Valley View Campground — Fremont Peak State Park

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Wildlife sightings, stargazing through the Fremont Peak Observatory Association, and fog-watching from elevation give Valley View Campground a distinct character among California state park sites. Set within Fremont Peak State Park above San Juan Bautista, the campground sits high enough that valley fog rolls in below during evenings and mornings, while midday often brings open sightlines toward Moss Landing and the Salinas Valley. The drive up is part of the experience: the road is nominally two lanes but runs closer to one and a half in places, with limited sight distances that demand slower speeds than posted limits suggest.

Sites include level tent pads, picnic tables, fire pits, and potable water spigots distributed around the loop. Vault toilets are clean and well maintained, according to multiple recent visitors. Dogs are not allowed on the trails, though a service road leading up to the communication tower is walkable. One site sits directly adjacent to a trailhead. Quail, mice, and at least one possible bobcat have been spotted by recent campers.

Trailers and larger rigs should approach with caution. The paved driveways slope sharply at some sites, and campers have reported giving up on leveling after facing an eight-inch grade. RVs are limited to 25 feet, and even within that range, some sites may not work. Tent campers and those with small pop-ups will have the easiest time. Fog can make surfaces wet overnight, so bring dry bags or extra covers for gear left on picnic tables. Reservations are available at $25 per night, and weeknights tend to see lighter use, which can make for a quieter stay near the Oak Point Campground — Fremont Peak State Park end of the park. Those looking to compare options can also browse campgrounds around San Juan Bautista before booking.

Many campers appreciated the stunning valley views and excellent stargazing opportunities. A few reviews mentioned issues with RV leveling and narrow access roads, making it better suited for tent camping.

Pretty and quiet, but mostly not suitable for trailers or vans or RVs

Beware coming here with anything other than a tent!  All sites have a nice level tent pad area.

We camped two nights at Fremont Peak State Park with our pop-up tent trailer. We stayed in Valley View site #2 and were lucky that the paved driveway levelled out at the top (mostly).  Some people came to site #3 with a camper van and ended up leaving because they were at such a sharp angle.

It was not clear from reading other reviews or the park website, but this campground has plenty of potable water spigots around all the sites.  We found the vault toilets clean and well maintained.  Although dogs are not allowed on the trails, there is a service road up to the communication tower that you can hike part way on.
We observed the carpet of valley fog below us in the mornings and evenings, while mid-day you can see out to Moss Landing.  We also got to enjoy one of the Fremont Peak Observatory Association (https://fpoa.net/) programs which was amazing!  The views of the stars and the Milky Way are unbelievable and the volunteers were awesome.

Trailers iffy, definitely not all sites work for more than a tent!

There might be one or two sites that work for trailers but we gave up when trying to level 8 inches. Road up is nominally two lanes- (more like 1-1.5) combined with the limited sight distance it means you should drive slower than the speed limit.

If you are car camping or on a small RV this is a great place, once you make it up the last 11 miles!

Camping in the clouds

Pretty & windy drive. No visitor center but rangers drove by once. It very lightly rained but mostly the air was misty, & the fog got more dense as the night went on. The picnic table benches got wet so come prepared. By the morning the thick fog cleared, revealing a nice view.

Our site was right next to a trail but we were the only ones there that night so no issues. Didn’t get to try a trail this time. Picnic table, fire pit, & nearby water, trash can, & bathroom. Saw quails, a mouse, & a bobcat? Had a great time!
