilities. "Only downfall is no sewer hook up but they do have a honeypot service and 2 dump stations," reports Patti S. about regional camping near Laceys Spring luxury glamping options.

Road conditions: Prepare for various surfaces at different campgrounds. "Gravel roads and pads (thankfully, as everything around was standing in water from the recent downpour). The facility is dated, but clean and an easy on and off on the way through," shares Scotty W. about regional access conditions.
