Yellowstone National Park is the home of almost 3,500 square miles of nationally protected lands. From rushing waterfalls, roaring rivers, soaring peaks, and marvels of geology such as Old Faithful, the park has sights not even imagination even conjure. For this reason, hundreds of thousands visit every year. Plan ahead and experience once-in-a-lifetime camping in Wyoming in the process. 


Although abundant, camping in Wyoming is extremely sought after, especially near the park. Twelve campgrounds within Yellowstone National Park provide adventurers with plentiful options, but planning ahead is vital. The Canyon Campground allows easy access to the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, a picture-perfect waterfall and river vista in the north-central region. Visit Artist’s Point and hike the 300 feet down to the lower falls to feel the rush of the Yellowstone River. 


For a more touristy experience, snag a site in the Madison Campground. Being one of the largest in the park and less than 20 miles from the famous geyser Old Faithful, this area is a go-to for first time visitors. Sitting at an elevation just below 7,000 feet, the crisp mountain air will refresh. This area gets a lot of traffic, so pack in your patience and remember that the parks are for everyone to enjoy. 


Camping in Wyoming also gives the chance to get off the grid. Grand Teton National Park is directly to the south of Yellowstone and allows for some easy-access backpacking. When done right, you can avoid the droves of humanity that flock to the Greater Yellowstone region. 


For an easy trek into the backcountry, get a scenic spot along Leigh Lake or String Lake. These camping sites are often booked months in advance, so get them quick! A hidden gem tucked in the shadow of Mount Moran is Bearpaw Lake and is also relatively accessible from the same trail. Remember your bear spray and enjoy some genuine Wyoming camping!

The Best Camping Near Wyocolo, Wyoming

This tiny but mighty cabin, w/breakfast & coffee included, sits up on Jelm Mountain at 7600 ft with a view overlooking the Laramie River. This cozy spot is equipped with a queen bed, Outhouse, (with access to a full, not shared, bathroom) propane gas grill, picnic table, fire pit, hot tub/Sun room, and gazebo. .

Little Cabin with a View sits right on the edge of Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest and is close to the Wyoming Colorado Border. This makes it an amazing hiking destination and great for snowshoeing and nordic skiing in the winter. Depending on the time of year a trip up Jelm Mountain offers some beautiful views. The lack of light pollution make for great star gazing or full moon watching from the gazebo, hot tub or the Little Cabin front porch.

There is electricity, electric heat, microwave & mine fridge. The Wi-Fi is accessible in the sunroom/hot tub area, located about 180 ft from the Little Cabin, but does not extend to the Little Cabin. Downlading is slow but checking messages, social media & wi-fi calling works fine. Download anything you want to watch or listen to prior to arrival.

Fur Babies are welcome. They love the room to run.

Fire Pit use is dependent on winds and the weather and how dry the surrounding area is.



Little Cabin With a View

BLM North Sand Hills Campground

The campground is at the eastern edge of the Platte River Wilderness, and has 16 sites. It is a single loop with one side running parallel to Pelton Creek among Lodgepole pines. Some sites overlook the creek and a meadow. The understory is grass and the sites are fairly close together providing minimal privacy. A trailhead provides wilderness access via the Douglas Creek Trail or the Platte Ridge Trail. 14 day stay limit. Stock unloading facility near campground, however no stock are allowed in the campground. Picnic tables, toilets, drinking water, fire grates and no refuse receptacles (pack out your own trash, leave no trace). Fishing is available in Douglas Creek. This area is located in the Snowy Range and is managed by the Laramie Ranger District.

Pelton Creek

Sentinel Mountain RV & Quick Stop

Six Mile Gap Campground is 2 miles off Highway 230 and provides access to the North Platte River and Platte River Wilderness Area. The campground has six tent sites and three pull-thru sites. Facilities include picnic tables, bear canisters for food storage, drinking water, toilets, fire grates, and trash service. Stay limit is 14 days. A separate parking area is available for hikers and river floaters. Popular activities nearby include fishing, floating the North Platte River and hiking the Platte River Trail. The North Platte River is classified as a blue-ribbon trout stream by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD). Fish species present include brook, brown and rainbow trout. Douglas Creek also offers good fishing opportunities. Special fishing regulations apply to the North Platte River upstream of Saratoga, Wyoming. All watercraft (except for inflatables 10’ or less in length) must have a valid Wyoming Aquatic Invasive Species decal. Decals are available from the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) online, at regional offices and at automated license vendors. For additional information on boating and fishing regulations, contact the Wyoming Game and Fish Department in Laramie or Cheyenne. 

Six Mile Campground

The campground is adjacent to Lake Owen. It is comprised of two loops under a dense stand of Lodgepole pines and a few Aspen. Both loops have sites overlooking the lake and site with scenic views of the Snowy Range. There are 35 campsites with tables, fire rings, trash pick-up, vault toilets. The understory is grass, but sites are well separated providing adequate privacy. There is a 14 day stay limit. Owen Lake is 55 acres and offers fishing and boating access. It is managed by the Laramie Ranger District.

Dispersed Camping in Routt National Forest 

The North Sand Hills Campground was installed in 2011 to accommodate large RVs. The campground has two vault toilets and 13 individual pull-through sites, each with a picnic table, fire ring, and tent pad. In addition to the developed campground, numerous dispersed camping sites exist within the North Sand Hills OHV area. Always use existing sites. Sage Campground

## Overview

The popular Big Creek Lakes Campground offers a peaceful, scenic setting in the heart of the Rocky Mountains of northern Colorado. The campground is located in Routt National Forest at an elevation of 9,000-ft., and is adjacent to Big Creek Lake, where fishing, boating and hiking are available.

## Recreation

This campground offers boating and fishing on Colorado's second largest natural lake, hiking in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness and ATV trails nearby. There are also ample opportunities for viewing wildlife, including moose.   
  
Fishing for trout, muskie, grayling and Kokanee salmon is available in the lake. Anglers also have access to a creek. Non-motorized boats are allowed on the upper section of the lake and motorized boats are permitted on the lower section.

## Facilities

This facility has a campground and day use area. There are 24 reservable campsites and 30 first-come, first-served campsites, all of which are near Big Creek Lake.  
  
Two boat ramps are provided for the convenience of boaters and anglers. A campground host is on-site for visitor assistance.

## Natural Features

Big Creek lies among Lodgepole pine and fir trees. Some previously forested areas of the campground have been thinned due to pests and now provide more sun. The campground offers beautiful views of the surrounding wilderness.   
  
The wetlands around the lake are prime moose territory. Black bear, bobcat, coyote, elk, mule deer and moose are just some of the many animals that inhabit these rich and diverse lands.   
  
The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland, encompass nearly 3 million acres from central and northeastern Wyoming to north-central Colorado.

The closest town is Walden, Colorado, about 35 miles from the campsite. Many more outdoor recreation opportunities exist in the surrounding national forests and grasslands, including hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, OHV riding, fishing, hunting, sightseeing and winter sports.
