Within Elephant Butte Lake State Park, South Monticello Campground sits on mesa edges overlooking the Rio Grande valley, accessed by a winding seven-mile road from Interstate 25. This state park facility operates year-round with full hookups at $30 per night, though the lake itself has receded significantly in recent years.
The campground spreads across several loops with sites spaced well apart from neighbors. Each site includes water and electric hookups, a picnic table with sunshade, and fire ring on level gravel pads. The absence of trees means no privacy screening, but Shari G. notes "the sites are nicely spaced apart so you don't feel like you are on top of your neighbors." Campers consistently report quiet nights, with wildlife sightings including rabbits, quail, and seasonal sandhill crane flocks.
A 12-mile trail system begins at the campground, winding between park roads and amenities along the western lake shore. The graveled path works well for hiking and biking, though reviews mention sandy washouts in spots after storms. With the lake at low levels, the boat ramp sits out of water, but the Rio Grande still flows through the valley below. Swimming remains possible when water levels permit.
Heated restrooms with free showers serve the campground, plus a dump station operates near the exit. Cell coverage reaches most sites, particularly with major carriers. The town of Elephant Butte provides basic supplies nine miles away, while Truth or Consequences offers full services including grocery stores and restaurants another six miles south. For more camping options in the region, consider campgrounds near Truth or Consequences.
Reservations help secure preferred sites during peak seasons, though occupancy often stays below half capacity even on summer weekends.
