Three horse-friendly campgrounds serve the Haleyville area in northwestern Alabama. Owl Creek Horse Camp offers direct access to equestrian trails within Bankhead National Forest, featuring potable water available year-round and pit toilets. The campground consists of a large field surrounded by loblolly pines with some picnic tables available. The site provides excellent night sky viewing while maintaining cell service connectivity, which riders find valuable when coordinating trips. Daily use costs $3, while overnight camping is $5, with multiple water spigots accessible throughout the grounds.
The trail system connected to Owl Creek Horse Camp allows riders to link together 22 miles of paths primarily designed for equestrian use. Faye Whittemore Farms offers more amenities for horse owners, including paddocks for horses, electric and water hookups at wooded campsites, showers, and toilets. The farm maintains multiple riding trails through beautiful terrain that remains accessible throughout the year. For more primitive options, Sipsey Wilderness in Bankhead National Forest provides backcountry sites along Trail 200 that offer level terrain removed from water bodies to prevent flooding concerns. These sites typically require hikers to bring water filters for accessing river water, as the wilderness area features numerous intersecting creeks, streams, and waterfalls within its protected but unmaintained landscape.
