Wind Creek State Park Campground offers seasonal variety for equestrian campers near Kent, Alabama. The park sits on Lake Martin, one of Alabama's largest reservoirs with 700 miles of shoreline and over 40,000 acres of water. Winter camping provides a quieter experience with significantly fewer visitors than summer months when waterfront activities dominate. The campground spans multiple loops with over 500 designated sites arranged across varying terrain.
What to do
Water recreation options: Wind Creek provides multiple water access points for campers with both motorized and non-motorized boat rentals available. "At the Creem Shop (they sell ice cream, burgers, etc) you can rent pedal boats and canoes. They have a zip line and tree line adventure course, mini-golf, a beach area for swimming, and plenty of fishing spots," notes Romeo M. at Wind Creek State Park Campground.
Seasonal activities: The park offers different experiences depending on when you visit. "This campground is a better place for the summer not much to do in the winter. It's a place for swimming, fishing, and boat riding. Nice bath houses and nice camp store," shares Ginger S. Winter visitors should plan indoor alternatives for recreation.
Trail exploration: Multiple trail options exist within the park property for hikers and equestrians. "They have playgrounds throughout the campground, trails from 1 mile long to 15 miles long that can be utilized by horse, bike, or on foot," explains Romeo M. Trail maps are available at the park office, with certain pathways designated for equestrian use.
What campers like
Waterfront sites: The most requested sites at Wind Creek face the lake directly. "We stayed at site 100 it was an excellent site right on the water next to us was like a private beach. This is the only public access to Lake Martin," reports Rachel G. at Wind Creek State Park Campground. Lake Martin provides substantial water recreation options.
Wildlife viewing: The park attracts various wildlife, especially waterfowl. "Being right on the lake and having the ducks swim up really thrilled our dogs. The bathrooms were very clean. I imagine that summer is a very different experience, but we enjoyed it!" shares Erin L. Bird watching opportunities increase during migration seasons.
Off-season tranquility: Visiting during non-peak times offers a completely different camping experience. "We were the only trailer in loop D. It was quiet and very enjoyable!" notes Erin L. Winter camping provides solitude not available during busy summer months.
What you should know
Reservation timing: Waterfront sites book quickly, especially during warm months. Matthew M. from Wind Creek State Park Campground spent significant time at the park and observed: "I spent 2 months there and loved everyday. We hated to leave." Reservations for summer weekends should be made 3-6 months in advance.
Site spacing considerations: The campground layout places sites relatively close together. "Spots are close together but I've seen worse. Campground is clean and wasn't noisy," reports Romeo M. Privacy between sites varies by loop, with some offering more separation than others.
Connectivity limitations: Internet access varies throughout the campground. "Only negative is that the wifi is not strong, but Verizon signal is great," notes Matthew K. Cell coverage depends on provider, with Verizon showing the strongest signal throughout the property.
